Rapido/Locomotion Models GNR Stirling Single

Seems like APC have seriously messed up. Locomotion not to blame, other than placing trust in this contractor. Given it is school holidays, what is wrong with hiring temporary staff and dispatching via Royal Mail next day out of Locomotion itself?

I'm minded that Model Rail (I might be wrong) abandoned a contract fulfilment agent that it tired for delivering some of its limited editions. It then entered into a partnership with KMRC over the ModelRailOffers set up, i.e. a specialist industry company dealing with packing and dispatch of its models. Maybe Locomotion should be going down a similar path?

In the meantime, it was noted above that there might be some mix up in the dispatch of DCC fitted/unfitted models. Sounds like someone at the fulfilment centre opening a bulk box and packing them without checking the precise product code, and possibly untraceable! I will be checking mine carefully. But I guess there might be a risk, certainly from collectors who won't run their models, that this mix up will go unnoticed, and Locomotion may be short of some versions. I don't mean to fan the flames. Obviously APC are responsible here and, depending on contract, will have to rectify the issue.

An unfortunate final hurdle for what appears to have been an excellent project and end product.

Just so as you know, you need to check the box ends, and might want to do so on delivery.

Did APC address the boxes then?

Yes it seems so.... See Stuart's post from 27 July (copied below)!

The reason is we are using Apc in the uk who have been able to wrap and parcel up all UK based orders in just 3 days which if I was doing it myself in the museum would have taken me the best part of 2 weeks, however Apc aren’t able to ship internationally so I will be doing these myself in the next cple weeks using ups to ship as there is a lot to go through but I’m having a long weekend as I’ve been busy sorting out all orders everyday this month, even working during some long booked in holidays to ensure the models got out so If I have missed someone in the initial shipment I do appologise. And if any one wants to say hello I will be visiting railexne tomorrow

Regards

Stuart

Tell you what, next time Locomotion have an exclusive new tooling due, I'll offer to go up and help them package up the parcels. My fees, are one of the produced models. I used to work in a Royal Mail parcel warehouse so I have some experience in the industry.

So did I.

Mine's arrived!  Admittedly addressed to somebody called 'Charman' who apparently lives at my address but here safe and sound nonetheless.  Interested to see what the carriages that are proposed for it are, according to the letter that came with it.

Maybe the name was a subliminal instruction to make yourself a cup of tea, read the instructions, carefully unbox and test the loco!

Firstly we would like to thank everyone for their patience & understanding in the fulfilment of orders for Stirling Single. We are fully aware of the issues experienced with some of our loyal customers receiving duplicate orders which has been caused during upload of all details into the fulfilment system.

We are working tirelessly with them to rectify this issue and have all information on which customers have been sent or received duplicate orders and if needed we will be contact them in due course, we can only apologise for this error happening with what we think is our best model yet!

Due to the high number of calls we are receiving you may see a delay in these been answered but we have added extra staff in to support us during this busy period for Locomotion Models.

Please be rest assured we have enough models to fulfil all pre orders and we will have further info overnight from our fulfilment provider once POD for models have come through the system and we can identify which customers haven’t received there order.

We do hope that once you receive your order you will be very impressed and happy with the final model.

Cheers

Good day chaps - got my No 1 today - on time, correctly addressed and right model - so not everyone was unfortunate... but sympathy to those who may be.

It is currently clogging round my test circuit running in as I write - at step 14/28 with 8 reasonably heavy Bachmann coaches (4xTPO and 4x Thompson brakes) at around a scale 50mph - it is certainly capable of taking more though and at a very significantly higher speed !!

So - first the good things - it is a beautiful model - and it looks so different - it was a smooth runner out of the box and I think a Johnson single in MR red would be an excellent contrast and a marvellous follow up !!

I changed to a sound model following a most impressive APT-E but to be honest this sound is ok but it is not as mind-blowing.

A few points on the sound...I am open to responses/suggestions on this - most of my sound has been infernal combustion related to date - steam is based on memory and preserved lines stuff..

1. There doesn't appear to be "coast" facility (e.g. when you back off the speed step by 1 or 2) - the closest I could get to that sort of drifting hissing as a loco goes down hill with the train comfortably in hand, eases back onto the coaches or slows as it comes into platforms was to put F4 on (blower) at slow speed and turn the "chuff" sound off.

2. The whistle appears to me to have quite long minimum standard length - I guess its a canadian thing for warning bison across the prairie (their operating notes are catching.... G** forbid :help:  )

3. F10 - Heavy Load very good for simulating the noise that a steam train makes when going thro a cutting/under a bridge - it is a deeper note

and gives quite good reverberation effect)

Now the only bad thing - those safety chains at front - mine arrived in pieces in the bottom of the internal wrapper - they are a complete b***** to fix and being magnetic they cavort like nobody's business at the sight of a pair of pliers and needless to say when in tweezers they ping off into the undergrowth as soon as they can escape. By accident I found that they are easier to re-assemble (under a really high powered microscope :jester: ) once the fixing point on the front buffer beam has also dropped off  !! . Now to find the errant link!! - on the other hand I still have some "PC safety chains" (very fine ones if I remember and if I can find them) - from one of their screw link etches - I might have to think about that one.

So overall - I am extremely happy - and APC did their job (now that is provocative !! :biggrin_mini2:...) ... and when can we have the Johnson Spinner!!

I have never posted on this forum before but wanted to reassure Ian McCann, who I have never met and may not even be a reader of this forum, that I received 2 Stirling singles with my address on this morning but only one with my name, the other his. I returned his to the local depot for them to return to Locomotion who I am sure will sort it all out in due course. The fact that I only had one letter today with the spare chains, invoice and the good news about GNR rolling stock suggests that good old Royal Mail must be working from a reliable list of names and addresses so hopefully Locomotion will be able to identify the intended recipients. At least I was only charged once which seems to be bothering some on this thread. I had been sent 2 emails but it was too late to stop the delivery.

Replacement chains should be in the post. Some of us received them today.

My model arrived today (*).

On unpacking it's obvious early on that all is not quite right.....

SSi1.jpg

SSi2.jpg

The front running plate has a touch of the 'ski-slope' disease that affected the Hornby A3s a while back.

Also, the coal rails on the tender are a bit up and down....

SSi3.jpg

So,on to my question: Are anyone else's models affected in a similar manner?

If the faults with mine are common to everyone else's, there's little point me returning mine for replacement. If, however, mine is exceptional, I will contact Locomotion.

Cheers
Adrian

(*) It was addressed simply to 'Fern'. Fortunately the rest of the address was correct.

APC sent me an e-mail on Friday saying that my delivery would be today with the delivery deadline set for 16.00.

No sign yet! If the consignment number quoted is the same as the tracking number the tracking system doesn't work.

I did get my paperwork and chains, however. The new chains needed two pairs of fine pliers to undo a link so they won't be falling apart!

One of my chains had a hook at both ends. All I need now is the loco.

Adrian - Front running plate is fine on mine. There may be a bit of a wobble on the coal rails but this does not bother me, these would have taken a lot of punishment during coaling and were more likely bent rather than straight.

Ok, back to Locomotion it goes.

I too am not too bothered about the coal rails, with my hamfisted handling, they'd probably end up bent anyway!

Cheers

I had intended to ignore this thread as some of the things people are saying are downright childish, but I'm getting used to that in the product threads now.

Mine arrived safely about 45 mins ago, right address wrong name but it's the right version so I don't care. It's hard to put into words just how superb this model is! Well worth the wait, well worth the money.

attachicon.gif009.JPGattachicon.gif010.JPGattachicon.gif011.JPG

These were the best pictures I could take for now as the rainy weather here is not conducive to photography! ;)

The loco is stunning, the detail is insane, the loco/tender connection is brilliant and the booklet is fantastic! Rapido really need to write the booklets for all model trains!! :D

Thank you & well done to Locomotion for commissioning this wonderful loco and continuing to provide us with our heritage in model form, and thank you & well done to Rapido for creating such a utter masterpiece!

.....I need to go lie down....

- (A very happy) Alex

Just received mine too... Wrong name, right address, right model. Packaging is superb! Having opened the box, I must congratulate the chaps at Rapido not only for their superb model, but also for the instruction book, which puts a whole new comic slant on things! Anyone who doesn't find the instruction book funny must already have started their journey from somewhere to nowhere via the sense of humour avoiding line...

Having unboxed mine, there's a very slight rearward dip in the front section of the running plate, but nowhere near as bad as in photos above (mine is negligible).

The rear tender wheelset is dragging a bit though, feels a little tight when rotated by hand. Any ideas how to free it up very slightly?

Top model, top marks Rapido! Thank You!

Richard.

So, as expected, the thread now transitions from 'when am I going to get mine' to 'I have a problem, do other people? where can I send it?'........

Isn't that what the thread is for? To point out problems.

spet0114 has got a serious bit of damage to his model and it's worth pointing it out so that other people can be aware that theirs may have similar problems. If you have got a problem then now is the time to speak up as there might not be any left in the near future as replacements.

I've finally got home and opened one of my three parcels... I'm a diesel man and generally not bothered about steam although I appreciate it. And as soon as I saw the Stirling Single announcement I knew I wanted one. And it's probably one of the best decisions I've ever made as far as models go.

The model is just superb!

Now just got to wait for instructions for what to do with the other two models sitting in front of me!

Mine has now had the specified running time at moderate pace forward and reverse and the initial gear whine quickly quieted, and it now achieves a really good dead slow crawl, very smooth indeed on 'vanilla' DC. I have among other testing features a bad bump on my test track and the loco was making a most alarming shriek at this point: one of the life guards scraping the rail top. General movement on track very sweet, no wiggling about and the loco and tender move as a unit, goes through the couple of poor curve transitions in the test circuit without any visible evidence

Traction. On level track with 36" rad curves, built it up to a load of 8 Bach mk1s. Lot of slipping at the start to move that load, but happy enough once on the move. And then it all came to a shuddering halt. Rapido have provided an overload cut out! The loco to tender coupling lets go at about 15g force, quite funny that. But this is more than adequate pulling power in any case.

All rather pleasing so far.
