Fat Controller
Given that it is at platform 4 The tarpaulined wagon could have originated from Newcourt and is being tripped to Riverside. Very likely; the military were very keen on Pipes and Tubes (this wagon's an LNER-designed Tube with full drop sides) to carry things such as large,cryptically-labelled , packing cases. Rivercider
Interesting you quote the Newcourt turn. My second day as a Secondman (upgraded Traction Trainee) at Exeter 24/9/74 saw me booked on Turn 109 12.15 Riverside yard,7B71 Riverside to Newcourt also shunt Central yard then as said 15.58 to Barnstaple and 17.55 return with driver Bob Dak who I remember was very accomodating of this rookie. A further note off the information board in the movements supervisors office is...Engine then either left for Basingstoke or take to shed. We had 31110 that day. The traincrew shown for Exeter trip No.9 with effect from 5th May 1975 were turns Exeter 605, 109, 1642, 157. cheers
Tavy Man
These sort of photographs say it all for me. 36 years later and we've gone from a 5 coach local offering 1st and 2nd class accommodation and plenty of luggage and cycle space, to a 143 or a 150 if you are lucky. Ah well that's what they call progress isn't it...... Regards
Rivercider
Among the other class 31 photos I have taken at Exeter are two taken in the stabling point, Old Oak Common allocated 31121 stands within the walls of the former steam shed at Exeter St Davids, 5/11/81 31286 was also an Old Oak Common loco by this time, having previously been at Bath Road, and is standing outside the walls of the old steam shed, 5/11/81 cheers

Garry Morris
31 328 Goodrington yard. Secondman conducting the driver in reverse by the looks of it. Cheap 200mm with 3x converter! August 78.
Garry Morris
31 294 Dawlish Warren. June 1981. I note this one has snow ploughs like the earlier one at NA on Royal. Same one I wonder? I would guess that Devon was visited by every Bath Road allocated 31 but maybe not all the OOC ones. We have covered quite a few on here already? How many went to Bristol Bath Road?
Garry Morris
Mid afternoon Summer Saturday arrivals at Paignton 31210 and 31158 run round at Goodrington Yard. Not sure where they are allocated but I think it's a Liverpool to Paignton working. 5.6.78
Garry Morris
This is a sad reminder of a bygone time. 31131 Aller Junction 10.82. A vdown parcels working taking the Plymouth line. The gantry still looks majestic even though it has been stripped of some of it's signals.
Garry Morris
A personal favourite as mentioned earlier, it was the subject of my first Secondman turn. Here 31110 in Railfreight livery at Newton Abbot on the Down Relief. 12.85 on engineering build up moves. Obviously some serious re ballasting is due looking at those Sea Lions!

I expect you are right about the Bath Road locos all visiting Devon. I will use the 1979 Ian Allan Locoshed book as an example of the WR class 31 allocation, which was correct as of November 1978 Bath Road allocation:- 31135, 31145, 31154, 31158, 31165, 31170, 31210, 31258, 31294, 31401, 31414, 31416, 31419, 31420, 31421, 31422, 31423, 31424. Old Oak allocation:- 31117, 31118, 31121, 31124, 31131, 31132, 31136, 31163, 31209, 31213, 31230, 31231, 31241, 31254, 31256, 31257, 31260, 31265, 31273, 31286, 31296, 31304, 31412 , 31413, 31415. There were numerous transfers between BR and OC during the year as well as transfers in and out of the WR. By the way I think you have a typo for post 482 at Goodrington, 31327 was the highest numbered 31/1, cheers

Tavy Man
At City Basin Box you would have had pairs on the Bitumen trains from off region? I was there from 1981 to 1983 Garry. By that time the 02.38 Ellsmere Port was tripped to City Basin from Riverside in two parts by the trip pilot. The train engines came off at Riverside. Although I have known the trip workings to be 31 hauled if for some reason a pilot wasn't available. Regards

RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted February 4, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 4, 2017 I'm not a fan of Class 31s, but I did look out for OC allocated 31135 with the Hymek style yellow cab windows. Saw it at Reading on vans from the South West on several occasions but did anyone get a photo down that way?

Garry Morris
This is possibly the worst Class 31 misdemeanour in these parts. Not sure which loco.. An old newspaper clip from 1986. Garry Morris
The Blue Pullman, not blue! This set headed up by power car W60093 was an exhibit at Laira Open Day 26/9/70. KingJohn
The Blue Pullman, not blue! This set headed up by power car W60093 was an exhibit at Laira Open Day 26/9/70. There were other sets that visited for maintenance? Can anyone confirm this? Extract from Railcar.co.uk ( Former LMR set 60090 / 60730 / 60740 / 60741 / 60731 / 60091 worked from London to Plymouth on Christmas Eve 1970. It returned empty to Bristol, being piloted over the banks between Plymouth and Exeter by Western D1054. It was back in Plymouth a few days later on the 28th to work the return to London (Kensington), this time piloted as far as Exeter.)
Garry Morris
Two known pictures exist of Pullmans in Devon. One is by Bernard Mills of a Western towing one in snow somewhere between Plymouth and Totnes. The other is one unassisted on Dawlish sea wall published in Modern Railways. Both could relate to the two workings identified.
TEDDYBEAR D9521
Yes thats correct and the reason why they were assisted is because WR Management did'nt think the Blue Pullmans could handle the Devon banks and that's why the Western was provided. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted February 19, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2017 Yes thats correct and the reason why they were assisted is because WR Management did'nt think the Blue Pullmans could handle the Devon banks and that's why the Western was provided. And that is why a potential plan to use the Pullman sets on a Plymouth working (basically they would have worked 'The Golden Hind' according to what I was told) never took off.
