Staying in Switzerland this evening with a visit ti Disentis.  Disentis is the end on junction between the Rhätische Bahn and the Furka Oberalp Bahn (now the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn or MGB).  At Disentis the RhB and FO local services terminate while other trains, including the Glacier Express, change engines from the rack fitted FO locos to the adhesion only locos of the RhB.

It is also worth having a walk around Disentis, it's a pleasant place.  The Benedictine monastery was founded around 720.

I sometimes stayed in Flensburg, in the north of Germany, on my way back from Germany and Switzerland to catch the ferry to North Shields from Esbjerg in Denmark.

The station was regularly visited by DSB trains working across the border from Denmark.

Here are a few shots of a couple of these trains for today's photos.

Those rebuilds of the V100.2 design certainly looked ungainly, towering over the regular metre gauge stock - and dwarfing the otherwise chunky 2-10-2Ts.

post-10122-0-85907000-1434311589_thumb.jpg

199 871-5 pilots 99 7232-4 into Drei Annen Hohne, July 2001.

To be pedantic, they were derived from DR series 110 (keeping the same running numbers) - the subsequent 201 classification arose after unification of the DB/DR locomotive fleets.  Rebuilding entailed changing from a B-B (diesel hydraulic) wheel arrangement to C-C.

Eddie,

Thanks very much for the information.

I like the photo too - Drei Annen Hohne has changed a bit!

I've visited the Harz system a few times but never seen one of the 199.8s working - they certainly dwarf the steam loco, and I'd always thought of them as pretty big beasts!

More great OBB pics and memories. Thanks Dave.

I spent a week in Seefeld in 1990 and took the train to Innsbruck. A short walk from the station took me to this location with a great view for trainwatching.

A visit to Thun on the BLS in Switzerland today.  Today, as it happens, we won't see any BLS trains! Thun was also served by the Emmental Burgdorf Thun  Bahn with it's red trains.  The EBT formed a part of the RM (Regionalverkehr Mittelland), which is now merged with the BLS.

When we were visiting Thun a steam special came in on the BLS-GBS line.

What with the BOB centenary celebrations there was quite a lot of railway interest during the holiday even though it wasn't intended!

I only wish I had taken my 35mm camera as well as the camcorder!

(German speakers notice the local Swiss spelling of Cheese on the Cheese Reastaurant car in C16443)

Keith

EDIT

I think you will find Thun station the limit of the SBB mainline from Bern and SBB property.

I know the other 3 lines into it are private (BLS)

I didn't ever encounter the cheese restaurant car but I do remember the McDonalds one. Not what was wanted went travelling from Zurich to Geneva Airport and expecting an enjoyable normal dinner en route, only to find it was McDonalds or nothing. The worst thing about it was you never knew which train on the route it would appear on, so couldn't plan avoidance ahead.

One of the fascinations of this thread is when it prompts me to investigate some mostly forgotten pictures from trips of my own.  I hope that they are both complementry and complimentary!

Here are two examples of the EBT Re4/4 fleet, taken at nearby Burgdorf in May 1998.  The same loco that DaveF photographed at Thun, no. 112, has been repainted into the striking new red and white livery.  Classmate no. 113 remains in (SBB) green.

I first visited Thun in May 1981, when I found the EBT represented by its earlier electric class Be4/4 no. 105, dating from the early 1930s.
