An unidentified Hymek crossing the River Taw at Barnstaple with a SO through train from Ilfracombe to Paddington.

Shame the line no longer exists

True enough, DCC have a few issues with the old GWR bridge down by Rock Park.

When I've walked the stretch of the Ilfracombe line in the Slade Valley thought how hard the engines, steam or diesel, would be working.  I bet a 63XX steam loco exhaust would have roared round the valley - and I bet then there Maybachs would've had the taps wide open too.  I know D800s and 7000s were common at Ilfracombe- the climb might have caused their D63xx MAN engined contemporary diesels to chuck in the towel !  Not sure I've seen a picture of one at Ilfracombe though they were common on the milk from Torrington and clay from Meeth.

There is at least one photo of a D63XX at Ilfracombe online somewhere.

I have very few memories of the line, just before it closed, and can only recall Warships Hymeks and DMUs.

'The Ilfracombe Line' by John Nicholas mentions that in May/June 1963 North British type 2s and cross-country DMUs arrived for clearance tests. In summer 1964 D63XX and Hymeks took over the steam duties on the route, but from September that year most services were worked by DMUs.  Freight traffic to Ilfracombe also ceased in September 1964, a duty which would have been worked by the class. The summer Saturday Paddington services were too heavy for a single D63XX. He also mentions that 6344 was seen on the route.

I have an idea that I've seen a photo of 33's working to Ilfracombe. Must see if I can dig the photo up.

A couple of weeks ago I went through my Dad's slide collection knowing that there were at least a few railway related ones in there from the mid 1980's - we were surprised to find quite a few such slides that had been kindly gifted to me by a friend of my Dad's that we'd both forgotten about and unfortunately cannot remember the name of the person either - they shall be credited if that information ever comes to light! Rather than let them sit unseen in a box any longer I've started sharing them online for all to enjoy. Here's some of the first to be scanned, showing some Devon Diesels:

45012 runs past Newton Abbot west signal box and enters the station with 1M86 1000 Paignton - Liverpool Lime Street, 18th August 1984.

'Sir Edward Elgar', 50007 is seen at Exeter St. Davids with 1M08 0924 Paignton - Birmingham New Street, 04th August 1984.

33017 enters Exeter St Davids from the East, 04th August 1984 - no service info available but possibly ex-Barnstaple?

All the best,

Ross.

Just a few more from this collection, in particular ones that I find especially interesting/unusual:

50002 'Superb' runs into Exeter St. Davids from the West with an unusual consist - it's been suggested that this is most likely an MOD working, which I'd agree with given the items in the load, 20/05/1984:

50002 at a changing Exeter St. Davids

The 'infamous' appearance of a Class 58 at North Road - 58002 & the failed HST set that ended up pushing a failed 58002 into Plymouth, 01/09/1984:

A Broken Bone at North Road

Tank freight on Lipson Curve - 47076 'City of Truro' hauls a rake of what I think are oil and cement tanks which I'm guessing would have most likely been from Cattedown and Plymstock cement works? Sometime in June 1984:

All the best,

Ross.

While we were offline, there was a special from Paddington on 26/03/2022 headed by the GBRf 50s. Ran double headed to Paignton, then top&tail to Okehampton, returned to Exeter then back to Paddington double headed. I missed the down run, but caught them while cycling at Eastdon (just north of Dawlish Warren) when they were top&tailed towards Okehampton. Would have been interesting hearing them head uphill to Okehampton!

A 35mm slide I purchased from that well known online auction site that caught my interest as soon as I saw it - someday during August 1978 a rather filthy pre-refurbished 50007 'Hercules' with a mixed freight at Tothill Park, Plymouth, with what's suspected to be the 7B64 12.55 Friary - Exeter Riverside goods:

I bet it made a wonderful sound!

I've just found this thread, hidden away in the 'Special interests - UK prototype' section.

I spent several happy summer holidays in the 1970s with a 'Western rail rover'-type ticket and have lots of pictures taken in Devon. Some of these have already been shared in the 'Diesel Hydraulic Group' section (under my 'Trev's Western wanderings' thread) in 2017.
