Popular Post milocomarty
Hi all, dunno if I'm at the right place here, could post in the USA department or the narrow gauge but it's a layout after all. Started way back in 2013 on this layout. Promised the OntraX show in Utrecht NL a new layout and stepped down from a 16 meter round about to a 8 meters straight one. Although it's part of a bigger layout the Cardigan Bay Coastal Railroad it's in my workshop since then. After less then a year with a couple of days to go the layout looked like this.. I went full steam ahead to give it a least a bit of a finished look before the first 2014 show. So I attended the show after 3 more days work..still lacking a lot of detail.. After the show it was time to finish it, starting with the modules close to the fiddle and work my way around to the wharf. Ment building over 70 large trees and an incredible amount of small bushes..so I'm now halfway to the wharf finishing the area around the engine house and the turntable..will follow with some random shots of the work done in 9 months time.... A couple of shots more to give a general idea how the modules look today.. Starting to shape up the way I like it, massive scenery and small trains... Slowly inch by inch I'm moving on adding tufts, bushes and weed. Although I own a 70kV static device I find it easier and less messier this way.. Adding greens around the enginehouse and the back of this module, some in the space between the tracks...almost done.. Dipdabdab....bit of paint added to the waves...black, phtalo blue and titanium buff as part of the latest scene added.. A pier with shacks, floating pier added and a small boat under contruction.. Getting late around here and I quit for now. Hope you like it, I'll be back with more detailed shots in the coming days. Feel free to ask questions if you hav'm Grtz Martin
RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 26, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2014 I really like this, looks like the Maine coastline. Among many interesting features, how do you get the distressed paint effect on the timber buildings? Dava
artizen
Good to see you on here Marty. Keep posting photos. This is another inspiring layout much in the same league as Coast Line.
David C
Brilliant scenic work! I, too, would be interested to know how you did the distressed paint work - and the bushes, trees, grass etc etc. Presumably you use a Grassmaster or similar? Thanks for posting the photos. CourthsVeil
Dava and David, if you are not afraid of reading German mixed with English, you might have a look at the progress report there... Armin PS: phantastic word, truly a master ! Thanks for sharing, Martin ! Edited December 26, 2014 by CourthsVeil
milocomarty
Thanks for the warm welcome gents.. Dava, the peeling / distressed paint is a technique I adapted from Chuck Doan, after a wash with a grey A/I solution I add mineral spirits to the boards. Don't let this dry but when it looses its shine I paint a first coat of acrylic paint over it. When dry a second coat of paint. Let dry for a while nd score it with an #11 blade with the grain lightly. Now you can use a goord sticking tape to get rid of the paint... David I do use a static machine like the grassmaster, but the lack of power on the Noch decided me to buy the Maag Eroflock. This is a huge 70kV machine I also use for profession. Besides that, I'm realy into the static stuff I have 3 machines from RTS Germany called the Greenkeeper, they go up from 15 to 55 kV. I know a lot of you say its expencive but I believe you need a good machine for doin this..

milocomarty
Love to build trees out of florist wire, most of them look like this when the frame is ready.. cover them with a mixture of PVA / latex wallpaint and MDF sawdust out of the shop (got plenty of that ) thicken trunks by adding several layers..paint them with wallpaint and artist acrylics and start adding Noch 12mm fibers with a static applicator.. work in layers and keep it easy on the fibers..adding a coat of 6mm fibers and a final layer of 2mm fibers.. when done a quick spray with a camopaint out of a rattlecan, think this is olive drab... next a coat of fine scatter material think this is from the model tree shop, ordered it on the net.. Do use sprayglue in all these steps and try to spray as much as I can on the outside of the branches..as final I spray a matte laquer to get rid of the stickyness andto glue it all even more together..fibers and scattermaterials on place I don't want them...brush them away with a stiff brush and mineral spirits.. I do keep in mind that most of the time trees grow in small groups..so I do build groups of 3 to 5 or even more trees Finaly placed on the layout..

milocomarty
Thanks guys ! Almost make me blush Picked up playin around with an airbrush lately. Most of my rolling stock still needs to be weathered and I ordered a cheap chinese clone a long time ago. Picked up a couple of Vllejo weathering sets to do the job.. First project on hand a Bmann Forney.. painted completely with Vallejo modelair, modelcolor..
milocomarty
Couple of things done, painting figures..what a job ! Time consuming and then you place them in a coach car... hardly visable but well they are maybe to modern for the era, 1:50 Preisers..finished one more.. Love that scen !! Into crate building to, couple to finish couple already on the layout.. and I redid the water, was way to busy IMO.. milocomarty
Started weathering a couple of coalcars, still a bit unshure about the trucks on this 18' Bmann, the look a bit wide in my eyes..maybe I should replace them with BVM T-2's..
milocomarty
Well now I have them painted and weathered. Leave the trucks for now alrhough I think the would look better with narrower trucks...added a bit of detail like real coal..just have to paint steps, styrups and breakwheels..
milocomarty
Reworked track, airbrushed a bit more color onit..have to do all modules now, booked for a show the weekend of the 17th..John a friend of mine is working on the enginehouse, he's doin a dormer at the moment..
milocomarty
Reworked more trackwork, with a show coming up next weekend it looks a bit funny when only 2 of the modules sprayed..used Vallejo dark german brown and rust for the rustparts and 3 colors for dirt. Clean the track with Vallejo airbrush cleaner, also use this to blend all the colors..

Absolutely in the right place, its a layout, so put it in the layouts section! Marvelous layout, superb modelling; thanks very much for sharing it. All the best, Dave. artizen
I think all layouts should appear in the layouts section including NG and those based on real locations but that's just so I can find gems like this without spending way too long trawling all the sections for eye candy!
