Dettingen GCR might have been layout

Thanks, that’s what I had thought. It is nice to know another thinks the same and unless someone has a great set of works drawings it will have to be a best guess. How many might know more than either of us? Perhaps a handful .

frustrating sometimes that there is not as much information as some railways, like the midland or great western. But then that was the reason Denny switched to modeling the GCR.

And the reason it has been quiet.

The boys had a big shock when they came home and saw this. Then they really knew the move was real.

normal service will resume in a couple of months.

until then side projects which can be done on the lap, and light and easy to transport will be attended to.

 few pages back you were working on the GCR petrol-electric railcar and in one of the phortos you pictured a drawing of said railcar. Will you let me know what the reference is please.

I do have the drawing with me. The rail car is a project I have brought to finish with me on the journey.  The book it is from is packed for the move but I think it was Dow vol 3 though I could be wrong.

You are more than welcome to come......you could be in the re erection team if you are early enough. Deal with all the gremlins from being in a container for 6 weeks. Though. I am in discussion with the management over a larger shed or extended garage or both...........it is that or a house move again, which she is talking about before we have even moved in to this one!

Seats made and fitted.

They were of the swing wing type so you could chose to sit facing forward or back. 

Now to paint them and the floor.

The floor a wood colour too?

Then wire up the two bogies and it is almost done.

The Barnum coaches were becoming a pain to cut out. Having to catch the cut lines in the light. Then hit upon the bright idea of giving the surface a wash.

Eh voila . The lines which need cutting and scoring deeper become clearer. Also the ones missed by the laser cutter are also shown. 

Of course none of this would be necessary if I could work out how the do a scribe layer followed by a cut layer . It seems it is all or nothing . Must get better at this if going to use the method again.

It has arrived!

Then the moment of truth, how much was smashed on the journey over? 

Going out several buildings to significant hits. However this time just a few bushes and the milk cart came off and only one piece separated from the milk cart.

once the house is set up it will be time to set it up and check if it still works. I have spotted a couple of bits of stock took a hit and so will go into the repair shops.

Not only is it back home, it has been reunited with the original dettingen my father made and ran by me as a kid in early 80s . 

There is a bit of me that wants to set it up and get it running, now where would swmbo let me do that.....?

also noticed my class 31 appears to have succumbed to mazak rot or a bash on the journey home. Top might be repairable but if it is the former I will need to hunt down a spare chassis. Shame as I rather like 31s and it fit with late midland control of gcml in 60s.

Simple Solution? 

Buy a Class 37 or 47, far more common on the GCR than 31s, especially the "Toffee Apples"  (D5500-19) these were Stratford locos and mainly worked over the GER lines or cross London freights.

 

I tried to stop the expansion by cutting the thin pieces of metal joining the cabs and the main chassis.

Thanks for the solution. As for buying a 47 and 37, I am way ahead of you there. 31 did appear so only a smidge of rule 1 needs apply.

A bit of reconstruction surgery. Not that these were built before the move, but they were fragile and shaken around in the box. 

They will make the ends of the seats in the Barnum. Plus a door or two which need the surround restoring.

in the process of separating parts I found ones which look like 4mm gcr bridge number signs and also a bunch of little round pieces which might be useful as large rivets on a future project.

The seats, as best as I could resurrect them from the shattered pieces. Was it worth it? Maybe, maybe not. Unsure how visible it will be once in the coach, I might just paint on the rest of the relief.

I have another set i did I did by etching rather than cutting it out, let’s see if that set comes out any better.

might I redo them? Possibly but I do not have access to a cutter until the new job starts in September. Slightly jealous of those who have access at home to these technologies. 

Will have to reappraise then.

I'm not sure I'm seeing the faults in the seat ends in those pictures. What's visible to me appears to be at least comparable with the tediously hand-cut ends that I produced for my own Barnum seats some years ago. Will any faults show once they are finished in (I imagine) a dark brownish tone and are tucked away inside the carriage? The  are not large parts are they?

Thank you for your kind words. You are right they are not likely to be too noticeable but once you get drawn into the little parts you focus in on them as you build sub asemblies and their imperfections become starkly obvious. 

One needs to take a step back sometimes to see the big picture sometimes. I think it is because I have been cutting out little pieces to build these four coaches for several weeks now in Ernest that I have been caught up by them.

less than 50 pieces, (I think), left to cut out and then i can start on the build process, which should be more exciting/ satisfying. 

Must make for better photos for people to look at.

A week to do the top layer.

One seat set completed. Three more to go. At this rate it is 6 weeks work to do that.

2 months for a set of coach seats, plasticard a couple of pounds. 

That is either too slow modeling or very good value for money. These 4 coaches might take a year to build. Some turn out a coach in a week.
