Bob110
Can anyone tell me if the G W R 2-8-0 28xx class locos where ever seen on the S&D? Regards Bob
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted February 5, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 5, 2015 They were permitted to Bath but heavily restricted about where they could go once they got there. i suspect they were not permitted on the S&DJtR mainline and they were definitely not permitted on the Burnham branch. Combe Martin
There were a number of 'foreign' locos trialled over the S&D by the Western Region after their takeover (including a WD 2-8-0 and a GWR 0-6-2 tank), but I don't recall seeing any photo (and I've studied loads) of a GWR 28XX. That doesn't of course mean it didn't happen, but I don't recall it being mentioned either. Again, they may have been allowed into BATH, but from memory I've never seen a photo. I don't think ANY outside cylinder ex-GWR tender locos ran over the S&D, probably something to do with their width across the cylinders ?. A GWR Bulldog 4-4-0 (inside cylinders) once hauled a special down the branch from the GWR end to the south coast I think, in the '30s I think. geoffers
I believe it was excessive width across the cylinders that precluded their use. Not sure where I read that though.
bike2steam
This'll give you a good indication of what did run on the S&DJR lines. http://sdjr.net/locolist.html
