Some great projects on here. I can't believe the state of the DP2 model before you started.

It was in a bit of a bad way but nothing a bit of filler and tlc couldnt fix. They are my favourite sort of projects to do.

Cheers for looking

Well Christmas and New Year certainly got in the way of any decent modelling time for me, barely managed to do anything until last week since the last update.

As things stand now, the green Janus is now varnished and etched plates added which finished it off very nicely, just need the horse plates to finish off fully. Im going to have to get another to do a blue one!

20200112_230945.jpg.b9b5c13c7f0c45b7cf1131d0080b7473.jpg

20200112_230945.jpg.b9b5c13c7f0c45b7cf1131d0080b7473.jpg

Freight liners flats as of this afternoon had 3 coats of blue brushed over them, very tedious job but nearly there. Still need to source wheels and affix bogies but moving on slowly.

20200112_231028.jpg.c4112e549134010c9083440390e75655.jpg

The caboose is pretty much finished, my plan for using some old bits of airfix aeroplane transfers for the lettering has failed as on further inspection the fonts were nowt like what i wanted. Back to the drawing board, i may have a go at making my own.

20200112_231013.jpg.c814d7fc0b7e25f9f97c0f140ca65a83.jpg

Dads prototype set is nearly finished too thanks to Gibbo's donations of couplings from Dapol kits. (The first set Gibbo sent are still MIA with Royal Mail!) They are in the process of being sprayed black, and were in the shed still when i left for home this aft so no pics today should have them running around soon, although i have my reservations of his use of pound shop spray paint!

Finally my latest batch of TTA tanks are very nearly finished, i put dome trelansfers on the 2 black ones today and nearly finished the basic painting of the grey pair. A few more transfers need to be sent away for come payday.

20200112_231051.jpg.79fddedb449fddb90292510537b37cb2.jpg

Nice to be back to normal and back at the bench again, more soon all being well.

Cheers

James

That green Janus looks superb, a great bit of modelling - like everything  you do.  No, not another glimpse of your blue Kestrel, you making me want to repaint mine.  I've ordered nameplates for my blue Janus.

Thanks Colin, your blue one looks fantastic too, ill be deffo doing a blue one to go with the green one at some point. Have you ordered the Yorkshire horse plates too? Im sure Narrow Planet did them but couldnt see them when i ordered the Yorkshire & BTH plates.

Kestrel is sat patiently waiting for the freightliners to trubdle around behind it at somepoint, as you can tell, things rarely move as im pretty much constantly building and painting things!

Thanks for looking and keep up the great work

Bit more done today as i was home alone so took advantage with a full afternoon and evening session up at Dads. Bright sunshine was perfect for doing transfers so have lettered up 7 containers and the grey TTA's.

Iv run out of transfers now so have a list ready for payday on Friday.

I used 3 packs from Railtech for the containers, interestingly the 'Freightliner' wording is bigger than the flat space moulded into the Hornby container so you can see where iv had to set the F over the ribs. Numbers were done by chopping and changing the number transfers to keep them unique. You may spot my rescue job container has been done as an insulated container and lettered as a P type, tedious work but i know its just about right!

20200119_220024.jpg.1ed8c0a2ca96d327c726387c82118e11.jpg

As well as doing transfers, i had a dry run with mounting the bogies for my 5 set, all went well n a little trundle around was a success, bogies back out and the mounting pins stuck into the flats followed by a first coat of blue, edging closer to completion, next stop will be transfers for these from Fox.

20200119_220043.jpg.fc7c3e4fa43390715f7d1d26379fc38b.jpg

My Dads shorty 4 set is now in black and has been pulled round a few times, iv borrowed some wheels so its running as a 3 set until we get the decent wheels ordered. Couple of little jobs to do like pipes and lettering.

20200119_215827.jpg.f6896188cf66bce59526caf237832579.jpg

Finally i started a Cambrian Dogfish kit i picked up with a couple of others from Ebay last week, should really get things finished before starting more!

Cheers for looking

James

PS @Gibbo675 iv also ordered some decal paper to try sort some numbers for the caboose, all being well ill gladly send you some over.

Hi James,

Good work with all those Freightliner bits and bobs.

Bad news though the containers with blue stripes ought to be lettered British Rail but I won't tell anyone if you don't !

Rule 1 will sort it all out.

Gibbo.

Hi James,

I pulled a similar stunt last week when I painted a cream panel on the guards doors of my 5-BEL instead of plain brown !

So easily done when you go into 'auto pilot'!

Im off to investigate British Rail brandings for freightliner use now

Thanks to @Gibbo675 pointing out my glaring error with the blue stripe container, i have splashed out on a bit of decal paper and downloaded the rail font to put things right.

Todays test print on white backed paper, i do have some clear backed stuff so hopefully the numbers for the caboose will be fine on that. Hopefully know more tomorrow once i get them on the models.Gibbo, drop me a message with your address and ill send some on for your blue stripes.

Cheers

James

Evening all, tonight was the trial night to see how the home spun transfers fared on the models, and i can say things have worked out pretty well.

I managed to get the freightliner branding and the double arrow off the blue stripe container intact and re used it on a red stripe, I then set about applying the correct British Rail branding. Id printed this on a white backed sheet and matched the blue to railmatch BR blue (RGB set to zero red, 76 blue and 76 green) The font was downloaded from a quick google of british rail fonts, link found was to an old thread on RMweb. Font size 20 seemed to be the same as the Freightliner transfer from Railtec.

I ruined my 1st attempt as the blue colour easily chips away so have found the easiest thing to apply them is to cut a strip leaving 2mm above and below the B and the R to fit in the 9mm moulded paint lines. Once the wording was where i was happy with i trimmed the ends off. Making sure to use a new sharp knife. A new double arrow was applied which looks very white compared to the transfer, i think the letters look a little dark due to being applied over the painted stripe, if i do another i would perhaps leave it grey or paint the end of the stripe where the words are white to enhance the letters. A little weathering should sort it though.

20200127_221949.jpg.000ce014aa191688c08c0c99c2e094a2.jpg

Also on the white backed stuff i made some 'Insulated' labels for my flat sided 20fter and did some red triangles for the sides, measurements taken from the fox pack i have for the flats.

I also had some clear decal paper so knocked up some of data panels, the wording is legible but probably not quite right!

20200127_231231.jpg.2f68fe8ec05cc72f776d1a669dc68520.jpg

Finally i have also made up some number sets for cabooses so this is now all but ready for varnishing at last!

20200127_231301.jpg.dcad30151f53e9b203c416b053c498b9.jpg

All in all im pretty chuffed with the results, always like adding these extra little bits to bring them to life.

20200127_231215.jpg.483c55a0800ab4574fe5e41b6d1cae14.jpg

If anyones interested in the blue stripe decals i could sort out doing some more, ill re format them so they are easier to use.

Thanks for looking in

  • 3 weeks later...

Well after a busy few weeks with work and stuff im back to the workbench. Today saw great progress and actually got some things finished

20200216_233122.jpg.8a1a5f0caf469520e6a1e122dad8a2c5.jpg

All my current painted containers have now had all transfers applied including home made data panels and red triangles, did 8 boxes today and that was more than enough, cant imagine doing 38 like Gibbo!

20200216_200511.jpg.dd17442af690ec676c1653800252b6e6.jpg

The caboose is now finished, i brushed a coat of satin varnish this morning and this evening fitted the side bubble windows, these are a ticht push fit after much careful filing, crystal clear was then applied through the back window to keep in place hence the white window. All dried clear so all good. The rest of the windows got the crystal clear treatment. The back window was done last and was a mare to do, lost count of the times i had to re apply as the surface tension was lost. All done now and its ready for its 1st ride on a flat.

20200216_233028.jpg.2c962fdfaab9775f106bc3b89d4db1dc.jpg

As i was in the swing of applying transfers i finished off the last 4 TTAs iv been working on and off. Trabsfers on i then brushed a coat of satin on all 10, may need another coat as i thinned it down a lot. All 10 TTAs now available as a train. Even better as most are reversible with either BP or Esso logos its nearly 2 trains for the price of one. No two are quite the same either, looking forward to seeing them trundling round soon.

Back to containers, i have 3 30 smooth sided Hornby ones having grey applied, this is the same dove grey as i used for the TTAs- Gibbo apologies i remember you asked me the colour, im sure its humbrol dove grey *Edit its humbrol gloss 40 i think *and its gloss but i forgot to note the number..

20200216_233051.jpg.3beca1ee8ce80d430fb505a130adf078.jpg

These 3 will become at least one Sainsburys Beef or Manchester Liners as homage to the original Hornby ones even though im not sure these styles were ever 30ft flat sided. Im working on producing transfers myself for the sides, scotch beef ones ready for a trial 20ft one which im sending to Gibbo tomorrow. Manchester liners is still pending matching the transfers to a red colour- humbrol 60 looking favourite. An OCL branded side is also in the works so watch this space.

20200216_161616.jpg.db6f609f79ecf5330bb893c22af954d3.jpg

The flat containers have had some sheeted loads prepared, the blue sheeted load is 2 old lowmac containers glued together under the sheet, the other loads are a fuel barrel off a large scale RC russian T34 and the other is fan drive out of a Hornby 50. The sheets are made from Tunnocks Caramel wafer wrappers which have been pressed round the loads whit side up and then painted, i think they represent tarps pretty well and are a nice treat with a cup of tea!20200216_232858.jpg.8199c648d81a3b4707b885ba22d10e18.jpg

Next up will be finishing off a couple more blue striped containers and a 10fter and 30fter made from a cut and shut of 2 Hornby 20ft boxes. After that i need some more flat sided 30fters to chop down to 20ft-Perters Spares will be source of them.

20200216_232947.jpg.16e7a614c8c06c0707d728e7ac1703d1.jpg

The flats are ready for transfers and a start will be made imminently, still awaiting wheels but these will be sent for soon i am told.

Nearly there!

Thanks for looking in

James

The last couple of days has seen me sorting out the shade of red for Manchester Liners transfers iv been working up. Between me and @Gibbo675 i think we have nailed it to Humbrol 60 to paint the doors, the fun part was matching it to the printed doc via photoshop to publisher and then works colour copier! Today saw a break through and i think its time to sort a test print onto decal paper once it arrives.

Pics showing the final test for size and colours on normal computer paper roughly cut out and dampened with water to stick to the container, i know the doors are wrong and we doubt a 30ft ML container existed but i can live with it.

20200218_201816.jpg.73d571b562e18fd7d7665b6d5523eacb.jpg20200218_201833.jpg.e667d00c786a28e4a5cfb8828236a50d.jpg

20200218_201850.jpg.795bac6a47706dabaa9809ab0e528f60.jpg

Tomorrows job will be finishing off the OCL drawings and making stretch to a 40ft one as well.

Im going to do at least one 30ft ML container as a nod to the traditional Hornby one, i know its wrong but i like it and the Scotch Beef ones too. Ill be ordering some more boxes soon to chop down to 20ft as per Gibbos latest update over on his thread.

Im starting to get a bit containered out, so i think ill have to change projects once i have done the current crop and soon to be purchased. If get many more ill have to do another 2 freightliner flat rakes!

Cheers for looking

Guessing the originating station was Leeds, but unusual that it doesn't have Wakefield Westgate on there; might've been York in that case?

Never thought of that, ill ask my Dad next time im up there, hell probably remember the train he got it from and the loco, hes got one of them brains!
