RMweb Gold DaveF Posted June 25, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2015 (edited) Some photos taken at Assmannshausen on the east bank of the Rhine, in Germany for today. I sometimes stayed a night or two there when travelling to and from Switzerland by car. brigo
Great pictures David. Especially nice to see pictures of the RhB when it was still a proper railway, before the take over by pendelzugs and containers. Reminds me I need to sort out my pictures of my travels in the 80's and early 90's and get them scanned. Brian G.

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted June 30, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 30, 2015 St Omer, not too far inland from Calais today. The photos were taken in the summer of 1978 on the way back to catch a ferry from Calais. We stayed a night in St Omer as we hadn't booked a crossing and decided to cross the next morning rather than rush and try to catch a late ferry and then have to drive back to Essex during the night. It's as well we hadn't booked a crossing as we would have missed it by over a week as while staying in Les Gets we had met some French friends who had a chalet in Morzine so we stayed for a week with them. Thanks very much for these David. I've always rather liked St. Omer. The station is really monumental for a town of its size possibly because two very influential politicians who the C.F. du Nord wanted to impress came from there. Sadly, SNCF/RFF seem to have been looking after it about as well as the rest of the French rail network and for the past four years the building, which is a listed monument, has been closed and cordoned off because of fears of roof or ceiling falls and replaced by a portable building. http://static1.lavoixdunord.net/sites/default/files/imagecache/vdn_photo_principale_article/articles/ophotos/20140526/753977858_B972789190Z.1_20140526193725_000_G9V2HEFB7.1-0.jpg There are plans for restoration provided most of the costs, which will be in the millions, come from other potential users than SNCF. Why does the phrase "a stitch in time" come to mind? By the way and I hope not too OT, If you turn right out of the station and follow the canal towpath under the railway bridge you'll come onto a quayside on the Place de la Ghere. Here you'll still find some metre gauge track running closely beside the canal though some of it has been tarred over since I took this photo. This is not from one of the many French public NG railways but is one of the last remains of an electric canal towing system that operated until 1973 (and much later for some of the longer canal tunnels) and stretched for a thousand kilometres with various branches from close to Dunkerque to the Rhine.beyond Mulhouse. A bit more track and two 60cm gauge tractors (actually from another part of the system in Alsace) can be found near the preserved boat lift at les Fontinettes on the outskirts of St. Omer. There is a really good site with plenty of photos and plans of this little known railway system at http://papidema.free.fr/traction_vn_1.php It's in French of course but the automatic translators are getting better.
