RMweb Gold Ian Hargrave Posted January 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 29, 2015 Having recently acquired a second Hornby "Bude" R2685,can someone kindly pass on some information as to which of its stable mates were similarly equipped and for how long. I believe 34004 "Yeovil"...which also took part in the 1948 Exchanges, was similarly treated and possibly 34059 but I am unsure. Thanks.
RMweb Gold Graham_Muz Posted January 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 29, 2015 Ian In preparation for the locomotive exchange trials Yeovil, Barnstaple and Bude, all in lined malachite green were renumbered 34004/5 & 6 respectfully (in Southern Sunshine style lettering), had the modified wedge shaped cab front (as per the Hornby Model) and also all received the extended smoke deflectors. For the actual trials they were paired with the Stanier tenders but once back on the SR were reunited with there usual 4500 gallon high sided tenders with “British Railways” letting in Southern Sunshine style. I have already renamed and numbered a Hornby ‘Bude’ as 34004 ‘Yeovil’ and a picture can be fond on my blog here http://grahammuz.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/34004_2.jpgfrom this page http://grahammuz.com/2011/12/05/talking-stock-4-cabs-and-deflectors-bulleid-light-pacific-variations/ further information on the exchange trials can be found on my blog page here http://grahammuz.com/2011/09/26/talking-stock-2-the-1948-locomotive-exchange-trials/ I hope this information helps. Poor Old Bruce
34004 and 5 were rebuilt but 34006 remained in original condition and retained the long deflectors until withdrawn.
RMweb Gold RFS Posted January 30, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 30, 2015 Merchant Navy 35020 also got the long deflectors but lost them when rebuilt in 1956 - http://railphotoprints.zenfolio.com/p668741324/h3dbd927b#h3dbd927b So if Bachmann or Hornby ever decide to do an unrebuilt MN there's an opportunity for some variants. sandra
Does anyone know why they needed lengthened smoke deflectors to take part in the exchange trials?
