Huttwil and Wolhusen today in 1988.

 

Wolhusen is on the line from Luzern to Bern and is the junction with the SBB.  Hutwill, also on the VHB, is a junction for lines to Wolhusen, Ramsei and Langenthal.

 

A note about the railways - the EBT is the Emmental Burgdorf Thun Bahn, the VHB is the Vereinigte Huttwil Bahn, there is also the SMB, the Solothurn Münster Bahn, all under the same management in 1988.

A visit to the station at the Swiss town of Langenthal today.  Langenthal is on the line from Olten to Bern.  The newly built line from Mattstetten to Rothrist bypasses the town.  This been built since these photos were taken.

The second Re4/4ii appears to be in two-tone brown - I don't think I've sen that livery before.

 

 

TEE Livery for the Re4/4ii ?

It's the TEE livery, well worn and rather dirty.    The SBB does not repaint it's locos as often as some other companies.

That was the nearest scheme I could think of - but I never thought the Swiss would let a "prestige" (in terms of its livery) loco get into such a disgusting state!  (Swiss locos depots generally being paragons of cleanliness).

Back to Switzerland in 1988 today with photos at Niederbipp and Oensingen.

 

Niederbipp is between Solothurn and Olten.  Oensingen is the next station east of Niederbipp.

 

Oensingen is the junction for the Oensingen Balsthal Bahn (OeBB) which has an interesting collection of elderly stock in daily use. I understand the stock has changed somewhat since I was there, but is still old.

Germany today. Actually as it is 1967 I suppose it should be West Germany.

 

We are at Saarbrücken in August 1967 when there was still plenty of DB steam as well as electrics and diesels to see.

Lovely photos again, Dave.  Saarbrücken kept an allocation of 23s and 50s until quite late into the 'seventies. It holds particular memories as being the place where I last saw "proper" working steam in West Germany (middle of the night, peering out from the top bunk of a couchette on to a 23).

Today we have a few photos from Rüti, the one in Canton Zürich, hence the station nameboards.

 

I happened to be there during the rebuilding of the station for the Zürich S bahn services.  After I'd been photographing for about ten minutes the stationmaster appeared and asked me what I was doing.  As soon as I explained that I was from England and was a railway enthusiast he was perfectly happy for me to continue.  Apparently a few days previously he'd had a journalist turn up who took some photos which had been used in a less than complimentary piece in the newspapers.

I know that the BAM (Biere Apples Morge) does not usually run in the area, their railcar was present and working as a part of the Brünig 100th anniversary celebrations.

Some from Interlaken Ost today during the 100 anniversary celebrations for the Brunig line, with an MOB loco and one from the BVZ.

 

Obviously the MOB loco could not run under power as it is a DC machine.  During the celebrations a short piece of track was isolated and a generator used to supply power to allow it to move, but not on the day I was there.

I think it did move, but cannot now be certain.  At the time the various Swiss magazines published quite a lot about the event,  but in the end they had to go as I like to be able to walk around in my house!

 

While I was in Switzerland I generally allowed myself an average of 3x36 exposure slide films a day so there are a lot of photos.

No, the BVZ (and FO/RhB) do NOT have the same voltage as the SBB! :nono: SBB ran their only NG line at the same voltage as the rest of their SG network at 15kV AC, while the RhB/FO/BVZ network operates with 11kV AC. When the LSE joined the Brünig line in 1964, it had to convert from DC to 15kV AC. Today they are the ZB, still operating at that 15kV system :yes:

 

What may have caused the confusion is the HGe 4/4 series. SLM built 5 prototypes, 3 went straight to the FO and 2 were configured for the SBB Brünig. When the series was build, it was decided that the SBB would get all new loco's while the 2 SBB prototypes were gutted (and those parts reused in the SBB series) and the bodies were to become FO104 and 105 (which they did) with new FO-suitable innards. SBB has 8 loco's, the FO got 3 more (also, totalling 8 including the 5 prototypes) and the BVZ got 5 from the series. Total 21 units. Not bad, considering the highly specialist nature of the job ;)

Definitely a senior moment.

I mistook one HV AC for another HV AC even when it's different! :nono:

Interestingly, the reverse is actually true! In order to service the large works at Domat-Ems (Ems-Werke, large chemical plant IIRC) the SBB runs their freights beyond the end of the SG line in Chur through the Rhine valley on a 3-rail track from Chur to Domat-Ems, where the SG diverges from the double tracked RhB line (the double track ending at Reichenau, a few miles beyond). This section is powered with the standard RhB 11kV AC line and there has been considerable photographic evidence of SBB loco's actually running on that 11kV. Even a German ICE has been test-run on the line. :O

We had a similar occurence in the UK when some early AC lines were energised at 6.25kV rather than 25kV and AFAIK some trains operated on both before they were all standardised at 25kV.

Back to Interlaken Ost in Swizerland, 1988 again today.  This time we are looking at some standard gauge trains.  As well as being the 100th anniversary of the Brünig line it was also the 75th anniversay of the BLS, so once again there were some interesting things to see.

 

A very intensive service was being worked between Interlaken Ost and West as well as numerous specials from further afield over the weekend.
