Class 73 Photos

Just wish I had not worn specs...

There was an interesting side-effect of wearing specs with my early photos. The extra distance between eyeball and viewfinder meant that I always left extra space around the subject. It annoyed me at the time, when I was trying to take photos with a bit of in-your-face impact. But all these years later, I keep finding interesting incidental details at the edges.

Good luck!

Thought I would add a few shots of these lovely locos, with a few minutes to spare this evening.  Hope they are of interest.

73 105  1983.  Not the best shot, but how I remember Brighton station: gloomy, grubby, decaying, but wonderful.  N.b. 'Tesco's bag on buffer-stop, left.

A bit of GBRf action at Pulborough today.

73962 heads the 11:23 Tonbridge West Yard to Brighton via Blackfriars and Littlehampton towards Cray Lane Bridge on a very warm August bank holiday Monday. 73963 brings up the rear.

Class 73 heaven!

830329430_Horsham73s.jpg.84dc7c0a19014da486736f28be97d681.jpg

Four examples are stabled at Horsham yard earlier today (27th January). Not 100% sure why they are here, but wonder if it is connected to the line between Redhill and Tonbridge being closed.

73213 and 73201 top and tail the front train, whilst 73119 and 73212 are on the rear set. The usual fare of MPVs are scattered around, as well as a class 700 in the recently installed stabling sidings beyond.

I think the wagons the 73s are topping and tailing are ones used to apply de-icing fluid to the con rail.

Given winters not over and Horsham is the base for the MPV fleet also used on such duties, it may just be Horsham is a convenient place to stable them while its still winter

Yes there the snow and ice treatment trains they do usually run from tonbridge yard though.

It could be, but I don't normally see them there. The MPVs yes, but they normally share the yard with various track machines. Then again, at this time of year I normally pass Horsham yard in the dark, so it could be a regular thing. It's a good vantage point from that bridge.

Following government current restrictions due to the Coronavirus has given me the time to delve into the far corners of my photo archive and trawl up some images that might be of interest.

73107, named 'Spitfire' and owned at the time by Fragonset, stabled at platform 1 at Bournemouth on the 28th May 2005.

The 73 is now in service with GBRf and is named Tracy.

Did the first batch all have oval coach style buffers? the reason I ask is that I've just bought a Limby one and the buffers don't look right! I think mine's E6003. Hornby mech but won't pull 8 coaches..

Yes the JAs were built with oval buffers.

Notice the mounting for the collar when not in use, just like with coaches.

With the JBs and 33/1s the buffer head was rotated to allow the buffer shank to be slid in/out, then rotated back again to lock the buffer in position
