139 135 looks quite beaten up ;)

I really must remember to type the correct loco number in the captions - I had it right in my notes too!

A return to Denmark today with more photos taken at Esbjerg.

The first four were taken in the evening, after I had arrived in Denmark on the ferry from North Shields, the last one was while waiting to board the ferry one August afternoon the following year.

We are in Switzerland again today at Zweisimmen, where the MOB meets the BLS.  The MOB (Montreux Oberland Bahn) is metre gauge, the BLS (Bern Lötschberg Simplon) is of course standard gauge.

There used to be a short piece of dual gauge track on display at Zweisimmen as a precursor to dualling the BLS.

I don't know if anything ever became of the proposals.

I think it is still intended to lay dual gauge track from Zweisimmen via Spiez to Interlaken Ost .... one day.

Some photos taken at Assmannshausen on the east bank of the Rhine, in Germany for today.

I sometimes stayed a night or two there when travelling to and from Switzerland by car.  A few years ago I was looking through some old family photo albums and found photos of my grandparents there in the late 1920s.  They had stayed in the same hotel as I did.

Great pictures David.

Especially nice to see pictures of the RhB when it was still a proper railway, before the take over by pendelzugs and containers. Reminds me I need to sort out my pictures of my travels in the 80's and early 90's and get them scanned.

have you got any pics of the 'zillertalbahn'? a friend of mine is modelling it and any you have would be great. thanks

I have a few at Jenbach, I'll have to find them and work on them to remove colour casts etc, so it will not be in the next couple of days - I generally try to keep at least a week ahead with preparing photos.  I'll try to do them soon. - it's about time I got some more Austrian ones done!

This evening we are in Chamonix, France, looking at the Chemin de Fer Chamonix Montenvers which is narrow gauge, taking passengers to see the Mer de Glace, a glacier.

The first photo is taken from a cable car on the way back down to Chamonix from Le Brévent, on the south side of the valley nearly opposite Mont Blanc.

St Omer, not too far inland from Calais today.

The photos were taken in the summer of 1978 on the way back to catch a ferry from Calais.  We stayed a night in St Omer as we hadn't booked a crossing and decided to cross the next morning rather than rush and try to catch a late ferry and then have to drive back to Essex during the night.  It's as well we hadn't booked a crossing as we would have missed it by over a week as while staying in Les Gets we had met some French friends who had a chalet in Morzine so we stayed for a week with them.

The first three photos were taken in the early morning in the Netherlands at Eindewege near Vliissingen (Flushing) just after landing from the ferry which ran from Sheerness to Vlissingen.

The last two were taken later the same day while driving through Belgium.

Excellent. Thanks very much for these David. I've always rather liked St. Omer.

The station is really monumental for a town of its size possibly because two very influential politicians who the C.F. du Nord wanted to impress came from there.

Sadly, SNCF/RFF seem to have been looking after it about as well as the rest of the French rail network and for the past four years the building, which is a listed monument, has been closed and cordoned off because of fears of roof or ceiling falls and replaced by a portable building.

http://static1.lavoixdunord.net/sites/default/files/imagecache/vdn_photo_principale_article/articles/ophotos/20140526/753977858_B972789190Z.1_20140526193725_000_G9V2HEFB7.1-0.jpg

There are plans for restoration provided most of the costs, which will be in the millions, come from other potential users than SNCF. Why does the phrase "a stitch in time" come to mind?

By the way and I hope not too OT, If you turn right out of the station and follow the canal towpath under the railway bridge you'll come onto a quayside on the Place de la Ghere. Here you'll still find some metre gauge track running closely beside the canal though some of it has been tarred over since I took this photo.

post-6882-0-47923600-1435922115_thumb.jpg

This is not from one of the many French public NG railways but is one of the last remains of an electric canal towing system  that operated until 1973 (and much later for some of the longer canal tunnels) and stretched for a thousand kilometres with various branches from close to Dunkerque to the Rhine.beyond Mulhouse.

A bit more track and two 60cm gauge tractors (actually from another part of the system in Alsace) can be found near the preserved boat lift at les Fontinettes on the outskirts of St. Omer.

post-6882-0-27954000-1435922125_thumb.jpg

There is a really good site with plenty of photos and plans of this little known railway system at http://papidema.free.fr/traction_vn_1.php

It's in French of course but the automatic translators are getting better.

Dave, what is "shubting"? ;) (607 caption)

Many thanks for asking.

It's a spelling mistake, through trying to type too quickly, yet again.

It should be shunting.
