Humbolt136
Hello RMweb! This thread is going to be all about my 3/4 built first layout - the Midland Valley Railway For my first update/post thingy I thought I'd just Show some photos of the layout and explain a bit about it... This layout has two small loops and an inner branch line ( originating from the Hornby trackmatt ), it also has extensive sidings to one end of the two loops. The layout has two towns/villages - Millington and Ruton - these are modelled in modern day as the line is a preserved railway giving me an excuse to run anything I like! More to come soon... Humbolt136
Hello! I'm not entirely sure I'm adding this to my thread properly (by clicking the big 'reply to this topic' button but i couldnt find any alternative. RMweb is still a bit of a mystery it seems! Anyway more photos today... Most of the scenery in these photos is only half complete, especially with the bridge in the last one and all the houses will one day be replaced .I'm quite enjoying taking these photos - I've just found another hundred shots I never knew existed! Been re-running in some old Hornby Dublo locomotives today for a new video on YouTube. I was going to show you which locos with a photo but with this photo I'll leave you guessing... RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted March 28, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2015 This is looking nice, some of the shots are really interesting and I look forward to seeing more. Are you going to scratchbuild your houses etc? Al.
Humbolt136
Thanks Al I haven't really considered buying or scratch building them yet but I'll probably buy most. I'll scratch build one or two such as the one in the photo with the sheep and I'm just about to start building a station building for Ruton using an old Hornby cottage as the starting point that will have an extension on the side made from plasticard...should be up on here soon. Humbolt136
Points If you've watched my most recent layout update on YouTube You'll know I've been Playing with points recently. Heres what happened... I've known for some time that the crossover at the front of the layout was not well in that the points could do this! However as long as you made sure each blade was in the right place before a train passed you could get away with it and the blades didn't really move as a train passed over. The points were about 30+ years old so I guess you can for give them for that! I woke up one morning and decided to 'play trains' as you do only to find that nothing seemed to be able to pass in any direction over one point without short circuiting (which is a pain on my layout as the controller automatically cuts out with any short) I played about with this point for a while and bent the contacts completely out of the way meaning no current could pass through them to no sucess and eventually this sort of happened...oops Even with this it somehow still managed to short! So there was nothing for it - I'd have to take the point out and buy two new ones....and I did. ...a few days later and two new [rather expensive] points! I thought I'd replace both in one to stop the other point with was also very old going the same way as its friend. Here you can see just how much point have changed in a few decades - notice the frog and hinges for the blades gone With a bit of a tight squeeze they all fitted in and the 06 was the first to cross - perfectly I'm glad to say. Unfortunatly the older Tri-ang locos don't feel the same so may have to be re-wheeled :s

Humbolt136
Hill Building Time to build a hill today! This patch of grass, between the mainline and the yard, was placed down years ago just to cover the base board and wasn't even glued in position however now I've a better idea of what I want the landscape to look like I think its about time I built this up a bit So, I began with the polystyrene... ...and papier mashey [ or however that is spelt! ] Decided after the first layer that I wanted a small wall at one end near the tunnel to match with the walls at the base of the embankment on the other side of the line - I'll get a photo of that when I finish. This wall is only brick paper for now maybe in the future if I'm feeling rich I'll replace it with plasticard... Any way that's all for now I'll show you some more as I complete it ... Humbolt136
More hills... Finishing off the hill today. I usually use grass mat just as a base for most things - better looking grass will go over the top in places when ( or if! ) I get round to it. I found that the old piece would (unsurprisingly) no longer fit so I have started again; This starts with some tracing paper to get the right shape... And its glued on with simply PVA over the papier mashe and ballasted up to the edges on the mainline side. Here is the wall now fitted at one end... Just need some trees and foliage I've also been attempting a stone texture on a Hornby water tower...still some work to do yet Tell us what you think Timothy

Humbolt136
Hello RMweb! Firstly sorry for the lack of updates recently, I keep meaning to come on here but I always get side tracked by YouTube or something! Infact it's acctually taken me sooo long to get here now that my YouTube account already has a video up explaining it.... oops. If you don't follow my YouTube channel here is the video... But lets go into that with pictures: So basically I did this...... (It was accident, honest) Yes so I went to change that final point - you remember I changed two and was going to change the third one (that links onto the branch line from the inner loop) later. No? Well scroll up a bit and you'll see when I changed the cross over after it went ka-put I was going to change the third point leading up the branchline. So what I did recently was try to change this third point...only long story short - it was such a tight squeeze to get in it moved everything else around it and caused huge gaps in the trackwork. In trying to close these gaps I sort of completely have taken up half the layout. All the track in red on the diagram below is no longer on the baseboard... So yeah...oops So far all attempts to get rid of these gaps have failed and I've just ended up with a complete mess but I do have a plan... Will keep you updated and all will be explained soon Keep modelling Timothy Any new updates... Sorry about the delay..just posted one now...
