Fiddle yard testing is now finished (all the GC 4-6-0s work as usual) and dismantled. Taking advantage of a family gathering on Sunday the rest of the layout was moved across to the middle of the shed in one piece - using six pairs of hands.

post-1643-0-73600700-1450777125_thumb.jpg

The shed is looking a bit crowded now and door access is limited but I need to get round the front to check the dock system and pt the LOR on. I finally worked out how to get the two big Cwmafon boards out of the way with the aid of some steel hooks

post-1643-0-73600700-1450777125_thumb.jpg

Looking the other way, there isn't much room down the front but it should be enough.

the LOR turn back siding has been moved, extended and fitted over one of the fiddle yard boards. The backscene at the side of Brunswick goods will be back in place for now but I intend to open out the cutting here as far as Park Street bridge now that the cassettes have gone.

Cleaning and testing MDHB on today's agenda, LOR next week and everything is on schedule.

Enough room for you but possibly not for Barry O (or me, come to that)...

Fettling and testing on the dock railway finished, everything working so today I've put the LOR on.

post-1643-0-66486000-1451581271_thumb.jpg

All that works as well, just got to extend to the new positions of the turnback sidings.

One small snag has surfaced at the Liverpool end though.

post-1643-0-17576100-1451581485_thumb.jpg

This doesn't matter at the moment but the EB1 is standing on what will be the exit from Wentworth Junction to the fiddle yard on its way down to Wath. Not much clearance for the wire and pantographs there!

post-1643-0-90310100-1451581597_thumb.jpg

It does just fit but it might be an idea to make the LOR siding removable.

Lastly, specially for Barry O

GCR B9 4-6-0 61475 is now finished, should be through the paintshop before the Southampton show.

The "small wheeled fish" engine does indeed look very nice. On the subject of small wheels, maybe smaller wheels should be fitted to the EB1 too, as a desperation measure to lower it? :jester:

If that doesn't work, give it to me to look after - I'm sure I can find some 16.5mm gauge wheels for it.....

I had no idea that the MSW electrification ever stretched to Liverpool.

Yes, the B9 should be running at Southampton. More progress yesterday with the last big job, extending the off scene part of the LOR into the fiddle yard area.post-1643-0-03807000-1452073762_thumb.jpg

At the Dingle end the trackbed now turns parallel to the layout as it emerges from the tunnel.

post-1643-0-62334200-1452073830_thumb.jpg

The old turnback and siding now repositioned along the layout, far less of a nuisance than it was sticking out into the operating space. It might obstruct the view for the dock operator though.

There's a lot more to add at the northern end but it will give space for more trains when I get round to building some. Three more shouldn't make it too crowded, another rebuilt set and another original one plus a widened set if clearance trials are successful. The new trackbed is almost all outside the dock tracks so shouldn't get in the way too much.

post-1643-0-37568200-1452074220_thumb.jpg

First job was to lay new track into Dingle tunnel as this will be fairly inaccessible later. The old track was laid with conventional sleepers in the tunnel but more recently photos taken inside the tunnel have revealed that the track continued on longitudinal timbers (they are still there) but presumably ballasted once off the Hobson decking.

Presumably the longitudinal timbers continued all the way to Dingle station but I can't find any photos showing the track in there. It was extremely dark as I remember, photos show the trains and platforms but not much else. This is now far from an academic question since the new alignment of the LOR allows for the possibility of an add-on board at the end of the layout containing a sectioned model of the underground station.

As the layout is extended more locos are required - especially 2-6-4T of the Fairburn and Stanier variety. 2 DJH kit built Fairburns (mine)  and a modified Hornby Stanier (Mikes) are now with me for weathering

well the Stanier has been "chuck brown paint at it" weathered by Hornby so I will rework it to a more suitable hue

Not sure how many 2-6-4T that makes but it is bound not to be enough!

So will I, 42437 is a bit of a stop gap covering the noticeable lack of Stanier 2-6-4Ts at Brunswick. At the moment it's just had its pony wheels changed (because the Hornby ones woudn't stay on the track) and a bit of springing added to the bogie. It will get new wheels and motion eventually, I have all the etch drawings done for this after building two 7mm ones, just a matter of re-scaling.

So a bit of weathering done today for Herculaneum Dock.

First up the Hornby (weathering from Hornby provided by chicking brown paint on it) Stanier - now weathered in darker black

Not sure who advised Hornby and Bachmann re weathering of hours as they seem to think a coat of brown spray is weathering. Which it isn't. Yes you do get brown track dirt but not everywhere on every engine. And its a right pain to cover up!

Now where is that B9?

Yes, the 01 is the same, too light a colour and all the same shade, yet the upper half of the body is pristine.  It's next in the queue, after the S15 and Std 4 mogul that are disappearing under several coats of different colours grime and a touch of rust.
