Re-use of old railway buildings

The route of the C&WR railway through Workington Central Station now exists as a road appropriately called "Central Way", however former bridges over the line still exist (now used by road traffic)

Oxford Street bridge:

and

Brow Top/Ladies Walk:

Whether the Finkle Street Bridge still exists under all the concrete extensions is anybody's guess!

Although part way in it looks like this, which could be old railway works:

The above two crossings have been amalgamated into a rather dingy tunnel!

The Station area and yards are now car parking appropriately named.

  • 1 year later...

Has anyone mentioned the Musee d'Orsay in Paris? One of the better reuses I can think of.

Denver Union Station is quite an impressive retail facility these days.

I stayed in the Wolverhampton Low Level premier inn a couple of years back. Not a remarkable hotel, but better than demolishing it.

The railway still runs through on the low level and IIRC there is some station memorabilia/photographs in the Musee itself.

The complex of railway buildings in Somers Town/north of Kings Cross is amazing - and so nearly lost after decades of neglect.

Now Central St Martns - London University of the Arts - https://www.kingscross.co.uk/granary

Cubitts Granary building, Midland Railway goods depot from before the MR London extension built, now a Waitrose! Great buildings', covered coal depot. Walk round and marvel.

You'd never have known these buildings were there until the area was regenerated.

"Yr Hen Orsaf" = The Old Station

Another railway station building that is now a pub is Lytham. This is now the Station Tavern where Michael Portillo called for lunch last week whilst filming the latest series of Great British Railway Journeys.
