Satan's Goldfish
Has anyone ever tried back dating a Bachmann JJA autoballaster into a PIA/KPA? http://www.ltsv.com/w_profile_054.php Unless I'm being very blind I can't find a rtr PIA/KPA is already available, and the write up says the main difference is the unloading doors and the occasinal generator...........unless I'm really missing something, how hard can it be? Mark Saunders
I agree the original 'autoballasters' were all converted from Tiphook hoppers of a which the main mod' was the doors and addition of a generator on the production conversions! I have seen one done somewhere and it looked the part, just need Bachmann to backdate! Mark Saunders

Mark Saunders it would have been nice of Bachmann but no sign of it I have subsequently found this chap: https://www.flickr.com/photos/httpwwwpeakdaleworkscom/6254962579/ it looks like an 'easy' enough conversion, toughest bit being the walkway. Just think, to create this from the parts Bachmann already produce they just need to add 2 different details (discharge doors and walkway).
pharrc20
I have a pair of Bachmann Autoballasters stripped down into parts waiting for a suitable gap to commence backdating to a PIA in Tiphook white/blue livery as per the Flickr link. One day!! Cheers Paul

Mark Saunders
For the original JJA conversions, I believe a generator was carried in a KAA well wagon to accompany the set. Cheers, Mick The originals had air operated doors and was to be operated using the Main Reservoir pipe but it did not work so two Compressors were put in a Piggyback! The livery for these ones was Tiphook blue! Mark Saunders
Satan's Goldfish
Kernow's recent offer on the generator equipped wagons saw me order 2 ready for this conversion. Because they're the generator wagons, that end will need further work to return to 'original' condition. I'll add pictures and descriptions as and when things happen, my projects pile just keeps growing!
lyneux
Here is my take on this conversion. I'm doing a short rake of these. More details on my layout thread:
