Kirkby Summit was then in operation from the time of the new deviation, but with only the metal box traffic to deal with after the cessation of pilot locos, it spent most of its latter time switched out until affectively closed never to re-open. it was then knocked down and the site used for the erection of a new NX Panel box from the restored RHL services. No I am talking about when the GNR line from Annesley to Shirebrook was opened c1900. There was a curve, traces of which still exist today, north to west joining the GCCR just east of Kirkby Bentinck station
Fat Controller
Magpie Grove, on the Llanelly and Mynydd Mawr, was opened around 1960, to deal with anticipated traffic from the newly-sunk Cynheidre colliery. Once it was commissioned, it was locked out, and remained so until closure in 1966. As part of the same capacity increase, the 'box at Sandygate Junction was also upgraded; that saw a few more train movements, but still only lasted from 1962 to 1968. Rivercider
Not the shortest operational perhaps, but maybe among the longest closed boxes is the former Bristol and Exeter box at Weston-super-Mare. Opened in 1866 when the second Weston station opened, it closed in 1884 when the current (third) station came into use, Bristol and Exeter Railway signal box Weston-super-Mare, 1866-1884. 16/10/2011 cheers Edited February 23, 2020 by Rivercider Corrected date
SM42
The "new" Selly Oak box didn't last too long before Saltley PSB took over. Built around 1957 and resignalled around 1969 I believe. Andy
mikeh
Another contender - Coventry No.3 - old box taken out of use and new wooden Type 15 bought into use 24th September 1961 as site needed for track re-alignment due to Coventry station rebuilding and resignalling. Closed 14th April 1962 when Coventry PSB opened. Mike
