Class 73 Photos

There has been a lot of loco activity around the Arun valley lately. Mainly class 66, but today the 73s came out to play. Here is 73128 leading 73107 heading north from Pulborough with the 3Y07 04:13 Tonbridge West Yard - Tonbridge West Yard via Brighton and Havant on 23rd March.

I am curious what the wagons are - they have been running back and forth over the last few days. Any ideas?

Those are wagons from a SITT (Snow and Ice Treatment Train). Not quite sure why they're out at the moment with temperatures well above freezing.

Two driving coaches from a 4VEP, and a red blind on the 73 - was it push-pull? Presumably that’s possible with the SR’s legendary compatibility?

Yes, it was and it did push-pull in and out of the Walk.

73964 at Rock Ferry on 7th April 2021.

4) 73 964 at Rock Ferry on 7th April 2021

Then Bebington

73 964 at Bebington on 7th April 2021

Should have been road learning to New Brighton and West Kirby but no trip cocks fitted so not allowed into Mersey tunnels during normal traffic. Traincrew report it was authorised last week by a local Network Rail manager but signaller had no paperwork.

Put away at Rock Ferry whilst they tried to sort it out. in the end went straight back to Warrington. Same thing happened today.

Was the crew on it GB or colas?

Colas crew for the PLPR train. Loco on hire due to various issues with the Minions when they tried in February and March. Never made it beyond Birkenhead Central that time.

Far too over complicated those minions, the GB 73s are a bit complicated and temperamental at the best of times but are far simpler than the NR ones

Is it the NR minion ones that have multiple small engines?

73971 leaving Glenury Viaduct working an Edinburgh-Aberdeen clayhills run. Not sure of the purpose of this working as it arrives in Edinburgh from Aberdeen in the morning and sits for a couple of hours before returning north.

66755 that was on this run last week due to a lack of available 73s would have made a nicer shot here I think.

A pair of GBRF 73s leave Alresford propelling the LT 4TC set during last month's Diesel Gala - 73136 closest to the camera, I didn't note the number of the other.

The Minions have 2x Cummins QSK19 engines - quite possibly of the same type as fitted to each of the 220/221/222 Voayger/Meridian fleet
