kirley
NIR Class 70 6 Car Set -Brake/1st #701 I had ordered this etch from Worsley Works back in Dec but Allen has to fill his sheet with 7 pairs of ‘Irish’ stock before he will sent it to be etched. By March I was the only one who had placed an order so I decided to give up on waiting until Allen got his sheet filled and went for Comet LMS brass sides and use the cut & shut method. Colin Smith introduced me to this method when he helped me build some MPD a few years ago. I had some off cuts left over from then and ordered a LMS Corridor Brake/First. As you can see it’s like making your own jig-saw trying to work out what fits best where. Having a scale drawing was essential. How to cut the brass ‘accurately’ was my biggest concern so I tried a number of approaches. I ended up using a razor saw which gave the best results with everything clamped down. As it turned out soldering the bits together was the easiest bit. The end result after a clean- up and wash. Today I went to the roof space to get a 57’ donor coach to attach the sides too but Sods Law I only had 60’s in the wrong boxes so now I have to wait on one coming from ebay. Hi Kieran, clever work as ever. Ironic your looking for 57', Dapol are out of production of 60' staniers and so are all the retailers. I couldn't find 60' donors anywhere (C101A etc). Only 57' in stock. 1
RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted March 10, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 10, 2021 https://www.facebook.com/Porthmadog-Models-1793485064212923/ Check out this gent in Porthmadog, now this might be out of date but in Autumn on my last legal and only visit to Port I spied in the window a good selection of the coach kit bags on hangers. I had intended to get some for my 70 class but that is quite a way away so get in ! Robert

Down but when I visit my daughter in Anglesey I often do a run there, before the lockdown of-course.
kirley
NIR Class 70 6 Car Set -Brake/1st #701 My new donor arrived, a Hornby LMS. Cut out the ‘new’ windows, attached the brass sides and added some filler between the joins. Sides sanded, roof vents added & a primer coat to see all the flaws. Couplings and wheels replaced, new buffers and coupling hooks added. Built the interior using parts of the Hornby seating and plasticard. More filling and sanding. 4 5

kirley
Grain Containers 20' containers minus roofs but covered with a trapulin were used to haul grain for a period. With thanks to Mark Hodge for the inspiration and pictures.
Mike 84C
The wagon sheets are looking good Kieran. But I am curious how they stopped water getting inside the container because the top ISO pockets are visible and how were the sheets secured? Twenty yrs in the grain trade just led my eye straight there!! Keep your sheets tight 'cos grain and water do not mix unless you want to make spirits. Keep up the good work. 2

Maybe Mark Hodge's photo answers your question. I thought about doing the rope ties...but only for a few minutes, sure no one would notice.
kirley
NIR Class 70 6 Car Set + DVT At last moving to the painting stage. Masking completed, ready for the second colour. Some colour at last but touch-up, varnish, decals, glazing, hoses, gangways and lots of other bits to do. 5 2
RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted April 6, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 6, 2021 The pictures look really good and the motor car front curves in the ivory look spot on. I hope my 3 car comes out as well. I have now sourced Dapol 57 and 60 foot donors to follow down your road- mine will most likely end up in the later NIR blue/ maroon livery. As an side I was going to ask Allen if he would draw up an etch for 63 - 65 single car MPD, and this would end up as the ivory maroon livery item.
colmflanagan
A fine looking train, and hopefully I'll get a chance to see it in action sometime. Colm 1

Here's two I did using Comet LMS sides, cut & shut using Black Beetle motors which were easy to get back in 2014. 3

kirley
NIR Class 70 6 Car Set + DVT Not very exciting, cutting out the glazing using acetate sheet, two of the coaches I got away with a single strip each side, the rest had to be custom cut to fit windows and doors. I’ve taped them to sheets of paper as the decals have first to be applied and sealed with varnish before I can permanently install the glazing. Grab and door handles made. The door handles are long pins filled flat each side. Progress stalled when the wrong size decals were sent. Correct ones now applied along with door and grab handles attached. Intermediate Car No. 728 just to have the roof stuck down. Intermediate Car No. 723 and Dining Car No. 550 decaled and glazed. First/Brake No. 701 and DVT No. 711 completed. I’m pleased the way 701 turned out, it was made up of Comet LMS brass sides, cut and shut. 6 1

kirley
NIR Class 70 6 Car Set + DVT I fitted a headlight to the non-motorised Power Car using a pickup from the wheels. The only problem was the light stayed on all the time. I found micro-switches from Layouts4u and added one to the underneath of the chassis so it can be switched on or off depending on the direction of travel. Allen Doherty failed to send name plates as part of the etches but Darius came to the rescue and sent me some spares free of charge. Power Car No. 75 almost there. When I tested it the headlight worked now it doesn’t the joys of model making. It took drastic action the remove the led but it’s sorted now. Power Car #75 Power Car # 72 That's it, a 6 Car set + a DVT, many thanks to all who helped me through this project. Some video of it running on the layout to follow. 1 1
