Ruston
14 hours ago, NeilHB said: A little bit of modelling accomplished today, just testing out my new Posca Paint Pens which were a Christmas present. I’ve relined ETCo No.3, changing it from white to straw yellow: I think it looks much better now with the yellow lining. I then had a go at lining at the First/Third composite tramcar: Not too sure about the lining around the windows, but I can always paint over it if needs be. Then the fun started and I lined out the W&S Brake Third - the lining makes a big difference and I really like how this looks: I need to touch the white up in a couple of places where the pen slipped, but that will be easy to sort. What do you think folks? I like the colour on the coach and the horse box. What is it, exactly?

Hi Dave, Thanks, it’s Precision Paints LNER Tourist Stock Green.
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted December 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 28, 2020 Some more updates to share with you all. The NWR Milk Van has now been lettered - plain white HMRS transfers, which have then been painted using a Posca Paint Pen: One side will be lettered NW, and the other ETCo. I then decided that a slight change of livery was in order for the tramcars to match the milk van: A bit more work required to touch the colours up. The lining on ETCo has been adjusted - I treated myself to a set of Rotring drafting pens, which come with a variety of very fine nibs: I’ve also experimented with the lining on the W&S Brake Third: What do you think please folks?

RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted January 6, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 6, 2021 This week I’ve been working on converting an Airfix kit for an Albion 3-point fueller to a more suitable Albion flat bed lorry, which will be owned by the local coal merchants in the 1930s/40s period of the layout. This has been a fun little project, and it’s been nice working on a kit with decent instructions and parts that fit together easily - model railway kit manufacturers please take note! The other item on the workbench is a definite hodgepodge of parts: This is Wellsworth & Suddery Railway ‘Rognvald’, and has been created by marrying a modified Minerva Peckett body to a Midland 1F chassis. It’s very much work in progress at the moment, having had a new footplate and cab/bunker from plasticard. The next step is to extend the saddletank at the rear by approx 15mm to fill the gap between it and the cab. It’s not clear as to the origins of the loco, but @Andrew Youngsuggested that it may have been purchased originally by a South Wales mineral railway, so I’m sticking with that backstory!
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted January 6, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 6, 2021 Gets better and better. The truck and new loco look great. Would it be possible to see more of the loco cab please?

RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted January 6, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 6, 2021 I’ve spent this evening sorting out the rear saddletank extension on ‘Rognvald’: Several layers of 80thou plasticard glued together, cut and filed to the rough shape - lots of filler and sanding required for the next stage. 12
RMweb Gold Popular Post NeilHB Posted January 10, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 10, 2021 Evening folks, some progress to report from the ETC and W&S workshops. Firstly from the W&S workshops, ‘Rognvald’ has had a large quantity of filler applied and smoothed off on the saddletank extension - I think we are on the home straight with the saddletank now: We now move to the ETC workshops at Elsbridge, where the sign writers have been busy applying names to some of the fleet: No.3 has been renamed from ‘Thor’ to ‘Sigmund’. The ETC fleet will be named after historical Sudrian figures - Sigmund was regent of Sodor in the 1100s. Next up is No.5: ‘St. Machan’ - a Slaters MW F class. St Machan is the Sudrian Patron Saint. ‘St. Machan’ arrived on the tramway as a cheap secondhand purchase in the late 1880s, being a cancelled export order. It’s original cab (somewhat sparse and better suited to warmer climes), was quickly replaced in the tramways workshops. It will be good to get this one finished as it’s been on and off the workbench for the best part of 4-5 years... Finally we have No.6: Still work in progress, No.6 is a repainted and modified Minerva Manning Wardle K class. It is named ‘Anopha’, the hill where the quarry at the end of the ETC is located. It arrived on the ETC in the early 1900s as the contractors loco working on building the Ffarquhar extension. When the extension was completed the tramway company took the option to purchase the loco in order to bolster the fleet. It will gain a cab similar to that on No.5 when I’m finished, and probably a replacement set of metal brake blocks, rather than the wooden ones currently carried. Three little tramway maids of work are we, patiently waiting for the Chairman to build a layout so that we can stretch our wheels! What do you think folks?
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted January 24, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 24, 2021 Just a brief update for you all tonight. For a little while I’ve been mulling over ideas for representing a loco at different points in its life, which will help when it comes to running different time periods on the layout. One of the current occupants on the workbench is W&SR A1 Terrier ‘Edric’, in full W&S two tone green livery: What, I wondered, would a later version with A1X boiler look like painted in NWR blue? (I blame @Corbs for this as he posted his 4mm version on Facebook a couple of days ago). As it turns out, it looks rather nice: Its not quite a standard A1X, still retaining the original A1 front sandbox/splashers along the lines of some of the Terriers exported to the Isle of Wight in pre-grouping days. It’s still very much a work in progress, and the next step will be to decide on the lining. I shall also need to order another set of ‘Edric’ plates for it so that it can represent said loco in its post-1915 guise. It’s that’s pesky time-warp thingy again - do two ‘Edric’s’ cancel each other out?! Oh and so much for venturing to the allotment this afternoon as was the original plan - this was our garden at 3pm: Just a tad chilly here in Derby!

RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted February 10, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 10, 2021 Exciting times this evening on the workbench: Managed to sort myself out with an NCE Powercab controller so have been playing, sorry I mean testing, out the sound chip in ETC No.8 ‘Ulf’ - it’s jolly good fun!
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted February 20, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2021 There has been a distinct lack of modelling mojo recently, though it seems to have returned slightly today as I’ve managed to sort out the first three underframes/running gear for a batch of Elsbridge Tramway Company wagons: Three up and running, with parts for a fourth waiting for me to stick it all together. W-irons from Peco/Parkside from their NB open. Brake gear will be single shoe and from the same source. The plan is to have a pair of 4-plank opens, one of which will be fitted with raves for the transportation of sheep, and probably a pair of 3-planks.
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted February 21, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 21, 2021 The first of the wagon bodies has been constructed today - a nice, therapeutic exercise in plasticard has resulted in a 3-plank open: What do you think folks? 12

RMweb Gold Corbs Posted February 21, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 21, 2021 Nice one Neil, there's something very satisfying about batch-building wagons. 2
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted February 25, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2021 Thanks Adrian and Corbs. Next up on the workbench has been the ETCo sheep wagon: I rather enjoyed making this one (somewhat loosely based on those built by the Caledonian), though I shan’t want to make another one yet as it’s made a bit of a dent in my stash of plastic strip. What do you think folks? 15
RMweb Gold Popular Post NeilHB Posted March 4, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 4, 2021 The next two ETCo wagons have now made it onto the workbench. First up we have a small van: I need to add the ironwork and detailing to this, but the basic construction is complete now. This lunchtimes build has been the bodywork for the final chassis, being turned out as a 2-plank dropside: Again, the basic construction is complete, next step is to add the ironwork and final details etc. All four wagons together - this has been a fun batch building project: What do you think please folks? 16 1
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted March 4, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2021 Once again nice work. Cheers, Ade.
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted March 18, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 18, 2021 The Elsbridge Tramway Company are pleased to announce their acquisition of a road bus to supplement services on the tramway and provide connections to outlying settlements in the Els and Callan valleys: In other words the Chairman been bidding on eBay again...jolly good bargain for £6 in total! The yellow is definitely not staying, and the model has already been dismantled down into its component parts ready for a dose of paint stripper and a repaint into ETC colours:
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted March 18, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 18, 2021 I was going to say Florence is a long way from Elsbridge! Nice find, RHD too.
Phil Traxson
Don't know what your intentions are Neil, but I binned the green piece with the curtains altogether, even if the curtains are cut off it completely covers the toplights in the coach. It didn't affect reassembly at all. Phil T.
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted March 19, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 19, 2021 Thanks Corbs. Phil, like you I shall not bother refitting the green plastic piece with the curtains.
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted March 20, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 20, 2021 Wellsworth & Suddery Railway “Rognvald” has reappeared on the workbench...now looking somewhat different to its previous appearance. I wasn’t happy with how it looked mounted on the Midland 1F chassis, and came to the conclusion that said chassis wouldn’t cope with the Peco set track points that I’m planning to use on the layout. I then had a bit of a mad idea, and wondered what it would look like on a Dapol Terrier chassis? Quite nice is the answer to that question: It’s still early days but I really like how this looks now, and I know for definite that the Terrier chassis will cope with the points, so will be fine to run on the layout. It makes for a nice chunky looking loco when compared to the W&S’ ancient Manning Wardle K class “Thorkell”: The ETCo bus spent last night immersed in a tub of neat Dettol, and all paint (and any germs it had) have now been thoroughly removed: Next step ETCo livery!
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted March 24, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 24, 2021 Still a work in progress, but I’m making good progress repainting the bus into ETCo colours: What do you think please folks?
