On the Rhätische Bahn in Switzerland, still in 1988, for this evening.

Most of the photos were taken at Samedan, one is from the train on the journey there.

I've just put three somewhat unusual photos of a Furka Oberalp loco working on the RhB in another thread, so I thought I'd ad them here.

In 1992 the RhB were short of motive power and hired a loco from the FO.

I was fortunate enough to see it on two days while I was in the area in July 1992.  I say fortunate as I had no idea it was there.

Today we are travelling on a train of the RhB heading north from Preda towards Filisur with views taken from the carriage windows.   The windows dropped right down and the train wasn't busy so no one complained about draughts.

Some photos taken at Gurtnellen for today.

Gurtnellen is on the north ramp of the Gotthard,to the north of Wassen.

The photos were taken a year after the summer floods of 1987 so repair work was still going on and there is a lot of newly exposed rock visible.  As you can see the weather was very dull.

Single line working was in force to the south of the station as the flood damage required extensive repairs to the trackbed.

Loco 10101 and its sisters (series 10101-10104) were prototype loco's for the later BR460 series. As they were a small series within the large SBB fleet and therefore (relatively) expensive to maintain, they were sold to the SOB, who still uses them (IIRC!). Their body shape resembles that of contemporary Norwegian loco's, the NSB El17. SBB branded these loco's as "Lok 2000", which title later transferred to the BR460. Roco made H0 models at the time (of the SBB loco, the NSB El17 is currently available from NMJ) but these have been dropped in later years, I don't think the SOB version was released by Roco, or at least not outside Switzerland.

Roco also released models (again in H0 scale) of the BLS Re 4/4 and Ae 6/8, while I've seen a model of the Ae 8/8 described in a magazine, but that's probably a conversion by a modeller.

Roco did the 10101-4 series in n gauge in the original liveries as well as the SOB red and 1 (possibly 2) of the SOB advertising liveries.  I know of the Telekom white and I think there was one in blue for a shopping centre.

In n gauge the BLS Re4/4 was made by Arnold, the Ae6/8 by Fulgurex and the Ae8/8 by Hobbytrain.

Some photos taken south of ArthGoldau, high on the hill behind me is Steinerberg.

The first three are trains to and from the Gotthard.

The last two are trains climbing up the 1 in 20 gradienton the SOB (Südostbahn) from Arth Goldau to Steinerberg and beyond.

Tonight's photos are by the Rhine in Germany.

They are captioned as being taken at the Loreley, they are all taken from the east bank, or on top of the cliffs, very close to the place.

The Loreley rock, another great place to just watch things go by, in this case busy with as many boats as trains.

Cheeky request - any shots from Italy in the pipeline? In particular the coastal routes out from Genova?

Sorry to disappoint you.

I've only got about 5 photos taken in Italy, somewhere near Aosta.

One day while I was staying at ArthGoldau in 1988 I decided it would be nice to have a trip to the summit of the Rigi, using the Arth Rigi Bahn from ArthGoldau station.  The station was on a bridge over the line to Luzern.  The terminus at the summit was shared with the Vitznau Rigi Bahn.  Nowadays both are part of the Rigi Bahnen, along with the cable car to the summit.

In the distance the line can be seen heading south towards the Gotthard.  At the bottom of the image is the line to Luzern, to the left is the line to Zürich.

The Sudostbahn line to Rapperswil and beyond is not really visible, it is towards the upper edge of the trees on the left as it climbs at 1 in 20.
