A look at Herisau in North East Switzerland for today.

One one side of the road is the Bodensee Toggenburg Bahn station (now part of the Sudostbahn), on the other side is the metre gauge Appenzeller Bahnen station.

Herisau is on the BT line from St Gallen which leads eventually to Luzern along lines owned by the SOB and SBB.

ArthGoldau in 1988 for today's picture selection.

ArthGoldau is where the lines from Luzern, Zurich and the north through Rotkreuz meet to head south over the Gotthard.  It is also the junction for the Sudostbahn.

Tonight we'll move to another part of Switzerland to look at the BLS - Bern Lötschberg Simplon Bahn.

The photos were taken at Faulensee, the first station from Spiez on the line to Interlaken.  The lake in the background is the Thunersee (Lake Thun).

Hi Dave,

Very atmospheric those French photos, thanks.

I can't help but notice that they look very reminiscent of colourised prints from the early 1900's (no disrespect intended!), I wonder if that was Agfa film you used? I'm sure some of my old slide went like this you see!

I still enjoy seeing them anyway, thanks.

Cheers,

John E.

Dad took these photos, he was using Agfa film at the time (ASA 50).  Over time the blues tend toi turn greener which makes scanning and correcting them quite a big task!

Some I have more success with than others.  The French photos are not amongst Dad's best, for some reason the lens was not always stopping down correctly so there is some over exposure - but only on random images. When he got home and the slides came back from Agfa he bought a new camera!

Hi David,

Thanks for confirming what I had suspected, that Agfa film must be the bane of many photographers over the years but you've done a good job of rendering them very viewable indeed. I certainly find pictures from that period highly interesting, many thanks for your work on them. I'm guessing your dad was a very keen photographer?

Also, my apologies for getting you name wrong previously!

Cheers,

John.

Great pics of Zell am Zee, one of my favourite locations in Austria which I visited in 1995.

This pic shows one of the small class of 1010s in a new livery following a recent overhaul.

I think almost all colour films of the 60s (and even into the 80s) can give problems.  Agfa goes green, Fuji loses a lot of the green, it goes an olive colour, Ektachrome can have an overall green tinge and so on.

You also have the problem of fading caused by exposure to any light while they are stored.

Many years ago I read an article in Amateur Photographer which said that there is a measurable shift in colour balance on a slide after being in a projector for only thirty seconds!

There was even worse; studying geography and geology for A-levels in the early 1970s, I had to do a lot of fieldwork, recording sites with photographs. Given the time-lag between taking the photo and receiving the prints, often finding that there were problems with the shot, dad thought it would be a good idea to buy me a Polaroid, so I could check the image immediately. What we didn't realise was that, in the year between taking the photos, and submitting them for my practical exams, the prints had sometimes degenerated to the extent that they were unrecognisable. There were a few hurried sorties to retake things when we discovered this...

Austria again this evening, this time on a (very) wet day in Salzburg.

I travelled there on the train for the day from Zell am See.  In places the track was under water, even the rails were covered.  Perhaps electricity in Austria is less dangerous than Britain - I was on a train hauled by (I think) a Class 1044 electric.

More great pics Dave.

It does rain quite a lot in Austria. On my last visit in 2006 it rained every day for  a week!

It was also raining when I visited Bischofshofen in 1995 where a BR 2067 diesel was shunting.

These photos (especially Switzerland!) remind me of that series which was on the Travel Channel some years ago "Swiss Railway Journeys" which covered many of the narrow and standard gauge lines.

Worth a look if you haven't seen it.

I think it stll pops up occasionally.

Or you can buy them here:

http://www.mitv.co.uk/onlineshop.php

(Or watch some pirated ones on You Tube!)

EDIT

Like the photos as usual Dave.

Another visit to Denmark today.

A brief look at Odense where the Danish National Railway Museum is situated, together with a couple from Ribe.  I'm sure you all know Denmark well enough not to need any further details of the locations - but they are on Google Earth!

As usual I find it to believe that it is over twenty years since I went to Odense.
