I like the apparent randomness of the rolling stock formations on the Appenzeller pics. Just throw a couple of carriages on, higgledy-piggledy, luggage van in the middle, all different sizes.

Photos taken in the summer of 1988 in Switzerland today.

 

They show Arth Goldau, where the lines from Luzern, Zurich and through Rotkreuz meet and then head south to the Gotthard.  

 

This batch were taken on the day I arrived in Switzerland for my 1988 holiday, armed with a Swiss Pass, timetable book and a number of index cards with trips I'd worked out over the previous few weeks at home written on them - in the event most of them worked out well.  That year I stayed in a hotel right by the station (sadly it closed a few years later).

Nice blog. Looked at all the pages - couldn't see the Centovalli train. This is a tram like light railway going from Domodossola in Italy to Locarno in Switzerland. And it is called centovalli as it goes through or crosses 100 valleys... I wanted to check that - but I lost count....

I had the misfortune to travel on the Centovalli in the 1990s

 

Misfortune because I couldn't see a thing!

I had booked a round trip Stresa-Domodossola-Locarno-Stresa whilst on holiday on Maggiore but wasn't informed just how packed it can get.

When we (me & missus) got off the mainline train in Domodossola with a 10 min transfer time little did we know that everybody else had been sitting on the tram for some time and we were the last to get there.

We had a job even finding two seats together on the inside of vehicle and the only view was over other peoples heads.

I understand the views can be quite spectacular but only have other peoples word for it.

It was IMHO a wasted trip. Maybe I should have asked for my money back as the trip was sold "for it's spectacular scenery" which we never saw.

 

Moral is: if you want to do the trip make sure you get there very early and sit on the right. (left if going Locarno - Domodossola)

Until 1990 the Centovalli (FART) formed part of Locarno's small tram network, running through the streets but after then ran a more direct route by tunnel to Locarno Hbf

Well - I was a bit unfair. I lived in Italy for 11 years - from 1999 to 2010 - and not too far away either (Casatenovo, approximately 30 km north of Milan). Therefore I could take a day off when the weather was nice and I used a Wednesday - so not too many people on the train. And I went to Domodossola by car which took me from Casatenovo approximately 1.5 hours. The reason was a double one - not only to look at Centovalli - but I wanted also to study the system change from the Swiss 15kV 16 2/3 Hz system to the Italian 3kV DC system as I was modelling at this time San Giorgio / St. Georg, a fictitious Border station between Austria and Italy. The line from Switzerland is 15kV until it reaches the station of Domodossola. Only there is the system change - approximately 20km from the Swiss border.

I looked at my digital photos - and I have to say that I did not make not enough railway related pictures during the time I was living there.

Igls is the terminus of a tram route from Innsbruck.  There is a reversing loop at the station.

The Achensee Bahn is a metre gauge rack railway which runs from Jenbach to Seespitz on the Achensee.

Back to Switzerland in 1988 today.

 

After arriving at Zürich Airport I travelled by train to Arth Goldau.  

 

The first three photos were taken from the train on the journey.  The two at ArthGoldau station were taken after I had checked in at the hotel and decided to take some photos at the station.  As all the Gotthard traffic together with stoppers from Luzern and Zürich plus the Südostbahn use the station it is very busy.

Yesterday I said that in due course you would find out where I was going to on the train from Arth Goldau.

 

I'm afraid you are going to have to wait a few days before you find out because today we are returning to Austria.

 

There is one more photo at Jenbach, then we move to Wald am Arlberg, not far to the west of the summit of the Arlberg route and the Arlberg tunnel..

 

Wald am Arlberg is a very nice quiet country station where you can simply sit and watch the trains go by.

A few days ago I said I'd post photos of where I went after I left ArthGoldau on my first full day in Switzerland in 1988.

 

As the Gotthard lay to the south that seemed like a good line to sample first.  I realised it would take more than one day to see it properly so decided to do it in stages.

 

I caught a stopping train (all the stations still had a regular service then), passed through several stations, including Flüelen and got off at Erstfeld where the climb really starts.  Erstfeld also has a loco depot and engine changes took place there, sometimes to add an extra loco to freights.

The SBB produced a handy free booklet of loco classes and numbers, it also gave details of which trains were rostered for stock from which you could get a driver's eye view without actually going into the cab.

 

I spent some time at Erstfeld, both at the station and a short walk to the south.

A wonderful trip down memory lane with the 1980s shots of Switzerland. When locos and coaches were still green, and the most modern electric was an Re6/6.

The Erstfeld pictures really hit the spot. When Swiss railways were not overrun by locomotives from other countries or private operators. And as for that train of Schlieren coaches.... lovely!

Today we head south from Erstfeld climbing all the time on the Gotthard line.

 

We pass several small stations, which will feature later.  Today we have a photo of Intschi, a small halt and Wassen, where the trains can be seen on three levels from the village.
