I didn't know 'till a few months ago when looking thro' the RCTS book on the 9F's, page 206, chapter 10, 'Names, and Nicknames'. It transpires that the WR was rumoured to be considering naming it's first 7 9F's - using the names that were going to be applied to the 47xx class, originally broad gauge names, but were turned down because it was a break with the GW tradition of only naming ( express ??) passenger locos, the 47xx being 2-8-0 mixed traffic locos means they didn't come into the right category. Names to be used, were to come from, included;- Behemoth, Bellerophon, Champion, Dreadnought, Gladiator,Hercules, Mammoth, Plutarch, Romulus, Tantalus, Thunderer, Trafalgar.

I hope not, they never actually carried names in service, so myself would like the replica to be as authentic as possible.

Keith.

I agree, but if someone comes along with a cheque for about 20 or 30 grand to help the new-build, and says they want a name - then what ? But 'Hercules' can't be used, as 4277 has got that ( along with 5239 'Goliath'). :sungum:

That's a tough one for the trustees to balance competing interests however I would hope they can find a compromise that allows a substantial donation to be made whilst satisfying others, probably also donors in aggregate more than the sum pledged, such as a name plate is only worn at certain times.

Personally, I'm more relaxed about naming new builds that never existed than naming locos that didn't carry names in service. For a prominent new build, particularly one that will have mainline operation aspirations, I'd have thought a strong name is part of the brand. I did like the way the GWS organised the poll for 2999.

It would certainly be interesting if, say, Everest Double Glazing, or Nike, or the Post Office were to pour some money into the project and insist on naming rights.....

Ordered! and cheaper than discussed a while back on here.

So the £220 I stashed with Mr ERNIE will now also cover the 4 Collett coaches due from Margate this year.

Note that 4780 is now described as Class 47xx 2-8-0 4704 in GWR green with garter crest.

A much better choice of livery, in my opinion.

But is that correct? I thought that only 4700 wore the Garter Crest for the Stockton and Darlington centenary in 1925. When new, it and the other members of the class had plain "Great Western" on the tender as shown below.

I am pretty sure this lasted until the introduction of the Shirtbutton monogram. If anyone has information to the contrary I am willing to be corrected.

4700 definitely had the garter crest at the Stockton & Darlington centenary parade and it is clearly visible in a  film of the event in the John Huntley archive.  But of course it also had the original (small) tender so are Heljan doing two types of tender or are they simply still making up their minds?

All these wonderful GWR liveries and limited funds... I certainly feel as if my glory is a vice grip at the moment...!!

I wouldn't let go of my wallet just yet.At least not until Heljan prove themselves capable of producing one that runs reliably. Look on the current O2 thread to see what I mean.

Edit: I see you already have.

Thanks Karhedron

I cannot find any clear image that has a 47xx with Garter Crest save for 4700 in 1925 with full lining as already noted.

The image included above is of 4700 with its original 1919 No1 Boiler; prior to the No7 Boiler being available in 1921 for 4700 and 1922 for the rest of the class as built.  You can easily tell by the absence of outside steam pipes, and the height of the chimney.  The larger boiler gave them a much more formidable appearance.

Also note stationmasters point that the class were fitted with 4000 gallon tenders from 1929.
