Re-use of old railway buildings

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Here are a couple of interesting re-uses of old railway buildings/structures:

An intriguing dwelling at Settle, converted from the old water tower: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4254332

The former level-crossing gatehouse at Lincoln St Marks station is now a fish and chip shop! http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2800509

Any others??

Thanks,

Bill

This, much-extended, building was one of several wagon-works that survived into the 1960s in my home-town, Llanelli . It was adapted into industrial premises (initially Weslec) during the late 1960s, and for years retained the original stone buildings, now hidden by modern additions:-

The aerial view (  https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Sandy+Rd,+Llanelli,+Carmarthenshire+SA15/@51.6835577,-4.1729679,301m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x486eec2d32c354bf:0x2fe8f4d3476e3f9?hl=en) shows the works, which was served from the Sandy branch of the Burry Port and Gwendreath Valley railway. The dark line to the right is the track-bed of the former Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway; parallel to this, to its left, was the Nevill's Dock and Railway (never absorbed by the GWR, nor Nationalised), built on the route of the Carmarthenshire Tramroad. The green area was the site of Sandy Junction Yard; still busy enough in the 1960s to have its own pilot. As a very small child, I would be walked/ pushed to the overbridge to watch the trains; for me, the really fascinating thing was the wagon works, with its traverser and the tractor pushing the wagons...

I am lucky enough to have been given a guided tour of the Settle WaterTower. It has been converted into a really plush home and amazingly meets modern building regulation requirements. Mark Rand, the owner went to great lengths to preserve the structure as much as possible. He had also had an old Settle and Carlisle Navvy hut from Appleby converted into a garage.

The goods shed at Bourne End is an auction house these days, and there's always the Signal Box cafe at Totnes. George Clarkes Amazing Spaces on channel 4 featured an old wooden signal cabin this week.

My own dream is for a signal box with the downstairs as a small brew plant and the upstairs as a little micro pub.

Sigh, back to work tomorrow.

The Scotsman comment is a little 'ambitious' however the building and other associated buildings used by Network Rail, survives.

The GN Goods Shed is there too. It is partly a Gym and retains the old internal crane.

A much older building in 36E http://www.oldstationhousebandb-retford.co.uk/is the remains of the old Thrumpton GC Station.

Several old Crossing Keeper's cottages locally, are private dwellings and have been for a long time.

I think the Main Halls at the NRM are probably the biggest reuses? Or maybe Manchester Central is?

Of course being from Derby we have to mention the Roundhouse - originally part of Derby Works and then fully renovated with the help of Heritage Lottery funding and incorporated into Derby College. Most of the rest of the building has been converted into teaching areas and a library but the Roundhouse is now an exhibition space used for all sorts of events.

Have a look here and view the 360' video - then imagine being there in May for the Derby Exhibition - we will fill all of that (and more) for our first Roundhouse Show after previously organising shows at Moorways and the Assembly Rooms - both venues now unavailable.

The Roundhouse in Camden, North London, ( http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/about-us/history-of-the-roundhouse/), where, I believe, Hawkwind's legendary "Silver Machine" was recorded!

...and Status Quo did their recent 'Aquostic' gig.......not everyone's cup of Quo, but I enjoyed most of it.

P.S. I think there is a book based around the contents of  this thread, or have I missed an existing one?

Pocklington Goods shed is a community hall of some sort. I once saw students sitting an exam in it....poor souls.

Lincoln Loco Shed(Midland?) is a Student Union building.

P

Lincoln GN shed, or could be GC(?) is incorporated into the university buildings as above. The former DMU shed at the other end of the station is now home to Stagecoach buses.

Wide range of re-uses, really, some interesting ones already mentioned on here. Consider Bath Green Park - now part of a Sainsburys and a public space. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the old station building at Hele & Bradninch, which a local community group are renting and hoping to convert to a local museum.

I would take the £20,000 and offer to dismantle the hut then rebuild it somewhere else. There seems to be quite a bit of land attached to the building and this seems to be the attraction to the developers.

We did our first 'away' show with Deepcar here,

in 1991 :O

Very Nice.

I remember now that Tavistock SR Station is a smart B & B.

There are lovely private homes in former stations all over the country.

One of my favourites is Baynards, on the old Horsham, Christs Hospital,  Guildford line (near Horsham in fact).

A few old stations and crossing cottages are now dwellings, but the former tramway (closed 1947) weighbridge in my village now hosts the bottle bank!
