Introducing the next Narrow Planet locomotive, and another in the East European forestry industry category...

NPL005 - Hungarian forestry diesel

As part of the 2014 Dave Brewer Challenge, to build a 'critter', I was searching around for something that may fit the criteria - when flicking through the Paul Englebert book on Hungarian Forestry Railways I found that one line had rebuilt a pair of LKM NS3 diesel with design cues taken from the cab of a C050 to produce something totally unique and functional that met the operating requirements of the Szilvásvárad forest railway. The completed model was awarded a 'commended' prize at ExpoNG,

Narrow Planet are now offering you the chance to own one of these unique and curious looking locomotives!

Body kit with detailing parts - £50 including UK delivery (excluding chassis)

The chassis is available seperately (currently) through the 009 Society.

Pre-production kit, produced for the Dave Brewer challenge by me - finished with a few additional details (oil can, bonnet side headlights, chain wrapped around buffer) not included in the kit.

The Prototype

The NS3 was a 60hp locomotive and at 11 tons was over 3 tons heavier than the 50hp C050 - which probably explains why it was more successful than the more traditional Hungarian forestry diesel - more tractive effort. The Hungarians even rebuilt them with an 80hp engine later in their lives. There are detail difference between the pair, as you'd expect with a home built machine, and although they cab has the appearance of a C050, it appears that it is also completely homebuilt. That probably explains the somewhat utilitarian appearance of the locomotive!

The Paul Englebert book has a scale drawing and when reduced to 4mm (as I model in 009 no matter what gauge the prototype was) this fitted the wheelbase of the Minitrains outside frames F&C locomotive perfectly! A plan was hatched... a custom 3D printed body on a RTR chassis with custom drawn etched brass details and finished with some scratchbuilt details to represent a rebuilt NS3.

The Model

Utilising the fantastic running Minitrains F&C chassis, the model comprises of a 3D printed body, 3D printed chassis, 3D printed couplings and a set of parts etched in nickel silver. The chassis replaces the original Minitrains outside frames and dispenses with the cylinder. The connecting rods are simply removed and the retaining pin snipped with a sharp cutter and refitted to the flycrank. To finish the locomotive you'll need 0.4 and 0.9mm brass rod, glazing, liquid gravity (or fluid lead) - and then to paint and weather to your choice.
