Just a bit of fun

 

At the Ulster Railway Modellers Exhibition August past, I picked up two battered ‘Thomas’ coaches ‘Annie & Clarabel’ as others had suggested using them to make  6 wheel coaches.

A bit of research in Desmond Coakham’s book on the BCDR showed BCDR 1st Class No. 130 was a possibility.

It worked out well in that I was able to retain all the wheels on one coach which meant that the middle wheel was in the center position.

I added the interior partitions and some passengers and all that was left was to paint and add the decals.

The B101s took over the workings of the Rosslare Express from the Woolwich Moguls. The Express was a limited stop-service which ran non-stop between Rosslare Strand and Waterford and the larger stations between Waterford & Mallow.

 

Interestingly the snatchers on B107 are set up reverse to normal practice, the snatcher-man would have had to travel in the trailing cab separate from the driver, I wonder did the B101 class close cousins the Scottish Region BRCW type 2 Sulzers used in the Highlands have the same snatcher set up?

Nice job Kirley; I built one many years ago although the Ratio bogies gave up eventually and I had to replace them with Bachmann LMS bogies.

 

Can I ask about those L shaped blocks you have used in the first photo? They look like they could be a very useful replacement for that

"three hands needed" stage of joining sides and ends.

Thanks Glover. I would agree the bogies do not look very robust.   The blocks have magnets in each side holding the two pieces in right angles as the glue sets.  I don't have a makers name for them unfortunately, I'll try and search for the internet transaction to get the details.

Gathered up some bus kits (Jim Poots) so I built them together along with a presentation of a PS2 converted from an English bus.

Buses

Gathered up some bus kits (Jim Poots) so I built them together along with a presentation of a PS2 converted from an English bus.

 

A bit of useless trivia about the PS2. There was only one PS2 with a front entrance, which was C8858 MZ1929. I knew this bus well during my schooldays, as it was used on Derry/Londonderry city services, normally on route C. Up until 1964 it had the normal rear entrance, but as an experiment for one man operation, it was lengthened and fitted with a front door. The experiment was not a success, due to problems with the PSV authorities. Unlike other PS2s MZ1929 never sported a rear route number display, certainly the only one in the Derry/Londonderry fleet. This bus was the only PS2 to receive the new Ulsterbus blue and ivory livery, and was used as the spare bus for the city fleet until withdrawal and preservation.

Dutch Van GSVs

 

I got a Dutch Van kit from Silver Fox intending to run with the RPSI train but the wait for decals from Railtec is so long I decided to do it in IR livery.

 

A very easy build, just clean up the resin body, mask and paint.

I could not resist adding to the interior, so partitions and two boilers were added.  They are 2 pieces of condute with plasticard tops and sprayed chrome, possibly a bit on the big side.

The coupling hooks supplied were enormous so I had to replaced them.

Silver Fox provided the decals and I added the white stripes using 'Foxes' lines.

Really nice job Kieran. As you say 'clean up the resin body' makes a lot of difference.  Some folk don't spend the time preparing the resin before construction and painting.  Like the interior and little details like the tail lamps.  I like Silver Fox models in kit and RTR form.  They do what they say on the tin admirably, especially at a reasonable price point. John H is very accommodating.  I'll need a green RPSI one soon.  Looks like SSM transfers are available.  RailTec are out of stock.

NIR MkIIb Dining Coach No.547

 

I built this about 8 years using MIR kit which was brass sides stuck to a Lima Mk II.  A few months back I noticed the brass was coming away from the plastic body and I tried to stick it back without damaging the decals.  I got there but was not happy with the fix so into the brake fluid and some scraping and cleaning.

Eventually got it back to the brass again.

Once cleaned up it was time to stick the sides back on.

It turns out that there was another UTA half cab bus that had an experimental front door fitted. This one was a PS1, A7845 GZ6073 converted in 1953, but lack of co-operation from the unions put paid to OMO as they insisted a conductor had to be part of the crew. Apart from fitting the front door, and panelling over the rear door, unlike MZ1929, the body was otherwise unaltered. There is a picture in 'Buses in Ulster Vol 2. The Ulster Transport Authority 1948-1967'.

CIE Side Door Containers.

 

At the Dublin Show I picked up some Container and Wagon kits from Leslie McAllister (Provincial Wagons).

 

I usually build items in the order I buy them but this time I broke my own rule and decided to build the containers only, after all they are a quick build, 4 sides and a roof. 

 

I have to tell you I struggled with them having to fettle away quite a bit of the resin to get the sides not to protrude beyond the roof.

The decals went on easily considering the ribbed nature of the sides but I used Micro Set/Sol to soften the transfers which helped.

 

However when I set them on flats on the layout I though they looked too bright.

I tried to tone them down a bit, maybe this is what they were like when new as all the photographs I have seen of them they were near the end of their days.

Nice build.  Colour looks pretty good to me Kieran.  Leslie's sample colour in his publicity shot was indeed too bright, but your's looks spot on.  They are pretty impressive for resin which obviously restricts them from C-Rail levels of finish and detail.

 

Yours look much better all round.

One of the things I dislike about resin is the amount of fettling and preparation needed. Loads of flash on small parts that are a pain and time consuming to remove.  Not a criticism of Leslie's kits, rather resin as a medium in general, but when there is no RTR alternative, they are very welcome and do nicely.

GNR(I) Coach Build

 

After building some BUT Railcars I needed some GNR coaches to make up an Enterprise rake.  Worsley Works provided their brass sides and ends for a B9, D5 & L12’s and so the production line started.

This time I’m trying a new approach, I’m using 57’ RTR underframes and bogies and adding the extra foot with plasticard buffer beams to get the right length.
