Having recovered my equanimity after the onslaught of armour piercing comestibles, I thought I should comment on the issue of the cladding sheets spaced off the side faces of the tanks on condensing locos. There were two reasons for the outer plates:

1 - To help channel the cooling air to the tank and prevent overheating the feed water (injectors don't normally work well with hot feed water).

2 - To keep the outer surface of the loco cooler to the touch - so preventing the risk of burns to crews and those passing close to the loco and avoiding damage to the painted livery on the tankside.

On the "Metropolitan Railway" and "Metropolitan District Railway" Circle Line, there were a number of stations where special drain arrangements were installed at the loco watering facilities, to allow the hot water (near boiling!) to be dumped and replaced by cold during a station stop.  The trouble is I can't now remember which stations had that provision - without a lot of hunting??

I suspect other companies using condensor fitted locomotives needed similar facilitities.

Hope that helps

Best wishes for a Good New Year.

Chris H

Blimey, Chris, there's a lot of long words in there for a rolling stock engineer (and one of them seems to be longer than it needed to)!

Happy New Year.

I’m thinking more of the loft. It could be quite nice having all of them set up, lights on, comfy chair, glass of Port. Modelling desk........

We shall of course, see what happens.

You could join them all together with a few lengths of Setrack and just watch the trains go round and round (and round...).

Morning John.

For a variety of reasons, that wouldn't really work as they stand. That said, Bleat could be converted to through running and connect to the proposed S&D terminus.

Mutton is a through station so would require me to build the  Lamb Regis terminus..

Sheep Dip would have to stand alone.

I still think it would be nice to have a room where these could all be set up.

It might well happen.

Short sections of connective track might be possible and a simple fiddle yard in lieu of a terminus could work. I realise things would need to be adapted.

As you know,  my current layout is three connected modules.  They are really good to operate together and this year I will make sure all can be operated separately too.

This is for potential exhibiting (?) and also at this time of year I can move a section into the house as the garage is freezing.

Happy new year.

Although I build mainly single fiddle yard efforts I have added a second FY to the other end of my current effort for run through traffic such as DMU and will be using one again. I will configure the next layout so the new FY2 for layout 1 can act as FY1 for layout 2......modular mini anyone?

It has the additional benefit of allowing a meaningful run round in the design if desired...

Morning Chris,

Looks spot on. I do like the shelves above the left hand fiddle yard.

Very useful for tea/coffee/fizzy pop/ pasties/sandwiches/ cake/sweeties.

 Good design.

That looks very modelable, especially the top photo.

Clearly that is somewhere in the south of the Principality, but given that I don't know the precise location of the end of your road, would you perchance be able to elucidate, my dear fellow, please?

I promise not to come round with a van full of solid milk chocolate pasties.

There is a plan of action in place for just such a scenario.

It's a polite, diplomatic and practical alternative to "Shut the #### up!"

And it works.

Former Taff Vale Railway  (Penarth Harbour & Dock Railway) - "Ely (Fairwater Road) Goods"  .

.

Now beneath Kennilworth Court flats, Waungron Road and just on the up side, and below, Waungon Park station, that's my alma mater, Cantonian High School, in the distance.

.

Looking in the other direction we see 'The Cabin Field'

.

Just two sidings, shunted off the up 'City Line' with a small cattle dock and wiggly tin good shed.

The late Mr Arendt would (hopefully) be impressed

Happy New Year Gunsmoke......and what news on "your ticket ?"

Ah ! Thought it was that neck of the woods.

So that gate looks onto.......Waungron Road ?

Any idea what the wriggly tin/ brick edifice was......and is that a cattle Dock in the lower photo?

Re ticket.......discussed before Christmas and verbal notice of intentions provided. Just need to submit it.

Otherwise all good and reflecting on the fact that by now, I would be going like the clappers trying to finish whatever it was I was taking to Pontcanna.......

No room for pasties although the wagon bottom left is a similar shape.

Morning all...

And anyway, if I were 'to be inspired' and I am not currently in a position to confirm or deny whether that is or is not the case in the first or in fact the subsequent parts thereof, I have a suitable Cardiff based engine, 'in stock', as it were....or were not.....

Oh dear....

What is the very strange shaped 'building' with multi coloured wriggly tin roof to the left of the engine's bunker??

I await a response from Rolley Major on that very subject, Simon.

I am as mystified as you.
