The progress this week is the ongoing saga of Sprat and Winkle couplings for Ruan's wagon fleet, ready for the Bristol show.

S&W couplings construction is now complete thankfully, just need fitting to the wagons now and setting up.

We had a running session on the test track layout which has recently been put back up, this highlighted a few issues which have now been addressed and it is running well.

Hi All

The saga of the Sprat and Winkle couplings continues, whilst testing them it was found that the etches ae not consistent and coming uncoupled. We are now checking and fettling them. It's a bit of a pain now that they are on the wagons, there has been a lot of very blue language the last few club nights.

We had a good weekend at the Bristol Exhibition this weekend with Ruan, which won the cup for the best Association Layout.

There were several good layouts at the show but it was particularly good to see Paynestown.

Below are some pictures of Ruan taken over the weekend.

Just returned from the excellent Derby show this weekend held in the Roundhouse.

We took Tipham along which was very well received with many great comments and a few more potential invites.

A great show and a great venue.

We made a start on our new project this week.

This will be a BR (E) / BR (M) layout again set in the 1950's / 60's.

The baseboards will be in a U shape and have been recycled from a previous layout which had come to the end of it's life.

Hi All

Sorry for the lack of posts lately but other things got in the way. The first thing to mention that next Saturday the 27th June is the Plymouth show, this will be held in the Abbey Hall as it was last year, this is just behind St Andrews Church.

Other news Steve has nearly completed the new return ends for Merryfield Lane  which link the scenic boards to the fiddle yard. Phil is progressing with the next exhibition layout and has almost finished wiring the centre section ready for  turnout testing etc. He will then move on to the other board which has turnouts on. Harry has made a start on the fiddle yard boards.

Ian's layout East Wickersham which is due for it's début next week has had some additional scenic work done to it by Steve.

Chris's  layout Ruan has had one of the Dapol signals modified due to a failure of the motor this operates using a Tortoise point motor. These Dapol signals although very nice appear to be very susceptible to motor failure.

Ian has started a shunting puzzle layout, he has got the basic baseboard together and should soon start track laying.

well that's about it for now, the updates may not be in strict chronological order and sometimes there has been progress on a wide front. Please don't forget the show.

Plymouth Show , 27 June 15 10.00am 'til 4.00pm. The Abbey Hall, Catherine Street, Plymouth. PL1 2AD.

Yesterday we held our annual exhibition in the Abbey Hall.

Although this is only a small show compared to the one we ran in the Guildhall it was still a successful day with a steady stream of visitors.

Thank you to everyone who attended.

As Ian has said above it was a successful show, the only down side was finding out that Hobbiton End would be unable to appear, whilst we were imbibing one or two sherberts after Friday nights setting up, leading to some hurried discussion on the logistics of getting Tipham to the show along with other stuff on the Saturday morning. Mr Blackrat was pointed out to me, with the descrption that his shirt was somewhat restrained on the day, being a "a nice little pink number".

Since the show, progress is being made on three layouts "Phils" layout is almost ready for it's first working trials following a lot of colourful language whilst he was jury rigging power to the points. He is now on Holiday for a couple of weeks, so there will be no progress there. Ian has got the trackbed sorted on his shunting puzzle and has now started the process of terra-forming using polystyrene blocks. Finally Steve is cutting and fixing the track beds for the BR (E/M)Region layouts.

I think this brings it pretty much up to date.

Today we took East Wickersham to the model show in Torpoint,

This is only a small show which caters mainly for boat and model kit builders it does have a small railway presence.

However the show was very poorly attended (30 ish people all day) which was a pity, so is unlikely to be held again.

Yesterday we took the opportunity to set Merryfield Lane up and test the newly constructed curves to the fiddle yard.

This give the layout an overall dimension of 18'x8'.

As the layout has now been split to allow the yard to be shunted independently of the main line it was important to check that stock fitted with Spratt and Winkle couplings would traverse the layout without any issues which fortunately they did.

This give a good overall impression of the improvements.

A Class 22 traverses the new curves.

A view of the engine shed end.

There are no exhibitions currently planned for Merryfield Lane but we do have a pending visit from a fellow Plymouth model railway club so it was good to check all was in order.

Work has been progressing on the new Eastern Region layout.

The track work has been temporarily pinned in place to ensure that it fits and look right.  We are quite happy with the track layout but there will need to be a few minor alterations required just to widen the base board for what will become the bay platform.

Have made a start on the track work for the layout and installed one of the point motors.  These are the MERG Easy Points kit which is basically a Servo, a mounting bracket and a small circuit board of electrical wizardry.  It is the first time I have used this system so it will be interesting to see how we get on.  The point polarity will be via a small micro-switch which is mounted on the bracket and made or broken by the servo arm.

I have also wired up the 2 electrofrog  points and painted the baseboard a basic base colour.

Last night we invited members from the Plymouth North Road Club over to our clubroom for some tea and biscuits and a social get together.

This went very well and it was good to foster relations with other railway clubs and modelers in our area alike.

Hopefully we will do something similar in the future.
