Dettingen GCR might have been layout

I was imagining using pcb strip and hope the “thick” non metal base would soak up the heat before hitting the plastic. If the solder was to be the solution.

Richard

If  your plan is to glue the PCB to the body then solder the couplings to the PCB, there shouldn't be a problem as there will be next to no heat conduction through the substrate of the PCB.  As gr.king suggested, tin the PCB and the wire before fitting and the soldering will be much easier.

PS alternatively you could solder the couplings to the PCB and then glue them in place.

What a difference a day makes.

All four are done but four near identical photos would not be interesting.

First coat on. I am going to look in natural light to see if I can weather on it to get the variation of colour in the side panels.

Question: what colour were the solebars(?) in GCR days? brown like on lner coaches or black as in br days. Does anyone know?

many thanks

I decided that gcr photos suggest the solebars were black.

Four have advanced to main base colours on. Door handles on.

Rooves started white but became dirty quickly with use. Do I paint in white and wait to spray weathering later or go for grubby gray from the start?

Simplicity of colour,(which is unusual in pregrouping ) , means that seats need painting green, buffers oil stained steel. Touch up where paint has strayed and they will be nearly done.

Brass jobs, handrails, letters and numbers.

Just need dart castings to release the bogies at correct length and they should be ready to go,

Made a start on the handrails. It has taken an hour to get this far.

so with 30 left to go that is 15 hours of modeling to fit them all.

These are complicated to bend up but were so noticeable on the carriages.

And no before you ask. I will not bend up the even fancier version.

So that must be 15 hours. There are 108 parts in the handrails alone. Plus 160 holes which needed drilling.

I would like like to say I got faster but I didn’t .

Next touch up painting. Correcting the colour of the corridor connection ends.

Then numbers and letters, interior, glazing and bogies.........come on dart castings, turn them from coming soon to “on sale”

How about a jig? I'm guessing that pins stuck in a board should do it.

Thought about it, but several reverse curves and bend in 2 different planes needed. All done now and it took a while but was not difficult to do ..... after some practice.

The alternative scrolled handrails are even more "interesting" to make up individually from wire.

I thought about them and then dismissed them for the same reason. So that is 700 and 712 I cannot model for sure. Not sure which others but suggests the higher number batch.

The bellows made up. This is a proof of concept after a discussion with Graeme at Warley.

Not it so bad and I only need another 5.

Cheap modeling. Card is an off cut from the art department, thread from the sewing box, plasticard 1.50 a sheet and it will make probably 100 end pieces. More than enough for my entire proposed fleet of gangwayed stock for the layout.

A small break from Barnums.

A friend, last night, said he could not make sense of this kit. This morning I got it out to see what I could do.

Here it is by breakfast.

The crane might take a little longer. I did look to see if the web had any built as a guide. It seems to be that none have been built AND photographed so flying slightly blind here. Also do not have crane book 3 which apparently has the hand cranes in it.

If I could get somebody else to do things for me, every time, just because I said "I can't make sense of this", I could have such an easy and happy life.

But maybe, less satisfying?

In fairness to him, he brought it in for ideas, it intrigued me as I could not work it out straight away how it might work which drew me in as I get hooked by a challenge. Might be why I picked gcr pregrouping rather than early 60s to model where there is much more r-t-r .

Concertina ends fitted.

People, seats and tables visible inside.

Glazing and frosted windows to do next.

Then rooves.

Come on dart castings, I am running out of jobs to do on them. Bogies priced up and “coming soon” needs to be changed to “ add to basket”

The first of the glazing in. And rooves painted.

whoever thought these were standard coaches so only a couple of size windows is clearly mistaken.

24 of these windows with glazing bars to fit. Bars done by scoring the back of the glass and filling with black paint and wiping off the excess. I have end windows, door windows,(two types),loo windows and saloon windows to go.

Just shy shy of two hours to fit the four gcr sets of letters and the number centrally both sides so by that calculation I have another six hours of fitting little brass letters and numbers to go.
