On the right you can see an off-cut of MDF that I clamped to the end of the baseboard to form a temporary buffer stop.

Looks rather essential, does that.

A bet that was a nice moment, as a first (albeit hand operated) train to make into the re-purposed station.

As you know, normally I would use the Hornby-Dublo buffer stops but in this case the three tracks extend all the way to the baseboard edge (obviously), so I decided that the MDF was a better bet.

It was indeed, Graham. It will be even nicer when it does it - and makes it out again - without being pushed (possibly tomorrow).

Wot! No brad used as a buffer bar!? Standard Leeds MRS fitting for sidings under constru tion I thought!!!

The mdf does cover a few tracks though..but don't wang the couplings into it too hard.

@Chamby You must feel awful. In my junk box are these items. Both have slight damage - clips on boiler broken and fittings missing/broken on the tender but if they help they are yours. They can be in the post on Tuesday.

What a wonderful and unexpected offer, thank you.  I’ll send a p.m.

Easter Day saw more good progress at St Enodoc. I finished wiring all the track that I've laid so far and tested it. Apart from swapping the red and black wires on the changeover switch at 15A point motor (the one with the 90 degree adaptor, where I'd guessed which way round they should be - wrongly of course!) everything was fine.

202104040014206onlongclayemptiesatStEnodocDownplatform.JPG.e038044e8c244d1515b8782223a71429.JPG

I therefore ran 4206 into the Down platform as a counterpoint to yesterday's photo. This was all done under its own power (you'll have to take my word for that I'm afraid).

Baz @Barry O is of course right about the MDF, so I stuck some scraps of foam trackbed on it to soften the blow when, not if, necessary.

I did some more testing with 4247 in place of 4206 and also with the short clay trains using 1664 and 7446. All was good.

On Friday I mentioned the position of 10B point. With the change in track layout it could be laid anywhere between the heel of 10A point and the straight track in the Loop.

I've now pretty well decided that the signal box will go on the Down side, with the windows facing the signalman, roughly where the toes of 7B and 10A points meet. The Camping Coach siding will be behind the signal box and has to fit between St Enodoc and the curve at Treloggan Junction. This siding doesn't have to be straight, although I'd prefer it to be where the coach itself will sit, and I'd prefer the coach not to be hidden behind the signal box.

Here are the two extreme possible positions. I think I've made up my mind but I'd like the panel's views on which would be better and why.

I agree with Barry. No2 for me.

The first option is a bit "train set" tidy. Parallel straight lines.

The 2nd looks like it'd been fitted into the landscape, with the minimum

preparation, And therefore cost.

You seem to really be making progress recently John, keep it going.

2nd position for me too, with caveats,

Pro: longer loop - always good.

Con: tighter to the signalbox and needs a curve to be clear.

Which leads to two questions:

Q1 Do you want the camping coach to the right or the left of the signalbox?  Right means position 1, left could be position 2 but depends on space clear of Treloggan Junction.

Then Q2 Which came first the box or the siding?  Box first justifies a curved siding, siding first means the box has to move far enough away to be clear.

So . . . . .

How about point in position 2 to maximise loop length; straight siding; and box mid way between 7A and B where clearance becomes available.

Oh, and a Happy Easter to you.  Mine is just beginning, you know how yours went.

Paul.

P.S. Just looked at the pictures again.  Where is the clearance point in the loop with position 2?  I assumed at the toes but I’m not sure now.  So possibly position 10B with toes at clearance, hopefully at a slight angle to the straight and see where that puts everything.

Add P.S., correct point numbers refs.

I would suggest the second position, but instead of a straight turnout I would opt for a slight curve that matches the large outside curve of the preceding curved turnout.

This would give a smooth transition right through both turnouts and onto the tangent which will look better but more importantky give the stock a smoother ride.

Thanks for all those comments, chaps. They've certainly helped me to think through this.

Responding to a couple of straightforward ones first:

@5BarVT a longer loop isn't critical as there will be plenty of room at the other end and it only needs to hold a short china-clay train anyway.

- @Dr Gerbil-Fritters a curved turnout is possible but a) I want to use the straight B6 that I already have; and b) with a B8 turnout (the shallowest I like to use) and an inner radius of 48" the outer radius would be about 114", so hardly worth the effort of making another point I think.

Paul @5BarVT raised the critical factor, namely clearance points (or, more generally, track spacing). A key parameter is that I don't want the siding to come closer than 60mm centres to the main lines, to maintain the clearances.

20210405002SE10BpointspositionCplanview.JPG.8861c7046ceca48d050c80f1baf7f510.JPG

The Tracksettas show this and, as you can see, as 10B point moves to the left (from position 1 towards position 2) the track centres become less than 60mm, to the extent that at position 2 itself they would barely be 50mm (forgot to take a photo!). This rules out position 2 I'm afraid.

20210405001SE10BpointspositionAplanview.JPG.214a07564d9a2ec8848661204d5f2dbf.JPG

However, to maintain 60mm centres means that 10B point will be as near as makes no odds to position 1, so, for better or worse, that's where it will go.

20210405003SEminimumUpsidingspacing.JPG.7fe13def3c2984ebb1ec855f121038fb.JPG

Now, extending the curve at 60mm centres...

20210405004SEsignalboxat7A-10Atoes.JPG.69c9b918ea020008b08e8cb70e5fed68.JPG

... fouls the signal box between 7B and 10A points, so the siding will have to go behind it. To add a bit more context, I've added a length of track that represents roughly where the curve from Treloggan Junction to Polperran will go.

20210405007SEsignalboxat7A-10Atoessiding3.JPG.55dd64596675b350af5ed76e8d08eea5.JPG

20210405008SEsignalboxat7A-10Atoessiding4.JPG.01cf2deb4f6ce95df45c31239e268143.JPG

The straight at the end of the siding is long enough for the Camping Coach, which is an old Tri-ang clerestory third. It's packed away at the moment so I used a 50ft Monster to give me an idea of how it would look.

20210405011SEsignalboxbetween7A-7Bheelssiding1.JPG.87833eaaf7732b88716b6ac876492d5b.JPG

20210405014SEsignalboxbetween7A-7Bheelssiding2.JPG.bfd9f332bd8707e44714b390f9f5c3d1.JPG

Next I moved the signal box between 7A and 7B points as suggested by Paul. This gives room for the Camping Coach on the station side of the signal box...

20210405012SEsignalboxat7Bsiding1.JPG.81373d29888bf730dadac6239d921adb.JPG

20210405013SEsignalboxat7Bsiding2.JPG.5ccd49ddfd7b8198423c60658b330876.JPG

...as does placing the signal box opposite the crossing of 7B points.

That's all a bit long-winded, I'm afraid, but if you're still with me it gives me three options for locating the signal box and the Camping Coach:

1. Signal box between 7B and 10A points and Camping Coach on the left - perhaps this puts the Camping Coach too far from the station.

2. Signal box at 7B crossing and Camping Coach on the right - perhaps the space for the Camping Coach is a little cramped.

3. Signal box between 7A and 7B points and Camping Coach to the right - perhaps (the converse of 1) the signal box is too far from the station although the Camping Coach has plenty of room.

There seem to be strengths and weaknesses in all these options, so once again it's over to you folks for your constructive critique please!

Pic 4 shows the box on the line of the siding.

Why can't the box go behind this siding, rather than in front?

Thanks Stu. Yes, in theory it could, but I feel that it just wouldn't look right somehow. Anyway, another factor I didn't mention is that wherever the coach goes I want some campers to be sitting in deckchairs on the main line side of the coach where they will be visible from the operating area, so there has to be space for that. The second photo on this page:

are the sort of thing I'm aiming for.

Hmm.

Will there be another platform, or is the island platform the only one? If so, where is the station building? And is there room for the camping coach siding at the other end of the station ?

How about this for an idea, no camping coach, that will keep the Emmets away.

Second thoughts the blighters might come here for their holidays, is there room for two camping coaches?

To quote my sister (often) “That’s not helping; and you know it.”

:-)

The island platform is the only one, as at Bugle on which St Enodoc is based.

On the island platform, also as at Bugle.

Not really. The goods yard is on the Up side, then there will be the road overbridge, then the junction for the china-clay branch.

You can't see the bridge or junction in this photo, because they're not built yet, but you can see the overall sweep of the station and goods yard:

There’s quite a lot of permanent way around that part of the layout.  It might be worth thinking about the practicalities such as how all the happy campers and their children might gain access to and from the coach, they would need a safe means of egress to visit the local pasty shop and the rest of Gods own country, without having to cross the main running lines every time.

Yes, Phil, I'm still thinking about that.

What about a kickback siding from the coal siding, and the camping coach roughly where the box is in that last photo, just behind the big hole (control panel? )

That's a possibility, Nick, but I'm not sure that a kickback would look right. I'd still need to work out the access route too.

The big hole, by the way, is where the uncoupler wires came up to the panel on the previous layout:

FWIW I like the arrangement in pics 5 & 6 as it seems less 'crowded' but as has been said how will the happy campers get to the coach without breaking their necks on point rodding etc? Would there be  room beyond the coach - ie away from the station - for a path?
