steve howe
Exciting line-up planned for Model Railway Exhibition Helston and Falmouth Model Railway Club have an exciting line-up of layouts planned for their 2015 exhibition, which will be held at Helston’s Old Cattle Market Centre on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April . Almost all of the twelve layouts in the exhibition will be new to the area. They include Cheddar, an evocation of the much-loved Somerset and Dorset Railway set in the 1920s and Corris, a Welsh narrow-gauge railway from the 1930s. No Cornish model railway show would be complete without at least one Great Western branch line and this show has no less than three, each of them a refreshingly new ‘take’ on this popular theme, including Shepherds & Treamble, and Lower Rose Goods as featured in these forums. The Club’s latest project will also be making its exhibition debut. Cirencester General is an imaginary but plausible confluence of cross-country lines set in the Cotswolds in the late 1950s and offering plenty of action with Midland, Western and Southern passenger and freight trains. Other unusual exhibits include a demonstration of how a signaller's lever frame can be built for a model railway, with signals and turnouts interlocked, just like the real thing. Historic and modern, 0, 00, P4 and N gauge, painstakingly accurate or just for fun, there will be plenty to see and, perhaps, inspiration to get that old train set down from the attic to see if it still works! Eight trade stands will be offering tempting bargains, unusual accessories and opportunities to stock up on those essential tools and supplies. The Old Cattle Market Centre is just off the Porthleven road, with free parking. The modern venue has easy access for wheelchairs and is within walking distance of Helston town centre. valleymodeller
Great news. I was thinking of seeing my family in Helston, so I may now travel down that weekend. very convenient indeed. Last year I stayed in a B&B about 50 yards from the Cattle Centre, and just a short walk from the Blue Anchor!

Last year I stayed in a B&B about 50 yards from the Cattle Centre, and just a short walk from the Blue Anchor! Ah yes, the Blue Anchor...... If you feel the bottom's fallen out of your world..... Drink Blue Anchor Spingo, and feel the world fall out of your bottom..... Do come and say hello, Stubby and me will be the two comatose bodies under adjacent layouts. valleymodeller
Spingo is my favourite, but I avoid the really strong one. Be great to combine a trip down from Wales with a show.

Penlan
I've missed this in previous years (two ?) at the cattle market Helston, it seems a nice, light and airy venue. Catering nearby in a Cafe. Across the road from the Cattle Market (opposite Lidl's) was Helston Gas Works - the coal was brought across Helston by horse & Cart, later lorries from the GWR station to the gas works. The free car park was busy as it also provided the parking for the Park&Ride shuttle service to Porthleven Food & Music Festival. There was pay & Display by the Cattle Market and although the meter had a black bag over it, there where plenty of signs up about ringing a number to pay etc., - I hate those and it takes forever. I thought the show was a good local show. And a chance to talk to Stubby again after I've been out of modelling for a year or two. Yes, it will be in my diary for next year.
