German/Swiss paddle steamers

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Is anyone aware of available plans or models for paddle steamers suitable for a German layout. Happy to scratch build but I'm having a problem finding any details or kits available. There are a few photographs of early Rhine steamers and quite a few showing similar vessels on the Swiss lakes but I'm having difficulty with any specific details (I've put all sorts of combinations in the search engines!) Any help would be most welcome.

p.s. 1:87 scale or as near as ( if plans are available I'm happy with whatever scale they are produce in )

Just for interest I've scratch built these in the past if anyone is interested :)

Cheers for now

The book "Die Geschichte der Schiffahrt auf dem Thuner und Brienzersee" has plans, but you will need to enlarge them. As an alternative "Mit Kohle, Dampf und Schaufelradern".

Somewhere I seem to recall that you could download a paper model of a paddle steamer like the one you show.

Not sure if this might be of assistance

I have a feeling I once saw drawings of a Swiss vessel in "The Engineer", but can't swear to it - or say which volume. http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/The_Engineer_%28Bound_Volumes%29

Thank you for all the replies, it is very much appreciated when other members of this parish take the time to help.

I'll look at all the above and see what comes up.

Thank you all very much.

This site has card models in 1:100.

I know nothing about the firm apart from what is on the website but it may help.

Think you mean the PS Rigi which is in the Swiss Transport Museum at Lucerne. Download available at http://dolfmeister.com/extras/downloads/

Hi Mike,

The first book reference would appear to be the tome to go for, however, a search on a well know site (sounds like a South American rainforest, you know the one) has one copy at £70+ which, although I have purchased many good books on ships.......hmmmm?

The second suggestion will probably be more acceptable and might reveal some more interest.

Thanks again, you time is much appreciated

Thank you for the information about "Uri", it gives me something to work upon with the general sections through the hull and could possibly be scaled for the purpose. I'll give it a go :)

Thank you.

Also if you are interested in the machinery of the Swiss Paddle Steamers there is an article on it in the June 24 1927 edition of the Engineer  http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/images/c/c7/Er19270624.pdf.  Not immediately aware of any with drawings of the vessels themselves but will have another look through the stuff I have collected over the years.

If you can find a s\h copy of 'The illustrated history of paddle steamers' (Hilton, pub. Lausanne 1976) it has good drawings of Uri & Major Davel, side, plan & cutaway drawings

Usual sellers stock it at reasonable cost

Try Bookfinder.com - there are 4 copies on there cheaper than that (plus the one you found on Amazon, and another more expensive).

That looks very good.  Is the hull plating just thin ply glued to the shaped ribs/cross pieces?  The problems with shaping the hull are what has always put me off having a go at scratch building one.

Thanks

Thank you for your comments, much appreciated.

The hull is made of 1mm thick ply which is formed around the flat base and the ribs which were shaped as per the plan I worked to.

To be perfectly honest I "just took the bull by the horns" so to speak and gave it a go with my first model, as per earlier photographs posted above. It may surprise you what can be achieved once you follow a logic build and if you have a decent plan to follow and lay the frames out ( as per the real shipbuilders would do) it seems to work I've found. If you're unsure of making one in wood why not download a card model first and try out your skills, then just transfer the templates to your chosen material. It could be plasticard or ply. Give it a go, you may be surprised !

Footnote: I'm primarily a railway modeller, but, seeing the Thames barge I thought I'd try making one for a harbour scene on a previous layout and once I'd started I found both the modelling and research very enjoyable ( be warned ! You too could get hooked !!!)

I will be posting details of the model in the near future if anyone is interested with pictures of various build stages. She is currently about half completed.

Happy modelling everyone, happy modelling :)

How about this web site. I bought this model and it was sent well packed. It appears to be more OO than HO scale, but looks excellent.
