When I've walked the stretch of the Ilfracombe line in the Slade Valley thought how hard the engines, steam or diesel, would be working. I bet a 63XX steam loco exhaust would have roared round the valley - and I bet then there Maybachs would've had the taps wide open too. I know D800s and 7000s were common at Ilfracombe- the climb might have caused their D63xx MAN engined contemporary diesels to chuck in the towel ! Freight traffic to Ilfracombe also ceased in September 1964, a duty which would have been worked by the class. The summer Saturday Paddington services were too heavy for a single D63XX. Rather than let them sit unseen in a box any longer I've started sharing them online for all to enjoy. Here's some of the first to be scanned, showing some Devon Diesels: 45012 runs past Newton Abbot west signal box and enters the station with 1M86 1000 Paignton - Liverpool Lime Street, 18th August 1984. 'Sir Edward Elgar', 50007 is seen at Exeter St. Davids with 1M08 0924 Paignton - Birmingham New Street, 04th August 1984. 33017 enters Exeter St Davids from the East, 04th August 1984 - no service info available but possibly ex-Barnstaple? RMweb Premium alexross42 Posted February 10, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 10, 2022 Just a few more from this collection, in particular ones that I find especially interesting/unusual: 50002 'Superb' runs into Exeter St. Davids from the West with an unusual consist - it's been suggested that this is most likely an MOD working, which I'd agree with given the items in the load, 20/05/1984: The 'infamous' appearance of a Class 58 at North Road - 58002 & the failed HST set that ended up pushing a failed 58002 into Plymouth, 01/09/1984: Tank freight on Lipson Curve - 47076 'City of Truro' hauls a rake of what I think are oil and cement tanks which I'm guessing would have most likely been from Cattedown and Plymstock cement works? Ran double headed to Paignton, then top&tail to Okehampton, returned to Exeter then back to Paddington double headed. I missed the down run, but caught them while cycling at Eastdon (just north of Dawlish Warren) when they were top&tailed towards Okehampton. I spent several happy summer holidays in the 1970s with a 'Western rail rover'-type ticket and have lots of pictures taken in Devon. Some of these have already been shared in the 'Diesel Hydraulic Group' section (under my 'Trev's Western wanderings' thread) in 2017.
