A few of Dave F's European Railway Photos updated 16th January 2018

It didn't  Well, not that one :P

This is the last survivor of a series of 5 panoramic trains, 2 electric ones and 3 diesel-hydraulic versions, ordered by DRG in the 1930's. One of the electrics didn't survive the war (dunno what happened to the diesels, but I assume they've got destroyed too) and this one survived in West-Germany.

One diesel was destroyed in the war and the other two survived in DB use until 1960 (VT 90 500) and 1962 (VT 90 501).

Those who are following this thread will be able to work out my itinerary while I was in Switzerland in 1988.

Today's photos are from Küssnacht am Rigi, on the line from Immensee to Luzern which at the time was very busy, being used by many of the trains heading south from Luzern over the Gotthard as well as the Südostbahn trains to Rapperswil and beyond.  Some of the photos may be useful to modellers.

Still in Switzerland in 1988, this time at Immensee.

Immensee, to the north west of Arth Goldau is the junction where the line to Luzern via Küssnacht am Rigi leaves the line to Rotkreuz.

Some photos from a journey along the FO from Andermatt towards Disentis today.

The first one is a bit like Mike's view from yesterday above Andermatt, but mine was higher up the incline.  It also shows how much better modern cameras are than slide film with it's grain.

As the train approached the top of the pass at Oberalppasshöhe the weather closed in, as so often happens.  At least this time it didn't snow - once I arrived there in August to be greeted by a heavy snow storm and a crowded cafe full of people in summer clothes trying to get warm.

Out Furka Oberalp train from Andermatt has now arrived at Disentis, the end on junction with the RhB.  There is plenty time to take photos before catching a RhB stopping train to Chur.

Back to Switzerland in 1988 today.

We leave Disentis on a RhB train bound for Chur, taking photos from the train along the route down into the Rhine Gorge.

There are few roads around here, I've driven on a number of them and some are "interesting".  If you look on Google Earth and find Bonaduz you can head west along the Versammerstrasse.  Parts of it are two cars wide.  In many places there are some long drops to the valley below with only a crash barrier in the way.  There are some very good views of the railway a long way down in the valley, but I don't think I'd do the drive again.

You can also see the village of Versam with the long road down into the valley to Versam station (actually Versam Safien).  I'm sure that when I last drove to the station much of the road was still gravel, now it can be seen to be tarmaced.  In places it was very rough, on leaving I found I could no longer engage reverse gear.  When I got to a garage in Chur it was found that a small plastic clip had come loose while travelling over the rough surface and had partly jammed the gear linkage.

This is all that is left of the line. AFAIK it was abandonded not long after the tunnel cut-off line was built, avoiding the flat crossings.

Sternmattstrasse level crossing:

https://goo.gl/maps/9WoMq

Eichwaldstrasse crossing:

https://goo.gl/maps/ixAyG

Curious how the O/H was left in situ!

Keith

I am guilty of posting mis-information again!

(A few weeks back whilst Dave was around Luzern)

Although when the new double track tunnel was built all the track on the original route which had been dual gauge was removed a second rail was put on the western most track of the new route.

Here's where the old and new routes diverge:

https://goo.gl/maps/PLQppxMFJek

And further south toward Horw where the metre and standard gauge split:

Keith,

Thanks very much,

I'd wondered how it looks now. I never thought to look on Google Earth.
