Devon Diesel Era Photo Record

The SDR Diesel Gala star this year is a hired in Class 24 (5081) from the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire railway. Possibly only the second such machine to visit Devon if one counts the carriage heating unit stationed at Newton Abbot for a few years. Did one ever work into Riverside Yard?

Gary

There's a picture of 24061 when it had been claimed by Derby Research Centre as 97201 - at Totnes on a test train in 1979 in Strathwoods 70s Spotting Days round the West Country. Hauling a couple of lab mark 1s separated by a converted VDA or VAA. Tatty rail blue.

Best regards

D5054 (ADB 968008) Carriage Heating Unit (4/80) noted at Newton Abbot (as referenced in post #397). The equivalent unit at Exeter was housed in a vehicle that resembled the old horse box wagons and was used to heat the sleeping car that was attached to the up sleeper. I am not aware of sleeping cars being attached at Newton Abbot so am not sure of it's precise role. I believe it remained in situ for the duration of it's stay at Newton. As one of the last survivors it has been preserved. Four still exist of a class of 151 with 5032 and 5061 on the North York Moor's Railway, 5054 on the East Lancs and 5081 G & W Rly. I believe this concludes the complete history of Class 24's in Devon!

New information 4 minutes before my last post! Total 3 seen in Devon! Thanks for the info. I have never seen any other pictures of 24061's visit.

A role previously performed by Class 22s; the Summer Saturday station pilot for Paignton. 7574 resting in Queens Park Sidings 22/7/72. There was still enough work to be done in the early 1970's to warrant a loco from early morning until the evening. Only a few were still in GFYE that came to the South West.

Exeter St David's 15/7/72. 7506 and 7504 about to couple on to the down Paddington To Barnstaple service which has arrived in Platform One. Interestingly the correct headcode 1A99 is being displayed so perhaps they came on at Taunton and have run round. Another poor but interesting record of one of the last of the Paddington to branchline Summer Saturday services. Amazingly we still have the through Newquay trains over 40 years on.

I don't have many photos of class 25s in Devon, but here are a couple at Exeter near the end of their time in the West Country

post-7081-0-99170900-1479306635_thumb.jpg

25155 stabled at Exeter St Davids, having briefly been allocated to Laira in 1972 this loco returned there in 1977,

but within six months of this photo it was transferred to Springs Branch before quickly going into store, taken  8/4/80.

post-7081-0-21124600-1479307195_thumb.jpg

With even less time still to spend in the West Country 25058, which was transferred away to Bescot in October 1980,

is seen arriving at Exeter St Davids with the 18.05 departure from Barnstaple, taken 19/7/80

cheers

I'm more interested in 25 058's train, looks like a Mk1 TSO/SK, then Mk2 TSO (different body profile), then Mk1 BSK and a GUV - marvellous variety & great inspiration for my planned layout based on the North Devon line. Strangely there's no 1st class provision...

Last coach may be a mk1 brake composite? Though on closer inspection there is no hint of yellow.

I can only count 4 compartment windows, which means it can only be a BSK or possibly BFK (BCK and BSO had 5 compartments); but as you say, can't see any yellow stripe and it looks like there's 2 sets of 'luggage' doors which suggests a BSK to me...

When I asked Mark Hopwood about this (at a local commuter group meeting some time back) he said the new trains will offer the same level of catering as GWR's existing services.  Quite how they are going to do Pullman catering he did not explain.

Because they have a full kitchen behind the cab at the First class end.

Saw this and one other at Exeter prior to conversion, which I think was carried out at Laira

Here is another Barnstaple arrival at Exeter St Davids

post-7081-0-53671500-1479646639_thumb.jpg

33029 has arrived with the 07.10 service from Barnstaple formed of four mk1 coaches,

I think the GUV seen in the distance may have also arrived on the train and has been detached by the station pilot, 13/10/83

I like the pictures of the class 25s, and the coaching stock stabled in the siding at Paignton. The amount of siding space for coaching stock was massive. There were the two sets of sidings at Goodrington together with Paignton station itself, not to mention those at Newton Abbot!

7577 showing that it has worked the 03:00 To Barnstaple papers earlier in the day (16.6.73). It is running back wrong line to access the stabling point on a busy Summer Saturday.Between 1971 and 1980 45 different class 25s were allocated to Laira to cover duties previously carried out by Class 22s. If I remember correctly they departed almost as suddenly as they arrived.

Cowley Bridge has been in the news for the wrong reason over the past week due to flooding following heavy rain,

here are a couple of views from a drier time, in May 1982

post-7081-0-77914900-1480248050_thumb.jpg

HST set 253032 approaches Cowley Bridge with an unidentified service for the West Country.

In the background on the far side of the river is the Water Treatment Works, the problem here has been a build up of overspill water from the Exe further upstream getting trapped to the right of the line and then flooding across the tracks to get back into the river, 21/4/82

A closer view of the junction with the Cowley Bridge Inn on the right

post-7081-0-05510400-1480248142_thumb.jpg

50050 Fearless heads another unidentified working to the West Country, the Barnstaple line bridge can be seen on the left, 21/4/82

cheers

There are not very many photos about of the Class 25's in Devon, well certainly not in my collection! I only took this one because of the sheer novelty of seeing a loco renumbered for the first time. I still need to translate back to the old numbers to know exactly what I am looking at! Exeter stabling point (10.11.73) 5238, 25146 (5296) and 7675 all ready for work.

One of the very few other photos I took of class 25s in Devon was this instamatic photo of 25057 in 1979.

post-7081-0-20966200-1480492772.jpg

25057, on local freight trip duty, passes Exeter Middle Signal Box heading light diesel to Exeter Riverside Yard,

having just banked a coal train of loaded  21t coal hoppers for Exmouth Junction CCD up the bank to Exeter Central, 15/5/79

cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

70805 on the up 10.09 Moorswater Lafarge to Aberthaw Cement Works empties (15/12/16)  seen at Devonport. Unfortunately the light was too  poor so not very sharp, but an interesting location. The tunnel it is emerging from actually passes over another double track tunnel of the former Southern route out of Plymouth. .
