Back in Switzerland again this evening, at Arth Goldau station in the summer of 1988.  At that time there was a hotel (Hotel Terminus Steiner) just down the road from the station, the rooms had good views of the trains.

Hi, Dave. Great to see more of Arth Goldau. The first photo', C10193, is an excellent portrait of loco' Ae 6/6 11420 Appenzell AR. Then in C9630, there is an excellent view of the imposing station buildings.

Visits to a couple more Swiss Private Railways this evening.

 

The first one is a train on the Martigny Orsieres railway . This line owes its existence to the British Aluminium Company who built a line to their factory in Orsieres, in the south west of Switzerland. It opened in 1910.  There is also a branch from Sembrancher to Le Chable, opened in 1953.  It is standard gauge, nowadays electrified at 15KV AC.

This evenings other line is the Nyon St Cergue Morez.  This metre gauge line was opened from Nyon to St Cergue in 1916 and La Cure in 1917, finally reaching Morez in 1921.  It is unusual as it was an international line until 1958, as Morez is in France, the rest of the line is in Switzerland.  The line across the border was closed in 1958, it now terminates at the frontier in La Cure.

At the time iof my visit the line was still operated using very old railcars, dating from 1916 - 1924, with one more modern one built in 1936.  Electrification is at 2200 V DC.

The photos were all taken within a few minutes of each other.  We were driving along the road alongside the line when we saw the trains, so a hurried stop was made.  Annoyingly after driving on after taking the photos I realised I had left my sunglasses on the roof of the car. Needless to say they had blown away by the time I stopped.

 

More recently the line has been modernised with new stock.

Hi, Dave. Fascinating Swiss railways here. The first one, in photo' J6283 at Bouvernier MO (Orsieres to Martigny), is a lovely atmospheric shot, and a good portrait of ABDe 4/4 & Bt. The next photo's of La Givrine NStCM (La Cure to Nyon) are great. The railcars are delightful, and I especially like number 1 on the Inspection Train. The last two photo's C4068 and J6305 show number 11 and it's trailer using the loop line with good detail of the railcar and trailer.

Hi, Dave. I like the photo's of Denmark, they really are capturing the feel of the place very well indeed. In particular, I think that C17832 is nice and atmospheric - one of those photo's that shows a train running through the countryside so well.

Another visit to Denmark today.  

 

In case anyone wonders how I select photos for this thread it's really very simple.  As I caption and do any colour etc corrections on photos I put them in folders by country.  Then I set up folders containing images to be posted up to about a week ahead.   Sometimes this means that photos from one country will come up quite often.  This is most likely in the case of Switzerland as I have several thousand photos taken there.

A few days ago I mentioned the very sharp curve at the end of the station in Gais.  Today we have a few photos of trains negotiating it.  The line actually turns through 180 degrees- just like a model railway at one end of an oval.

 

The weather in Switzerland can be very wet at times.

 

It is metre gauge but they are trains, not trams.  The power cars are each about 17.5m long, just to give some idea of the curve.

The radius of that curve is 35 m. (just under 120ft) So in just 70 m it turns 170 degrees. It's not the smallest radius curve, the Basel tramway has curves of just 12 m. (40 ft). The entire Gais station, including the depot across from the station, takes up less then 290x120 meters.

 

 

Thanks very much for the information - I hoped someone would know the radius.    An HOm model of Gais would fit nicely in my spare room - it's perhaps as well the room already has a Swiss n gauge layout and a very small 0 gauge layout in it or I'd be very tempted to use the track plan for something with Bemo stock.

I didn't, but Google Earth has a ruler that does ;)

 

Anyway, the sidings at the station are 40-50 meters long, sharp points too. For the curved one, a Peco point is too large ( :O ) so use the Bemo kit instead. However, do the following:

1) open kit

2) take out sleeper section

3) throw the poor excuse of sleepers in the bin :rolleyes:

 

Bemo standard track (code 80) is prone to malformation in time as the plastic contains a component that cannot stand the test of time. Replace with (real) wooden and/or copperclad PCB sleepers in the correct radius. Mind, if you smuggle a little by using a smaller radius (say 33 or 38 cm instead of the correct 40 cm) the entire station, including depot across the stream. will fit on 4' wide boards.

 

Stock is a bit of a problem, AFAIK there are no models for the Appenzeller nor SGA railways. You may get away with some RhB Bernina stock, repainted and re-bodied even, but if there is a model, it's brass, Swiss, sold out and thus prohibitively expensive :yes: Your best bet is probably Bühler (IIRC in Zürich) but if I'm not mistaken he either closed his shop, sold up or may not have what you're after. Never used him though.

I'm afraid it will have to remain a pipe dream, though at one time I did have a small Bemo layout which got sold when I had to economise a bit on my retirement.  Amongst the bits and pieces was an Appenzeller Bahn coach from one of the smaller HOm manufacturers, but I can't remember which firm.

Back to France in 1967 again with some photos at Calais and one more from Carling of a coal industry loco.  As usual photos were taken of anything to do with the railway, not just locomotives.

This is the only photo of a 231G which has survived.  I remember that Dad had problems with his camera at the end of this holiday, there were other photos but he didn't keep them - i.e. after they were looked at and noted in his index he threw them out as they were very overexposed.

Western Switzerland in August 1978 this evening.  

 

At the time these were taken I was having a holiday in France with fmily and friends, in a gite in Les Gets and had gone back to Switzerland for the day, ending up just south of Montreux, on the banks of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva).  e spent sometime watching the rains go buy and also visited the Chateau which gives good views of trains on the main line from Geneva to Chur and through the Simplon tunnel to Italy.

 

Byron visited Chateau Chillon in 1816 and wrote his poem "The Prisoner of Chillon Castle".  He also scratched his name on the wall.

The RBe4/4 power cars dating from the araly 1960s have a continuous power rating of 2030kW.  A British Class 47 has a diesel engine of somewhat less power, about 1920kW (2580hp).  The RBe4/4s were usually used on local trains and of course could carry passengers.  They were only used to express trains in the case of a loco failure

Belgium again tonight, around Drongen.  Drongen is on the eastern edge of Gent (Ghent).  The railway runs from Ostende and Zeebrugge through Drongen and Gent to Brussels.

 

We spent the night in a motel near Drongen just by the Motorway.  My main memory of it is the restaurant which served very good food, you could choose your trout from the fish tank in the restaurant.

That's not a dead bird stain in front of the number of 5185, it's a dot. Used to indicate the presence of a steam kettle, some trains still needed steam for heating.

I think you'll find that it's the exact opposite!  The dot prefix to the number indicates the removal of the steam heating boiler, effectively assigning the locomotive to freight duties.  I'm not sure exactly when, but it appears to have been introduced during the mid- to late-1980s and was given to examples of classes 51, 52, 53, 55 and 62 in service at that time.

 

I like the shot of the class 23 in "reversed" blue/yellow livery - I'm trying to find/remember whether I saw any of the class so painted (instead of the earlier green and more common blue/yellow styles).

A visit to Austria this evening.

 

Feldkirch is in the west of Austria, very close to the Swiss border.  To the east lies the route over the Arlberg to the rest of Austria.  To the north there is a connection to Germany via Bregenz, to the west trains run through Liechtenstein to Switzerland.

Those pics of Austria bring back great memories, thanks for sharing Dave.

 

I also visited in 1990 and there were still a few of the old 1020s working local passenger and freights. Ian Futers layout 'Altausee' really got me interested in the OBB.

Something of a mix of Swiss places today.

 

The first three are from St Gallen.  St Gallen seems to be considered to be a boring place by many Swiss but it has some nice trains to look at.

 

 

The first image is of a Trogener Bahn train, which runs along side the road from St Gallen to Trogen.  In St Gallen there are some interesting bits of overhead where the TB crosses the local trolleybus routes.
