Just a quick note to say thank you for the many positive comments that people have made, they are very much appreciated.

It will all be a bit quiet for a while as I get to grips with the business and set things up so that I can properly run things from down here in Bath, but I am looking forward to moving the project forwards in the New Year. I hope to keep up the very high standards of the last 35 years and am very pleased that Paul has indicated his willingness to remain very much involved on the creative side of things for the immediate future.

I hope to get the Wild Swan website built over the holiday period but in the meantime the email address is already functioning at:

sales@wildswanbooks.co.uk

Thank you again for your encouragement and the compliments of the season to all readers far and wide.

And the same to you too, Simon.

With your attention to detail and the high standards you set yourself (apart from your choice of jumpers that is) I'm sure this will be a roaring sucess.

Now, when do we get Volume Three of Banbury & Cheltenham??

All the best!

Please, not more wishlists.

A specialist publisher is very much in the hands of the authors, many of whom do it as a "hobby" and to share their knowledge. There are two books of interest to me that would add to/ complete an existing series, but I feel that there is no point in wasting Simon's time in pressurising for answer as to when/if  they will be available.

Why the problem with wish list there are hundreds on here !! Surely they help publishers , manufacturers etc etc to know what people want to buy and therefore they make money and keep their customers happy (ish).  They are even more important for the limited specialist market they then know what will sell :paint:

It's very good to know that the future of WSP is assured & I'm sure we all wish you success Simon. One feature that has made WS books special is the large number of historic photo collections that Paul seems to have had access to. Will these still be available for you to use?

Exactly!

It isn't always about knowing what to sell, it's about what you can produce. Specialist publishers often rely on what is made available to them. It isn't always possible to commission material to satisfy what some people on RMweb think you should produce. So while wishlists might help the RTR manufacturers choose a direction for their new product development, I think they are of less use to the "smaller" suppliers, who also probably have closer face to face contact with their customers and can get an understanding of what is popular.

A publisher will also have a good record of sales patterns, what is left in stock from a print run, etc. So what might seem a popular choice to a relatively small number of posters on a wishlist, might not always appear to be such a good idea to the producer. Sales volumes are also quite often a lot lower and slower than many might think for the really specialist books, as I found from my time on the committee of the LNWR Society, a small publisher in its own right.

I am sure Simon will have a good handle of what sells and probably a good idea of what is worth publishing in the future from the material available to him. I wish him well and look forward to buying any new books of interest to me.

So who's going to make the tea when we visit the shop now - His Superlativeness will no doubt be too busy for that, unless he expands to new premises and takes on an army of new staff! :jester:

I'd happily work for Mr Castens, where do I sign?

Are you sure - wanna borrow a pen, then?  :mail:

I did tell Simon that I'd like to work for him, in person on Friday.

Still, left the shop £150 down! (but very happy with No; 88 in her beautiful blueness {take that however you wish}).

Had wondered, if it did come to it, what the interview might entail... "here's a £5, go get some biscuits, your choice......", no pressure there then!

I am still working on a new Wild Swan website to replace the current temporary arrangement, this should be available shortly and will set out ideas for the future in a bit more detail.

I also now have a printed list of all available titles which I am happy to supply to anyone who would like one.

Other new titles are in the pipeline too.

Thanks for reading this and apologies for "blatant plug" aspect of this post(!)

Best Wishes

How's about a comprehensive tome on " Wild Swan Sausages the Definitive Guide" it could curry a lot of interest amongst the members of this parish.

Now, who could we nominate to write such a book ? Hmmmm

Isn't it illegal to make Wild Swans into sausages?

Not if you get some of the older ones off your shelf, rip em up, make an origami replica then deep fry em ! :)
