RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted August 25, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 25, 2020 There's a spurious 't' on the top tube. Startship.... 1

Ignore the typo, it's a very useful cold dark grey. Think Humbrol 67 Tank Grey, but very workable and malleable. 3

I have been meaning to ask for some time, and you've now reminded me to do it. How did you achieve the mineral wagon's rusty patches that have started to spread downwards? I've had a go at some but they don't look as good as yours, and I'm jealous!
RMweb Gold Popular Post NHY 581 Posted August 26, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) Mick, thank you. The weathering powders are applied over patches of Humbrol Track colour 173. The initial powder applied is iron oxide. Quite bright. I then tone things down with Smoke powder. Added in are dabs of rust and dark earth, topped off with shading added with white and black. I then seal the plot with varnish. Now this may well be the key part. I then remove varnish/powders using a fibre brush working downwards to produce runs and streaks. A light touch is required. Rob. Splendid! Thank you for the explanation. I favour (amongst others) dark earth and dark umber for rusty weathering tones, but your use of white and black as "additives" is interesting. I must delve into some boxes . . . . . . . . .
RMweb Premium PMP Posted August 31, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 31, 2020 Apologies for dropping some foreign muck in the thread Rob, this is weathered using MiG pigments. The easiest way to describe them is paint without the liquid, and I’ve never experienced or heard of any colours in any ‘lumps’ of pigment. AK is another brand worth investigating too, the mediums work in a similar manner. Use sparingly, a little goes a long way!. 4
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted September 1, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 1, 2020 Oh ye of little faith! MIG pigment This one is "old rust" as tipped out of the bottle onto one of my weathering "sheets" - note the lumps then added to an Iron mink..still lumpy then press with finger end (in rubber glove)Its another way of doing rusty streaks/runs. Sorry for distracting your thread Rob.. Baz 1

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted October 12, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 12, 2020 (edited) Evening all. For completeness, here are a few images of the latest victim of the weathering sheep. sb67
Very nice pic's and weathering Rob. I didn't realise how big a Pannier was against a Peckett!
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted October 12, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 12, 2020 Thanks Steve. Yes, they are quite large. A bit too large to be honest for parts of Sheep Dip which was built with Pecketts in mind. In fact anything larger than an 0.4.0 Peckett is a bit of a squeeze. Rob. 2

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted December 5, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2020 Morning all. I have been dabbling a little with 7mm. Very much a long term project as I have still much that I want to do in 4mm . The first victim in big scale is a Minerva ex-GWR open. Here is a cruel close up. I must sort out the three links. Very scruffy. Rob. 6
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted December 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2020 Superb! Is that really a 7mm wagon or a photo of a full size one?
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted December 5, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2020 (edited) Thanks Chris. My posts on this thread are extremely occasional. Too many threads.........the next 7mm wagon will be the Minerva modified Iron Mink but that might well be a long way off. Lots of 4mm ideas to sort out first........... But. A few more images of the 7mm open.. Rob. Edited February 11, 2023 by NHY 581 2
