In order to provide some evidence,  I have conducted a short experiment this morning with my 1361.

I have to report that directly out of the box, it's not great.

Jerky, not good at very low speeds.

However, it was only driving it about 2ft in each direction, so it's hardly a fair run.

Once I reshuffle the layouts and T-CATS' loop is deployed, it will get a good run in and I can report back again.

I have, however, also added some spray primer to some walls, but that's another story.

Coloured ice cream? Now that's a novelty, isn't it? I doubt if it will catch on, though.

No, I'm a vanilla person myself, don't like all these modern embellishments.

Oh dear.............actually the B4 is not small. They are quite big chaps for an 0.4.0T.

Next methinks is a Kernow 02. They are reduced and I have a voucher. However, after the Hattons 14xx debacle I have no confidence whatsoever in anything to do with Decidedly Jerky Mechanisms.......sorry DJ Models.

Both of mine ran good straight from the box Rob.

Mine too.

Edit: for the avoidance of doubt, I'm talking about the 02 as well.

Seemed to slow through the frogs,  as if the b2b were a tad wide

My second 14XX has b2bs of 15mm, far too wide, hence the problem going through points. This one will also receive a new chassis in due course.

Actually Stu, with regard to anything by DJM, I think it's a totally fair assessment. Mine is exactly the same and may end up taking a one-way trip to Liverpool, next time I have a clear out.

Well that certainly appears to settle it with regards to the 1361. Subject to Stu 's extended test suggesting things will improve then despite them being very reasonable I shall avoid them.

I am more open to suggestion on the 02. However, the bench mark is still the B4. They are just splendid runners. The Hattons P class is pretty damn good as well and probably an equal. Hornby's  Terrier less so and for the life of me I cannot see why not.

Verdict.

Much better than this morning after the very short session on the rolling road.

I think it will improve with more running in, so overall happy with the purchase.

have you tried cleaning all of the "Gunk" lubrication out of the mechanisms and sprayed GT85 into it? Works a dream on most problematic Heljan locos..

No, not yet.

It's been sat in its box since I bought it, and only came out today in response to Rob's question.

But thanks for the advice, will do that before exhibiting.

Do let us know how you get on with that, Stu. Your outcome might determine whether mine makes that one-way journey to Liverpool or not.

That sounds like a fine idea. You don't even need to justify it, just do it.

BTW is NHY581 the registration number of some interesting and obscure vehicle?

Bonjour Wolfie

You're very kind.

With regards to NHY 581, it is indeed an interesting vehicle but far from obscure........

It's a Bentley Mk VI formerly owned by Ivo Peters, now owned by Julian Birley and still seen out and about around the country.

It pops up in quite a few of Ivo's photos.

Here is an image but I'm unable to credit the photographer or in fact locate my images taken when I bumped into it.
