The Famous No. 6

BCDR No.6 completed by Phil Aspinwall, running sweetly on Stanfording. He has fitted working inside motion to her which involved some changes to the kit as designed.

I have started my kit for No. 6; it has thrown up a few challenges! For some reason the the valance hasn't quite fitted the platform which isn't in line with the sub-frame. Anyway, it'll hardly be noticed when finished.

The little bits of angle on the cab, soldered to the side only, are to help me locate the cab front - they'll be removed (Obviously) when it's all soldered up.

I've discovered that the boiler's diameter is too small! It's about 4' 5" which is quoted in Des Coakham's book, but this would be the barrel diameter without cladding. Phil's engine has the kit boiler, which as you can see  makes up into a lovely model - and there can't be many people around who will remember the loco! It's that big step between smokebox and boiler that drew my attention to it.

Fred Graham - a contemporary of Drew Donaldson - measured No. 6 and I believe built a clockwork model. His measurements were generally quite accurate, except when he had to compromise to fit a clockwork mechanism. This sketch of his shows how the boiler should be; unfortunately he didn't record the diameter, but on his drawing I measured it as 34mm so I've used that for my model.

Here is my attempt to boiler-roll! And my interpretation of a hose clamp!

Here are Roger Crombleholme's instructions for making a smokebox door being put into action - rub with a blunt instrument in a circular pattern

Once soldered onto the backing plate, it has worked well.

Next I had to add some width to the firebox, the result is fairly close to what's needed, it will have to do! There needs to be a stepped ring between the smokebox and boiler which will help.
