RMweb Premium Kris Posted June 3, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 3, 2018 Flipping ‘eck - really don’t like the airline type seating in that shot - and you’d be hard pressed to enjoy the views on your journey in that pair of seats on the right. The idea that travelling by train is an alternative to the car with comfort and the ability to enjoy the journey has been eroded to the point it almost counts for nothing. Cram em in, lowest common denominator ergonomics don’t do anything to encourage rail travel. I know, I know, it’s the DfT..but really ? Best regards Matt W Seating has been like that on the GWR HST's for a long time now. Personally I find it fine, particularly when I am travelling on my own. The leg room is fine (I'm 5'8") and there is space for me to work (just).
Garry Morris
5.6.18. On Laira today, electro diesel, IEP, Hitachi AT300 Class 800 series! 800 018 The New Order! Technically we should never see a class 800 this far west in service. We are to get the Class 802 which in laymans terms does not have derated engines and are potentially more powerful, they have beefier brakes and larger toilet retention tanks along with higher fuel capacity. This is to acknowledge that our line is further, steeper and more challenging than gliding along the Thames Valley. They look impressive and sprint out of Paddington under electric power but lack a buffet car, seats by windows, are noisier than HST in Second Class, have hard seats and only pick up 6 minutes on the schedule between Paddington and Newbury where they switch to diesel. Another downside is that with limited 9 car sets available there will be times when a 5 car set works a Westcountry service on it's own. Incidentally a double 5 set will require 7 staff to operate (there is a 1st class trolley and a 2nd class trolley in each set) A revenue collector in each set and one driver! The catering provision is a very severe downgrade for long distance travellers unless there is a no standing rule applied and the trolleys can actually move. Not sure about the range of hot food from a trolley...
RMweb Premium ba14eagle Posted June 6, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) Catering has been on the downgrade on the HST routes out of Paddington, the moment the franchise holder was allowed to remove the original catering vehicles from their sets, IMHO. It should never have been allowed What a shame Plymouth Airport closed - the introduction of these sets should see plenty of passengers - sorry, "customers" - look for an alternative method of transport from London to West Devon and Cornwall. Sad times. Edited June 6, 2018 by ba14eagle

brianusa
Hemerdon doesn't present much of a problem these days especially with shortened rakes. The only downside is that its all over in a matter of seconds whereas there was plenty of time to check names and numbers, etc, in the steam days of yore! Trees have grown a lot since then, too! Brian.

RMweb Gold bcnPete Posted October 26, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2018 Very nice, they bring back memories. Is the second one taken at Sheffield? cheers Thanks Kevin - no I think it was Exeter Central...could be wrong but I don’t remember being allowed to venture too far by my parents during spotting days - Sussex to London was about the limit!
