Switzerland today, at Altstatten where there are 2 stations, one for the SBB and the other for the Appenzeller Bahnen.  A metre gauge tram line used to connect them but was closed a long time ago.

 

Altstatten lies near the Rhein, between St Margarethen and Buchs in the north east of the country.

Switzerland again, this time we are at Buchs, between St Margarethen and Sargans in the north east, next to the Rhein.  It is also the junction for Austria and the Arlberg route.

 

Trains to and from Austria change  from SBB to OBB traction and vice versa at Buchs.

These locos were built between 1929 and 1934 so were fairly old at the time of the photo.

Another part of north east Switzerland today, the village of Urnasch, about halfway between Herisau and Appenzell on the Appenzeller Bahn.  You will remember that this is metre gauge from previous photos.

C14816 and C14817 - the coaches and driving trailer look very similar to some of those still in use by the RhB. I guess there's a limited market for metre gauge, hence the common rolling stock designs.

The Swiss are quite good at standardising things, when they want to.

 

The various designs of standard gauge coach used by SBB are also used by most of the private standard gauge railways.

 

They also like to buy things made in Switzerland when they can.

Switzerland once more this evening.

 

As you travel east along Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) from Lausanne you will come to Cully, from where a metre gauge line, the Chemin de fer Electriques Veyveysans (CEV) climbs up to Blonay and then on to Les Pleaides.  Above Blonay it uses a rack.

 

From Blonay a branch line leads to Chamby.  This is now worked by the Blonay Chamby Preservation Society, which also has a museum, Musee de Chaulin part way along the line, also used as the loco depot.

 

Meanwhile the MOB (Montreux Oberland Bernois) climbs from Montreux through Fontanivent and on to Chamby before continuing on its way to Gstaad and Zweisimmen. The line crosses the motorway near Chernex (Autobahn or Autoroute depending on whether you are a German or French speaking Swiss) - the area's main language is French.

A look at the Rhatische Bahn today, the metre gauge railway in South East Switzerland. 

 

All these photos were taken at Landquart where there is both the RhB station on the line from Chur to Klosters and Davos and the SBB station on the line between Sargans and Chur.

The Harz lines - only 2 years after the Berlin Wall came down*. Bet that was interesting.

 

 

*nothing to do with my user name, which is a play on the north-south divide and the rivalry either side of the Pennines.

Wernigerode when steam ruled on standard gauge as well as metre gauge.  50 3586-0 shunts 99 5906-2 on a transporter wagon (July 1978).

 

1991 was definitely a time of transition, as the internal "grenzen" had been removed, but the two countries' railway systems had still to be merged  I called by at Wernigerode on my return from the (still united) Czechoslovakia and Poland (visas still needed) a couple of months earlier than Dave's visit - also taking in the Rübeland line (which I driven past, obliviously, thirteen years earlier).

That's a peculiar design of wagon under the narrow-gauge engine- it appears to be a non-bogie eight-wheeler, a type of wheel arrangement which I thought had died with the 19th century.

Yes, one that could pose problems for modellers with tight radius curves!  Here's a slightly better shot of the wagon and its load - if there is interest I can probably resolve the number with a higher resolution scan.  I can see why a rigid wheelbase would be more stable than a bogie wagon.

Lucky you, Dave - I missed that loco when I visited the station at Frederica in 2000!  I gather it was quite near the station, too - but it has now gone to join the museum collection at Randers.

Some French photos this evening, taken on 4th August 1978 at a level crossing at Marclaz.  It's probably not a place many (if any) of you are familiar with.

 

Marclaz lies about 4km south west of Thonon les Bains, on the line from Annemasse to Thonon les Bains and Evian les Bains, on the south side of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva).

 

We were on holiday near there with friends and stopped to take photos.  While we were there the lady crossing keeper invited us to have lunch with her while we took photos.

Some excellent shots there Dave of the BB25150 second series (5 locomotives, nos. 25171-5), which seemed to be confined to that area and not commonly seen.  These were the variant with the steel(?) front banding/emblem, but the large side panels.  The fthird (final series) had painted bands (as seen on 25192).

 

I hadn't realised that any of the (entire) BB25150 class (45 locos) were named.  It seems BB25175 was named "Le Creusot" (as in your picture) - the only named example.

Great pics of one of my favourite locations. I visited the Rhine Valley in 1998 staying at Boppard, specifically to travel on the diesel hauled branch line to Emmelshausen.

 

BR 215  121-5 is ready to propel it's 2 coach train up the steeply graded branch to Emmelshausen.
