DanielB
Last night's progress on the stone cutting factory on Thorne. Progress is fairly slow, mainly due the time taken to make the massive industrial doors. They are made from individual planks, which are strips of basswood aged with a stain of a mix of India ink and isopropyl alcohol, all stuck to a sheet of thin card as a former. The doors will be on hinges so they can open, and the gantry crane will be functional so as to have huge blocks of stone lifted from freight cars, to disappear inside the factory for processing. The extended layout will be making its debut at the Wakefield Model Railway Exhibition in November. Finally, one shot without the flash on my camera, to hopefully give an idea of what it looks like without the light washing out the colours:
DanielB
Small update for this week, the track on Thorne has been laid and is ready for wiring. Photos of the current state of play: I've also made a start on the interior of this building. Much more work to be done, but progress is progress
long island jack
Dan something that may help you ,I glue a plastic strip (about 14mm wide full length of the siding) between the tracks on my fiddle track, it helps railing freight cars, bit like a re-railer, but longer. DanielB
Good afternoon all, It's been a while since I've updated this thread as I've been working on my N scale layout. However, I have recently compiled an album of images of the layout which can be viewed at the link below: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154503234798430.1073741833.539008429&type=1&l=0b6852071a Let me know if anyone has any issues seeing this. Thanks, Dan

DanielB
I may well be at Wakefield 2017 as well. It's one of my "must visit" exhibitions as it's consistently awesome. In addition... DanielB
I popped into the local model shop on Thursday and spied this in the second hand bin: I've never tried making track before, but figured I'd have a go. A couple of hours work tonight and I now have this: It's a little rough but I think it passes muster. I think I'll have another go tomorrow.
DanielB
Over the last couple of days I've had a little bit of time to work on a few jobs for the layout, so before I set off for work this evening I took a few photographs. Firstly, I cut some basswood and left it soaking in a stain of ink and alcohol overnight... ...and earlier this afternoon I managed to turn it into some fencing to go around the junk yard on the extension. Next on this job is to cut and stain the uprights before attaching them to the layout. Second job, I've painted the baseboard on Thorne a mix of black and brown paint, as well as the parts of the backscene where buildings will be. Third job, once the paint had been given a few hours to dry, I have started adding ground cover, and before work today I managed to get some of the DAS clay down to form the surface of the stonecutters yard. Depending on how I feel once I get home after work tomorrow morning, I may carry on on this, or I might work on the fencing some more. Photos of the board as I left it this afternoon, with glue still drying... I'm not 100% on the sandy colour of the ballast on the left hand side, so this might get a spray of paint from my airbrush at a later date.
Robatron86
I like the sandy ballast. You could say that a hopper dropped it there accidentally.
MikeHohn
I like your ballast . . . but I agree with you . . . perhaps it should be toned down a little. Edited September 20, 2016 by MikeHohn
DanielB
I'm wondering if the ballast can be salvaged with a stain of ink and alcohol. Something to think about. I'm much preferring the dirt ballast on the spurs, which is just dried tea leaves, funnily enough.
DanielB
Tonight on my lunch break on a quite quiet night shift, I've managed to get this far on a Clever Models Brick Mercantile building. I'm planning on changing this one up a bit from the norm, and adding a few extra details to make it look that little bit different to the stock kit. I've got about a half dozen other Clever Models kits to build which might find life on the layout somewhere. I've been needing to replace the factory building from over the kickback spur for a while - I was going to go for a plastic kit, but it depends what I find when I'm in the USA next week.
DanielB
Well, apart from the detail parts to be added at a later time, the brick merchantile building is finished.
DanielB
Update time! On Sunday I popped down to the Midland Freemo meet and sold Alpha Packaging, my freemo modules. With some of the cash I got for it, I purchased this bad boy: Bachmann DCC Sound Ten Wheeler. After finishing the brick mercantile building, I thought I'd try my hand at a few more of the Clever Models kits. Namely, the free Sand Drying House they used to offer on their site, as well as a kitbash of 3 of their kits - the brick garage, national stove, and mulchies pawn shop. So far I've gotten the garage and national stove kits kitbashed into a two story structure, which doesn't look like much at the moment but that will change once the pawn shop is added. Sand Drying House: The work in progress Kitbash: The hinges and lock on the double doors on this were sooooo fiddly, but the 3D effect is totally worth it - not that it's hugely clear in the photos!

DanielB
So Thawne is finished, with the exception of the travelling crane for the stonecutters, which is sitting beside me at the moment awaiting paint. Just doing some final work on West Allen Street before Wakefield this weekend. Pop in and say hi if you are visiting! It's certainly come a long way since I last posted photos! I'm really looking forward to playing trains at the show!

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 16, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 16, 2016 Yes the extra length has been accounted for. I have now invested in a special exhibition measuring tape that accounts for all the layouts that are either longer or shorter than the dimensions stated on the booking form. DanielB
I've just measured the layout as a whole - it comes in at 92" - so much shorter than the space I said I'd need. Ah well lol.
