Heading back north up the side ramp of the Gotthard we encounter tunnels and spirals before arriving at Airolo, right by the southern entrance to the Gotthard Tunnel (that is the original one not the new one).

The first three are taken from the train, sadly I didn't manage to arrange for another train to be in the photos.

The Gotthard autobahn is on the right in the first two photos, one of its tunnels is in the distance in the third photo.

You tease!

When I was staying at Arth Goldau that summer (1988) there was (almost) always an Ae3/6i in a loop at around 8 a.m. - but I didn't always photograph it as sometimes I caught early trains - breakfast was available at the hotel from around 6.30 a.m.

The ones below I photographed.

30th July it was an Ae3/6ii museumlok 10439 in brown

5th August Ae3/6i 10679 (also saw 10691 at Luzern around noon).

9th August Ae3/6i 10685

16th August Ae3/6i 10694

also 19th August Ae3/6i 10650 at Zürich Oerlikon

In 1989 at Arth Goldau:

26th July Ae3/6i 10679

27th July Ae3/6i 10685

31st July Ae3/6i 10685

3rd August Ae3/6i 10684

14th August Ae3/6i 10685

In 1988 and 1989 I photographed Ae3/6i's about 20 times at various locations.

Nice to see some OBB pics again. Thanks for sharing.

I've just started to sort out some Austrian photos for later on - i.e. when I find time to colour correct etc and caption them..

Those of you who look at the dates of the images will realise that we are roughly following my itinerary from 1988.

Today we are at Rorschach Hafen, on the Bodensee (Lake Constance).  When the lake is high the railway floods, as I have mentioned elsewhere there are photos in books of electric locos running when the track is covered by water.

Fortunately each time I have been there is has been dry and warm (or hot!).

Today's photos were taken at Gossau in the north east of Switzerland, quite near St Gallen.  It is at the northern terminus of the Appenzeller Bahn (now Appenzeller Bahnen following various mergers) line from Appenzell.

It has a population of around 18,000.  It is not a tourist hotspot, just a small Swiss town.

In the captions AB refers to Appenzeller Bahn.

From Gossau I caught an Appenzeller Bahn metre gauge train to Herisau where the station also has trains of the standard gauge Bodensee Toggenburg Bahn (now part of the Südostbahn).  SBB trains also use the station.

A detour to France today.  Back in 1967 I had been there to stay with friends, this 1990 visit was just for a part of a day to have a quick look at the place.  The station hadn't changed much.  By then the friends had all moved, the one member of the family I keep in touch with now lives in Toulon.

St Avold is in the north east, not too far from Metz.

David,

you are like clockwork. Every day at almost the same time an update. Today I like the unusual 12139 "fer à repasser". A 25kV 50Hz locomotive in use long before the mainlines changed to this system

Looking forward to your next update

Best regards

Vecchio

I've only just got around to replying to this, I was a bit busy yesterday and today.

I suppose I could say that as most of the photos are of Swiss trains you would expect them to be posted on time each day!

Beromunster and Menziken for today. Both are on a branch off the Seetalbahn from Emmenbrücke to Lenzburg which runs alongside the road for part of its length.

Beromunster was the terminus of the branch from Beinwil am See,  Menziken was a passing station on the line.
