I don't buy many hydraulic images nowadays as I have lots already, but this one did come my way:

19076602003_401633304d.jpgD860_D823_D819_Exeter_1A39_7-9-68 by Robert Carroll, on Flickr

The image appeared in Railway Magazine in 1968.  Apparently all three were under power and D860 was added between Plymouth and Taunton, possibly as a positioning move.

ColourRail have a phot of a triple headed Warship train led by D838, at Newton Abbot dated 09/04/69. Can't link directly but a search of D838 will find it.

As usual, Six Bells Junction has the answers.......

Five and a half hours in Plymouth - what would the punters have done to kill time ?

.

Brian R

In order to answer Brian R's question, I decided on a trip to Plymouth a week or so later, and spend 6 hours on the station.

I have posted a few of these before, for which I apologise if you have seen them already.

My train stopped at Westbury, where I took this photo through the carriage window (hence the reflections).

D1015 on a stone train 18th Oct 1976.

The weather in Plymouth was atrocious, with frequent heavy showers, so I was lucky to get any half-decent photos at all.

This is D1048 preparing to take over a westbound service.

D1048 leaves Plymouth for Penzance.

Sadly, I was not blessed with much luck that day.

I had passed D1053 just outside Reading, D1036 at Taunton and D1065 at Totnes; plus D1033 was leaving Plymouth just as I arrived, so no chance of photos.

Curiously, D1015 turned up at Plymouth about an hour later, despite being seen on the stone train at Westbury.

After a while D1013 appeared from Laira.

And towards the end of the afternoon, the showers relented and the sun came out which made the appearance of D1058 much more pleasing.

And just as my train was about to leave, D1009 arrived from the west on what looks like an ECS working.

However, the trip home was going to be fun, as just prior to that D1015 had backed onto my train to take me back to Reading. This photo was taken from the carriage door as the loco reversed towards me.

So, I suppose that it had not been too bad a day despite the weather, as including the Westerns passed en-route I had seen 9 of the class that day which was only four months before they had all been withdrawn.

Nice ones Jonny!

Had forgotten how bad those locos had been allowed to get externally - but I bet 1015 still gave you a good run back to Reading

And if that was a month after 9th October must have been last knockings for Invader - withdrawn 10/11/76, 1376000 miles on the clock. Only 1005 and 1041 beat that total.

Ah sorry misread your week as month! Hydraulic hallucinations....

Plymouth never seemed to be an easy place to get photos for me - too much clutter, those lamps were always in th e wrong position!

Cheers

No, Plymouth was not very good for photos but by that juncture I had given up the composition, and just pressed the shutter on as many 52s as possible, with lamp posts, platform roof supports, warts and all.

Rather than face the hassle of returning my Coolpix scanner and repair at an unknown cost, I've just purchased a new scanner, a Reflectra X8-Scan. I've got a couple of weeks off, so hope to resume scanning and posting soon.

Don't be too hard on your earliest efforts Phil; better something than nothing.

It might just be that a few tweaks on your scanning software will improve the results.

I have managed to coax a little more detail out of the jpegs just by adjustments to the brightness and contrast, so more detail is there.

Thanks Johnny - that's definitely an improvement!

Is there anything else that can be done as part of the scanning process to make them better?

That will depend on your scanner, and your scanning software.

It is also trial and error with the various black, white and colour gains on different parts of the image.

It is possible to tinker with each photo numerous times and still feel as though an improvement can be made.

Apparently the scanner is due tomorrow - I still will need to return the Nikon though for repair, as my intention is to start a Zenfolio or Flickr account and try and earn a bit of cash to supplement my growing collection of slides.

Three more this week for your review

First a roughly cleaned up shot of Bath road in 1967 - just lovely

post-6925-0-32724300-1438710846_thumb.jpg

Next the North end of Temple Meads an early series GSYP hymek arrives on a service I think from Portsmouth Harbour - note the Presflos bound for Avonside wharf.

Finally this weekend one of my key prize slides, D1002 at Reading in 1970. I was prepared to pay a fair bit for this and was surprised I won it for £35. Earlier this week a rather run of the mill shot of D1016 in blue went for over £70. I guess if you want the slide enough and get into a bidding war that's the result.

Great pics as ever Neil, many thanks for continuing to share what you've found. Relatively speaking, D1016 is one of the lesser photographed Thousands so it's no surprise the slide went for a fair old wedge.

Just as an aside - I was googling for images of 'Paddington 1964' last night in search of something else and for some reason your b&w shot of D7003 at Kemble popped up and brought me scurrying back to this 'ere wonderful thread, subsequently I went through all thirty eight pages with a slight tear in my eye, I'd forgotten just how fantastic the shots herein really are. As has happened a lot these last few months my railway mojo had been flagging somewhat, but this thread has revived it good and proper, for which, again, many thanks.

Hydraulics rule, and that's all there is to it! Roll on D7076 on the SVR in October...!

In my mind's eye Phil I see the perfect Diesel Gala.... down on the Glos & Warks in the depths of Winter, with D821, D832, D1010, D1013, D1015, D1023, D1041, D1048, D1062, D7017, D7018, D7029, D7076 all with re-instated biolers and as many 95'ers as you can muster...

This shot is indeed superb. What makes it for me is not the hydraulics but that fact that the Class 47 cab has been caught perfectly between the wagons on the left.

Yes, the 47 looks to me like it is grinning

cheers
