RMweb Premium St Enodoc Posted September 18, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 18, 2021 (edited) More odds and ends today. Before tea time I finished off the switch and remote LED for Polperran points power Like a swan, or an iceberg, most of the action is below the surface but here is what you can see from the operating area. It's the same as the other four, so not very exciting I'm afraid. After tea, I painted the rails on the Branch as far as Polperran, including a bit of the Barry slip so that it won't show up so much through the hole in the backscene. That was even less exciting, so I didn't bother taking a photo. Not sure what I will do tomorrow. Possibly take the bits of St Enodoc lever frame out of their box and then put them back again. We shall see. Edited June 29, 2022 by St Enodoc images restored 16

Hardly an objective statistic but thinking of all the (not very many) running line derailments I've directly come across over the years - 1 as a result of a hot box and collapse of the axlebox, 'W' iron, etc leaving the journal running on the wagon side frame (I knew of 1 other - off my patch - due to a hot box/uneven loading) 1 as a result of the disintegration of a diamond crossing under loaded 21 ton hopper wagons in a stone train 1 at a running line catch point during SLW 3 at trap points one of which was a runaway, the other two were SPADs but both of those, including a passenger in one instance, saw the loco totally derailed and dug in up to its traction motors. In all three cases there would not have been a collision if the trap points hadn't been there. 6

RMweb Premium Popular Post St Enodoc Posted September 19, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 19, 2021 (edited) Odds and ends yet again today. First, I cleaned the the rail heads that I painted yesterday. There's nothing now to stop me ballasting all the way from St Enodoc to Wheal Veronica and Treloggan Junction, although I won't do any of the Treloggan Junction points until the whole triangle is built. After that, I mulled over the design of the L-girders for Pentowan. I won't be making these yet but as I'll probably go to the DIY warehouse soon I wanted to work out how much timber to get. Next, I did indeed get some of the St Enodoc lever frame parts out, to see how far I could get with construction before I need to enlist @RudderC Charles' help with drilling and tapping. The answer was, as I expected, "not very". I did assemble the bearers, which support the tappet guides and the levers, and attached them to the rear lever guide but the tappet guides themselves need machining before assembly, so I couldn't go any further. Nevertheless, it did result in a skeleton of the outermost parts of the frame, which I took over to St Enodoc to see where it would fit best. By trimming some excess length off a joist, I think the lever frame can sit just to the left of the station boards, which should prevent the two signalmen (Porthmellyn Road and St Enodoc) shoulder-barging each other during running sessions. After tea, I decided to move some trains around at Paddington and Penzance so that as many roads as possible have only one train in them. That will make it easier to play trains at random pending the next running session, when I will move the trains back to where they should be. That went well at Paddington but when it came to Penzance I found that many of the route buttons weren't doing anything. After a process of elimination it turned out that 13 of the 16 point motors (Cobalt iP Digital) had lost their addresses so weren't responding to the Mini-Panel. I've never had this happen before and I don't know why it would - any ideas? Anyway, once I'd reprogrammed them there was only time to run one train before I had to finish. So, overall, a successful weekend's work apart from the last hour. I think it really will be ballasting next. I've never had this happen before and I don't know why it would - any ideas? After sleeping on it, and reviewing a few topics on here (including one that I'd forgotten I'd contributed to), I think that this might be another manifestation of the electrical noise business. As such, I'm considering a major tidy-up of the accessory bus runs, which have always been rather convoluted due to the stage-by-stage way I built Paddington and Penzance but also as a result of the changeover from H&M point motors to Cobalts a couple of years ago. It's not a task to be undertaken lightly, as it will involve a goodly number of hours sitting on the floor under the layout, but it might be a worthwhile thing to do - eventually...
