jessy1692
So a little bit less progress than i thought and nearly 2 months between posts i can add a bit of progress! Iv been stuck doing non modelling things for a few weeks, decorating and working over time which has depleted modelling time somewhat, so heres an update of whats been going on: 40 136 has had some work done, mainly a bit more paint scuffing and adding some excellent shawplan etches i acquired on my visit to Doncaster show, which seems like a year ago already! Pics below show them just after fitting an needing a couple more coats of black. Work has started on the bogies which were stripped down and cleaned before a coat of mucky brown was applied as the base of the intended weathering. I bought some shawplan tread plates and side inspection covers to stick on the bachman buffers as im out of cast replacements so im sure theyll come up alright. the treadplates are glued on with super glue and the side wings bent down with a knife once its gone off, not very scientific but it works fine, also aquired are a new set of steps as a couple were missing from the 40 when bought, these will be added (hopefully) over the 4 day weekend. Im still undecided on what to do with the other side of the loco, think it will have another identity giving me 2 for the price of 1. Also iv had a play about with one of them Lima remotoring kits i got off ebay, very simple to install and improves the running of this old 47 however the noise from the cogs is still pretty loud compared to modern stuff, still pretty pleased with it though. its still currently blue tacked in but it will be hot glue gunned in place soon. Pics show how to install as per the supplied instructions, very quick and very simple to make an improvement to old model. The narrow gauge gas works locos have had a coat of gloss varnish on for a while and im sick of them looking so shiny so i did a bit of investigation and had crack at producing my on transfers. I produced the wording at work on word and did a few test prints and once i was happy with the sizes ran a copy off on some clear waterslide decal paper. I was very impressed that the printing was so clear however the colour of the locos is just too dark so yellow lettering didnt show up as well as i had hoped it might. Iv just ordered some white backed paper and will attempt to get a colour match between the locos and the background of the words so hopefully the lettering will show up as the vibrant yellow as intended, watch this space! At somepoint since my last post i have also bought another Bachmann deltic and Heljan baby deltic off ebay for less than £100 combined which im very very pleased with, ill be over to York this weekend one day so ill be stocking up on shawplan etches for another deltic detailing job, think this one will have to be green and full yellow ends when i get around to it. As mentioned above iv had a few trips out to exhibitions, met Clive Mortimer at Doncaster doing his EMU building, was great to have a chat and pass on a few ideas, i came away with his plans for converting a 47 into a 48 so thats another project to be going at. This time of year is great as its time again for diesel galas and running days, we bobbed down to the Ecclesbourne Valley last weekend as D832 was still on holiday from the East Lancs, had a great afternoon just sat trundling about Derbyshire behind it, heres me having a look at the running gear whilst it ran round at Duffield and a couple more up at Wirksworth Next up is the class 40 event at the East Lancs in a couple of weeks, cannot wait for that to come around. Cheers for looking, ill try do something over Easter i promise..... James PS For those of you who read Traction magazine, keep an eye out for something from here in the modelling section of the next issue, out 6th April... jessy1692
Oh dear another couple of months have gone, with nothing to show for really apart from a house move and sorting all that stuff out and some very good weather which has kept me out of the indoor modelling mood. One thing i have done though is sorted the transfers for the gas works locos, these were printed on white backed decal paper and i had great fun trying to match the colours but managed it pretty well in the end. They arnt the best but im very happy with them as it finishes off these two little locos nicely, just need glazing and to sort out some couplings at somepoint. Just waiting now for RT Models to release the Barber kit and ill have the full complement of Harrogate Gas Works little engines. Thats about it for now but ill try get started on finishing the 40 soon and not be distracted by the football! jessy1692
Well that was a busy summer... so now the nights are drawing in again im going back to the old workbench. The scruffy 40 is awaiting transfers now which have arrived but from railtec, looking forward to trying them out. Another job was to fix the pair of 04s i made a while back, one chassic had gone so it was 'de motored'. The chassis are wired together so the remaining motor works fine with 12 wheel pick up. Cheers for looking in, should be more updates soon, theres a deltic in bits and a silver fox kestrel in bits too so lots to be doing! jessy1692
So heres a little update, the class forty now has an identity or 2, 40 136 on the dirty side, just as it was in my dads pic from springs branch in 1976. The other sidr is D337 as per i pic i found on the net, looking a lot cleaner. The blue stripe under the number is to denote modified traction motors. All that is left to do is give it a coat of satin varnish and then put the headcode boxes back and the glazing. Next up should be Kestrel, in blue, howecer after a trip to Doncaster today i picked up 37 431 in a bit of state for on 32 quid. Non runner when i git home but a couple of mins with the screwdrivers soon got the body off and the dcc chip taken out, blanking plate in and off it went! I made a start on sanding back the super glue marks fron the nameplates and also sanded back the red line from the intercity livery in preparation for a respray. Now 37 4's are a bit off my usual modelling sphere so any hints on which 37 4's in large logo best fit the Bachmann body id be glad to hear any thoughts. jessy1692
Finished off the 40 over the weekend and had a very good afternoon out in Sunday at the East Lancs for the DMU weekend, the 105 they have is an amazing piece of restoration. Heres the 40 all done, interesting to see the latest issue of model rail detailing up D325 as well! Currently writing a list for bits from Shawplan to get at the wakefield show in a couple of weeks. jessy1692
Finally got some decent modelling time again,so have a bit of an update. I picked up a couple of Turbots at the Wakefield show before xmas so have made a start, simple enough to build up, could do with metal wheels which ill add one day. The 37/4 plan has now changed, i picked up a very cheap part used 37/9 etch set so it will soon be 37 905, new exhaust port drilled & filed out and filler chucked into the bodyside steps and old exhaust ports.Plan is for petroleum sector decoration and potentially a sound chip money dependant... Something a bit different for me, hopefully will carry on with decent progress in the coming weeks Cheers James Edited January 13, 2019 by jessy1692
jessy1692
Right then, back to railways, iv spent the last few weeks building and finishing off a few cold war jets that have been lying around in various states of completeness for a while. 37 905 is now in primer and ready to paint once the weather picks up again, i made some head board clips for the noses from some scrap bits of an airfix kit, seem to have come out ok (one nose end dud only have one clip, honest!) Lamp brackets folded up from scrap brass. The chassis is being stripped down ready for a fettle and a clean, new Hornby class 50 buffers acquired to replace the smashed oruginals. Ill need to get some new bogie steps sorted too. The turbots are now wheeled and painted, the grey i used was very old and a bit lumpy so have weathered them down, ill get some transfers sorted before finishing off hopefully ill find some at York in a few weeks. jessy1692
So another night and some more wagons, i have just acquired 6 Hornby tta's in various liveries from ebay. Picked up the 1st 3 today and set about demolishing them. Being a bit tight i thought id have a bash at detailing a few of these up and at about £2.50 a wagon its worth a go, first i took them apart for a clean up and to glue the barrels together. I then decided to have a go at getting rid of the pretty thick base of the tank of the worst of the 3 to see if its worth doing on the others. A lot of filing ensued taking the tank base right off and up to the bottom to the rivet detail strip under the barrel. A new plate was cut and glued to the chassis and the fettled barrel glued to that. Ill give it a spray over tomorrow weather depending to see how it looks, initial impression to says its worth the effort to do the others but lets see how it looks. Eventually ill be getting some new etched walkways for them. Hopefully theyl come up ok, the chassis are a bit dated now but i think these old models will scrub up ok. jessy1692
A bit has been done and all the TTA's are now here and in various states of sanding and filling ready for the roof walks ill hopefully get at York. 37 905 has had a coat of rail grey, however with the weather turning colder and windy no spraying has been done for over a week, hopefully the weather will turn for the better before the Easter weekend when im planning to crack on with painting. The chassis has been rebuilt with new Hornby class 50 buffers and shawplan inspection plates and tread plates added. Also i have got an old silver fox kestrel going blue as well, just not sure how to do the yellow ends.. Oh and im still finishing off a Canberra which has been cluttering things up for a looong while, theres so many tiny transfers, its sent me cross eyed tonight! jessy1692
Had a good trip to York exhibition last weekend and picked up some useful bits for the ongoing projects, 37 905 now has just about everything to get it finished so will crack on this weekend painting. I got a couple of A1 models TTA walkways as well so tonight i made them up and fixed them to 4 of the tanks, well worth while and im pretty pleased with the mods on these cheap n chearful wagons. Looking forward to getting some paint on these soon and ordering some transfers. Cheers James
John Tomlinson
Kestrel in Railblue is an interesting one. (I too have a Silver Fox moulding which got sidelined after the wonderful Heljan one appeared). Strictly speaking, with Railblue the yellow end needs to be full front, so perhaps from a vertical line at the rear of the cab windows, up to the rainstrip. However, I suspect this will look DIRE!! Just a suggestion, and this borrows from the first seven of the 73/1's as built, namely small yellow panel below the windows, but going to a vertical line at their rear, light grey cab window surrounds and also lower bodyside strip (per 73/1's) and maybe a grey roof. Just a thought. John. P.S. Meant to say that PR9 looks very tasty indeed, you can't have too many Canberras! Amazing when you think they were designed by a handful of guys just after WW2, who rented some spare rooms over a garage in Preston as their office. jessy1692
Thanks John, yeah i do like the early cold war jets, like you say amazing to think how these things came about just after WW2. The kit was a pig to build nothing was straight, the transfers though are so detailed, seems it must have been old tools with new transfers. Its a Revell kit which are normally very good, but them i think i aquired it quite a while ago! As for Kestrel i was thinking like you with a small ish panel, deffo wouldnt suit a lot of yellow... ill come up with something one day! jessy1692
No realy progress on the tanks this week although i have ordered another set of A1 roof walks for the last couple of tanks. Had a great day out at Howarth yesterday for the diesel gala, managed to see everything after a bit of exploration. And as another distraction, i have aquired a remote control u boat from the local auction house for the princely sum of 43 quid. Spent today checking it over and finding my spare radio chrystals, all seems well and just done a bath test after the little one finished, all round success! Tomorrow ill re attach all the bits that have come off and may even do a proper trial in the boating pond weather depending Edited May 6, 2019 by jessy1692

jessy1692
Spent the afternoon doing a few bits and pieces, the sub is on hold whilst the split stand hardens off after being glued back together so i have put a coat of humbrol 40 onto 3 of the TTA's, very thin coat on 1st so it doesnt look great. 37 905 is edging closer, did the flint grey stripe and put a coat of yellow on the fronts and a coat of black round the cabs, another coat of black will see tht done n i can do the executive grey roof. Yellow ends will need a good few more thin coats yet. Also finally got a decent depth of colour onto my folland gnat, as you may have spotted in the TTA pic. The flame red orange paint has taken a lot of coats on top of the silver base. Thats about it for now, should get sone time this week to do some more, will probably need a distraction with the impending playoffs coming up for Leeds... KDG
Lovely aircraft Gnats. Have to unbolt and remove the rear fuselage and tailplane to change the engine. Unlike the Harrier, where you havd to remove the wing to change the engine.
jessy1692
So after a busy couple of weeks iv managed to get back to the workbench, 3 of the TTAs have now had 4 coats of grey, one will be sprayed black and the final 2 now have new roof walks. I had a go at the Esso ones with the single end ladders for these two so the last coulple of days has had me fitting the handrails n fiddling with ladders. They arnt perfect as i think the roof walks arnt quite correct for these but theyll do for me, also gives a nice bit of variety. 37 905 is creeping along through the paint shop so all being well will be ready for transfers soon. jessy1692
Finally got back up to my Dads tonight and edged things on a bit, the TTAs are just about painted and some have had a bit of weathering applied, basically just a heavy black wash to tone things down and make a start on the oil stains. Transfers will be ordered this week once applied the final weathing will be done, looking forward to getting these finished. Also took a comparison shot next to an 'original' tanker to see how they look against the detailed ones. 37 905 has had a bit of a dull down in preparation for final transfers and varnish, just waiting for the paint to go off and ill remove most of the brown dry brushing to better represent rust patches, all being well it will be somewhere near done this week. I have just aquired a few old freightliner flats over the last couple of weeks and have a few more coming, looks like the next big project will be on the go soon. Im blaming Gibbo as it was his thread and his caboose he made got me thinking about these! Anyway hopefully ill get something finished soon.. jessy1692
Bit of a transfer session tonight, 37 905 just about ready for a coat of satin varnish before adding etched arrows and plates. Always love adding transfers to a model especially a long build, really brings it to life. Having said that im glad my usual blue period models dont have orange cantrail strips, they are a pain! Transfers for the TTA's are on order so will be cracking on these next, then ill tackle my blue Kestrel yellow ends, still cant decide how to do them.. and then itl be freight liners...
