rob D2
I wonder how long these will run for ? Getting pretty old, will the spares be available or do they share much commonality with the sheds ?
cheesysmith
EMD have a lot of spares for old locos. Spares will not be a problem. And if it is, there are a lot of old locos being scraped in the USA where you can get refurbished second hand bits (traction motors and bogies off of the SD40, alternator off the SD50?). Also, IIRC the engine is a E spec, are these able to use 710 bits?
RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted June 28, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 28, 2017 (edited) I have always had a soft spot for 59s as I used to live on Mendip and so seeing them elsewhere reminds me of growing up there. I think Dad liked their relative scarcity. A couple of his photos are below as well. I was interested to see the tale of the failure, above. His reference to cement was, I think, his confusion between aggregates, concrete and cement. He was the least technical person I have known. How he repaired a puncture on his bike I don't know. Steadfast
There's not a lot of commonality between these and the 66s. Obviously there is some, but it's surprising how little. Even things like doors and windows are different. In fact, the doors and quarter light window vary loco to loco in a subclass, let alone between subclasses. It'd be interesting to do a part by part brake down and see what had more in common with a 59, a BR loco (lots of the in cab kit is standard BR) or a 66 (though admittedly this too has standard BR kit!) I think you get my point! Jo

kernowtim
I can remember going to a diesel gala on the Severn valley railway with some mates from the local mrc, this was the first time I had seen one, didn't pay the extra fare for 59 haulage on a rake of grubby hired in mk2 coaches though, first use on a passenger train, got a vhs recording somewhere, maybe some pics!! Think it was 1988, there was a brand new sprinter unit running too. Edited July 2, 2017 by kernowtim

luckymucklebackit
There is already a class 59 appreciation thread, I posted these photographs of 59104 at Motherwell on that thread. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/81788-the-class-59s/?p=1543729 Jim
Guest spet0114
I have fond memories of a trip with my brother in early 1986 to Reading in order to catch a glimpse of one of these new silver beasties. One has to wonder if the significance of 59 001 - first private loco, first of a long line of EMD imports etc - would qualify it for inclusion in the national collection once it's days in traffic are over? RMweb Gold adb968008 Posted August 1, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 1, 2021 The only thing I didnt like about 59’s is it spelled the end for Westbury depot. I used to love bunking that shed, it was a ghost town at weekends, with at least 12-20 locos on it.
Peter Kazmierczak
I've finally managed, this morning, to get a fair shot of 59001 with the bell end leading. Surely this loco must be a candidate for preservation when it hangs up its axles?
