Jessy1692's bits & pieces- Coaching stock and wagon bashing stuff with the odd loco

Hello James,

How did you bend the chequerplate so cleanly?

Each time I try, it seems to wrinkle along the chequer 'lumps' if you see what I'm trying to say.

Rgds,

Yeah i know what you mean, the way i did it was to score the back of the plate where it needs bending and then scored the front as well, then clamped the plate to my steel rule checker face up with the edge if the rule along the score line and slowyly bent it to 90 degrees against the side if the workbench. If it went a bit wobbly i just tidied up with pliers as i went. The first side i did is a bit more rounded as i didnt score the front but the secind side was much easier with scoring the front, id just say take your time with the bend and keep checking as you go.

Hope this helps, i can take some pics of how i do it if that would help?

James

Evening Andy & everyone else, not much to report on the 04, been a bit busy with the little fellow on his last week off for Easter.

Had a trip to the NRM on Friday and was surprised to see 3 Deltics in and around the museum pity they all wernt inside but hey ho. Was a good afternoon out, its been a while since i last went and i do have to admit that im no fan of FS but it does look rather good in BR green.

Progress on the 04 is minimal, last night and this afternoon were spent sorting little lads homework project on 'safari' so used it as an excuse to make some trees from sea moss and have a bit of a practice for when i one day will get some sorted for the layout, anyway heres a few hours work, just need to make some animals now.....

I was up at my dads for a couple of hours today so just for Andy i took a few pics of how i bent up the chequer plate using a bit of scrap left over. My phone cam had real trouble focussing on it so apologies if the pics arnt too good.

Please excuse the red fingers and thumbs, id just been priming an old corgi land rover! So for bending the plate its:

Score the back heavily where you want the bend, at each end of the score on the edges, just slightly press in so it forms a bulge on the other side you can score a line on the front where it will match the score on the back.

Next line it up on a steel rule or something similar and clamp, i have varius sizes of office paper clips which have a very strong spring and clamp really well.

Line up the back side score and then slowly press against the workbench or something similar, keep going a bit at a time until it gets to 90' or somewhere near. take off the clamp and then tidy up is needed with pliers etc, and it should be fine! I did this a bit quick this aft so the bend is a little off but you get the idea, when i did the 04 i took my time and kept checking as i bent it to keep it square and firmly clamped.

Finally on the 04 i started to think about sorting the under the running plat bits and had a go at thinning down the original steps id lopped off. The earlier 04 steps are much thinner and more fragile looking than the later built 03 style steps so out came the files & knives.

post-5804-0-67242000-1460319983_thumb.jpg

Think this plan might be a good one, just need to find something to act as the air tank behind the front steps first.

Cheers for looking, back to work & normaltity this week so hopefully get this 04 done and in primer before too long. Then onto the next one of the pair.....

Evening all, got a bit more done on the 04 tonight before bobbing out to see an MPV, 66 186 on a short ballast and Volker Rail tamper come through Harrogate in the space of half an hour!

Anyway, latest updates:

post-5804-0-31072700-1460674349_thumb.jpg

Air tank made up from recycled plastic rod and plasticard with a bit of thick wire for air pipes behind the steps, i think it should be a bit bigger but to get it to sit behind behind the over scale depth of the steps i had to compromise.

post-5804-0-14260600-1460674355_thumb.jpg

Cab steps thinned down dramatically to look more like early 04's, just dont have the mesh to go behind yet..

post-5804-0-22528700-1460674368_thumb.jpg

Fuel filler? bracket and cap made up from scrap brass fret and old sprue and also a representation of some kind of bracket thing next to it made up from plasticard.

post-5804-0-12862900-1460674361_thumb.jpg

I also added what i think is an air pipe running in front of the sand poxes and through the steps, although you cant really see it from normal angles i know its there!

Still a few bits to do, like the other side under frame steps pipes etc but that should be easy now i know what im doing (famous last word) Buffer tread plates need to be added and re fitting the front lamps and also to add in the uprights on the foot plate at the front steps and then i think its about ready for primer, hopefully this weekend if the weather holds.

Ill source some mesh for the jack shaft guard at a later date next time i get to and exhibition or if i find some online.

Cheers for looking

Evening all, bit of an update after a pretty stagnant couple of weeks on the modelling front. One 04 is pretty much ready for numbering and the other is well on the way too, just needs a few more coats of green and lick of black & red here and there.

post-5804-0-68511200-1462918502_thumb.jpg

Holes have been drilled in both cab ends ready for multiple working pipes which i think ill use some fishing line to represent, ill glue them into one cab and leave them long enough to push into the other one so i wont need to glue them so i can split them apart as no doubt the axles will slip at some point...

post-5804-0-75978200-1462918510_thumb.jpg

Only thing im missing for these two now is the mesh for the guard behind the cab steps, ill have to keep an eye out and get some sorted.

Also i have resurrected my Bachmann deltic project that has been sat about idle for a while whilst i waited to spray it blue, iv masked off the ends tonight and started prepping for the yellow.

post-5804-0-21523200-1462918483_thumb.jpg

I have rebuilt the chassis, added shawplan steps & towing brackets and made a speedo drive up. Also splashed some paint about and fitted the shawplan buffer beam ready for pipes etc.

One thing i like to do with deltics is to open up space at the top of the tanks to give it a bit of depth and to me once the body is on they look like they are hanging from the body rather than the body sat on top.

It will eventually by Nimbus one side & the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry on the other, simply because i have a Nimbus plate spare and only one set of 9006 plates & crest on the model when i bought it, it was in a really bad state.

Thats all for now, hopefully get some more work done this week.

Cheers

Evening all, update time, the 04s are just about finished now, just need another coat of varnish but the weather has turned so they are still waiting for the time being.

The Deltic is coming on slowly and iv just stripped down and started painting a Silver Fox Falcon i have had for years that needed ne hand rails so that is now on the go as well.

Never one to miss something interesting, i found a Heljan DP2 in a sorry state on ebay last week and it duly arrived today. What appears to have happened is that that it wouldnt go around the previous owners trainset so he has tried to higher the body up using washers under the body mounting lugs, fair enough decent idea, however i dont think that alone worked so the red bufferbeam has been attached and some of the lower body side has been cut away to let the bogies swing!

post-5804-0-77403800-1464732322_thumb.jpg

Apart from the obvious body damage DP2 is in good nick and im hoping it will be a pretty simple fix, iv already got on in two tone green and i dont particularly like the all over green so i think ill do it all over blue just to be different.

post-5804-0-12646800-1464732312_thumb.jpg

Progress so far is the holes have been filled with plasticard to pack out the holes, which in turn will be profiled and then filler will be added to get a hopefully seamless tumblehome, thats the plan anyway.....

So, it was you that was bidding for that.

It was indeed, paid a bit over what i was expecting but the thought of a blue DP2 was too much to hold back on.

Ran better out of the box last night than my Dads new one from Hattons did at Xmas, was it yours?

I agree, but i dont mind picking these things up and with a fettling come up with something new, wouldnt buy a new DP2 even at Hattons bargain price to respray blue, but then the idea didnt cross my mind until i saw this one on ebay..

Ill be keeping an eye on his ebay account incase anything else turns up as 'modified'

The DP2 was obviously a great buy for you James, but it beggars belief that the previous owner could have been such a muppet to treat it in that way!

John.

Cheers John, i dont understand it really, only scenario i can see is it was an xmas present or something like that and when it wouldnt traverse rad1 curves it was duly 'fixed' im sure someone wouldnt have spent 70 quid or more and then do this, but then theres nowt as queer as folk

Evening, had a couple of hours on various things tonight whilst not watching the dull England game.

DP2 had a bit of a fettle and a quick blow over with primer and then filler added, sanding will commence tomorrow

them...

Finally have enough coats of yellow on the Deltic now too so, final painting can commence and the last little bits can be added.

Falcon has had a second coat of blue as well, everythings coming on nicely now. Trip to DEMU on Saturday coming up so i best start making a list.

Well its been a while since I have done anything of note, been a busy couple of months of weddings and stag do's, so its nice to get back to doing something quiet and a bit cheaper.

The Deltic that has been on going for a long while is slowly creeping towards being finished, transfers & varnish applied over the last weekend and shawplan windows getting stuck on this week. I had one plate for 55 006 when I bought it so one side is complete, the other will be Nimbus circa 1969 before it was ETH fitted as I had a spare plate in the tin from a long lost Lima deltic and only 1 ETH mounting bracket! However the plate is a bit battered and bent so its clamped up at the moment to try straighten it up. Hopefully it will be usable. The chassis is all done, tanks opened up under the body and shawplan buffer beam assemblies fitted on both ends, new steps and speedo drive fitted and the whole lot lowered on the bogies which I think makes a big difference to the look of it

One thing I only just realised im missing is the headcode box surround so will have to get some ordered, im sure I had some knocking around.......

post-5804-0-20527600-1472730849.jpg

DP2 has had a coat of rail blue but the rattle can ran out so currently waiting for a trip to an exhibition or Frizinghall models to pick up another to get it finished.

Falcon is coming along now, yellow ends going on now so should be all painted pretty soon, the eventual plan will be to get a railroad 31 chassis to replace the noisy Lima one.

post-5804-0-82377000-1472730850.jpg

The pair of 04s will be getting their mesh guards behind the cab steps soon so these will be finally complete after a long while of sitting around doing nothing, I may have another bash at close coupling and fitting the air control pipes between the cabs as well.

That's about it for now, hopefully more updates to come shortly.

Cheers

James

Little but of an update on the multiple working fitted 04’s. I have finally got around to cutting and fitting the mesh behind the cab steps that I bought at DEMU, another coat of black paint is needed on these.

post-5804-0-38546300-1473159345.jpg

I am trying to recreate the 12 control pipes that run from cab to cab with fishing line; I have glued them in to one cab and will then feed them into the other cab through the holes and probably keep them in place with blue tack so I can separate them if needed.

post-5804-0-11208500-1473159345.jpg

Another thing I’m trying is to wire both chassis together to improve the running on these old style chassis and to try keep them in sync. I drilled a hole in the keeper plate and pushed wires up to each side of the split chassis, iv field the mazak block down to bright metal and taped the ends of the wires to it as it won’t solder, the wires are superglue so won’t move, ill repeat on the other chassis but might not glue the wires so I can separate if attention is needed.

Finally ill shorten the couplings so they are a bit closer together.

Bit of a blow tonight, got the 04's complete and all pipes pulled through, popped them on for a run and half way round 2263 locked up.

Looks like the wheels have slipped on the axles, i knew this can happen with the old split chassis but iv had them running before for hours and all seemed well, could it be the heat? Its a bit warm tonight.

Does anyone know if its possible to reset and lock the wheels back in place with glue or is this a terminal thing?

Any help greatly appreciated as id rather have them running as a pair than a dead one and a good one!

Cheers

Evening all, i managed to sort the errant 04 out for now by carefully resetting the slipped wheels and carefully gluing the wheels to the axels, so far so good and they run pretty well, fingers crossed this fix holds for a while.

55 006/9020 is now all but finished, pretty happy with the result of 2 for the price of one and sits well next to the other Deltics, just need to rig up a wire loop coupling on one end and also get some screw link couplings to finish it off.

Falcon is getting there now, just a little bit more blue is needed where the masking tape didnt seal and paint got behind, not too bad but a little annoying.

Falcon & DP2 are edging closer, just waiting for me to get round to doing the transfers now. DP2 will be 49 001 on one side i think and the other ill probably stick with DP2. Hopefully should get them sorted this weekend, Falxon & Dp2 currently have patches of gloss varnish hardening off ready for transfers and if im lucky top coat of satin varnish will go on this weekend too

Wow nearly a year has gone since iv done anything modelling wise except read mags & rmweb, cant believe its been that long....

Anyway, i seem to have got some enthusiasm back now so earlier this week i started thinking about what to do with a Bachmann 40 i picked up at Leeds exhibition last year for 40 quid, first thought was a straight repaint into blue until my dad floated the idea of trying to model it as 40 136 in green in a pretty bad state, so heres how it looks at the mo, just messing about with different paints & washes to see what i can do. Also attached is my dads pic from Newton Heath in 74, by 76 the paintwork had deteriorated much further.
