RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 4, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 4, 2016 Heading back north up the side ramp of the Gotthard we encounter tunnels and spirals before arriving at Airolo, right by the southern entrance to the Gotthard Tunnel (that is the original one not the new one). The first three are taken from the train, sadly I didn't manage to arrange for another train to be in the photos. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 6, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 6, 2016 (edited) You tease! When I was staying at Arth Goldau that summer (1988) there was (almost) always an Ae3/6i in a loop at around 8 a.m. - but I didn't always photograph it as sometimes I caught early trains - breakfast was available at the hotel from around 6.30 a.m. The ones below I photographed. 30th July it was an Ae3/6ii museumlok 10439 in brown 5th August Ae3/6i 10679 (also saw 10691 at Luzern around noon). 9th August Ae3/6i 10685 16th August Ae3/6i 10694 also 19th August Ae3/6i 10650 at Zürich Oerlikon In 1989 at Arth Goldau: 26th July Ae3/6i 10679 27th July Ae3/6i 10685 31st July Ae3/6i 10685 3rd August Ae3/6i 10684 14th August Ae3/6i 10685 In 1988 and 1989 I photographed Ae3/6i's about 20 times at various locations. eastwestdivide
That plinthed loco at Buchs was still there in 2014. Minor typo in Feldkirch. Had to look up that 4030 unit to see how old they were - 50s design at its finest.

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 9, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 9, 2016 Those of you who look at the dates of the images will realise that we are roughly following my itinerary from 1988. Today we are at Rorschach Hafen, on the Bodensee (Lake Constance). When the lake is high the railway floods, as I have mentioned elsewhere there are photos in books of electric locos running when the track is covered by water. Fortunately each time I have been there is has been dry and warm (or hot!). RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 10, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 10, 2016 Today's photos were taken at Gossau in the north east of Switzerland, quite near St Gallen. It is at the northern terminus of the Appenzeller Bahn (now Appenzeller Bahnen following various mergers) line from Appenzell. It has a population of around 18,000. It is not a tourist hotspot, just a small Swiss town. In the captions AB refers to Appenzeller Bahn. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 12, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2016 A detour to France today. Back in 1967 I had been there to stay with friends, this 1990 visit was just for a part of a day to have a quick look at the place. The station hadn't changed much.
